Amazon launched AI-generated Video Recaps for selected Prime Video series in November 2025. After viewers spotted basic chronology and plot errors in the official Fallout Season 1 recap, the feature disappeared from the service in December, shortly before Season 2 premiered. The removal was reported by multiple outlets; Amazon did not publish a detailed explanation or establish that the pause was permanent.
What Amazon’s Video Recaps did
Announced on November 19, 2025, Video Recaps were a beta feature for selected English-language Prime Original series in the United States. Rather than present a text synopsis, Amazon described an audiovisual, season-level recap assembled from AI-selected plot points, narration, dialogue clips, music and show imagery. It was intended to help viewers catch up before a new season. Amazon’s launch announcement described the format and initial limits.
The initial titles included Fallout, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, Upload, Bosch and The Rig; it was not a feature available across every Prime Video show. Engadget’s launch coverage listed the shows. At launch, reports described access through an Extras section on the web or a recap button on a show page, though those paths were specific to the launch-era interface and are not current availability instructions. Engadget reported those access options.
What went wrong in the Fallout recap
Viewers flagged errors in the recap soon after the beta launched. One clear example was its treatment of Cooper Howard’s prewar flashbacks: the recap referred to them as taking place in the 1950s, although the relevant scenes are set in 2077. It also inaccurately framed the Season 1 finale confrontation involving Cooper and Lucy. These are not minor wording preferences: chronology and the meaning of a central finale event are exactly the kind of information a season refresher must get right. GamesRadar documented the chronology error, while Thurrott covered the recap’s reported problems.

The errors became especially conspicuous because this was an official Prime Video feature, not an unofficial fan summary. A polished voiceover and edited footage can lend a mistaken account extra authority. For a recap meant to prepare viewers for the next season, getting a flashback’s era or a character’s actions wrong undermines the product’s basic purpose.
When the feature disappeared—and what Amazon said
A viewer publicly highlighted examples of the Fallout errors on November 24, 2025. Reports on December 11–12 said the recap, and more broadly the Video Recaps feature, had been pulled or had disappeared from Prime Video. Fallout Season 2 began airing on December 16, making the timing notable: the feature vanished shortly before viewers had a reason to seek a refresher. The sequence is documented in GamesRadar’s account of the errors, Engadget’s report on the removal and Amazon’s December 2025 programming announcement.

The launch announcement confirms that Video Recaps were a beta, but the cited removal reports describe a quiet disappearance rather than a detailed public postmortem. The available accounts do not establish Amazon’s precise reason for pulling the feature, what review process it used, or whether the Fallout errors directly caused the broader removal. Nor do they establish a permanent cancellation or a worldwide shutdown. As of the reporting covered here, whether Video Recaps have since returned, been redesigned or expanded is not established.
Video Recaps were not the same as X-Ray Recaps
Prime Video’s earlier X-Ray Recaps are a separate feature: they provide spoiler-controlled text summaries of plot points, cliffhangers, characters and other story details. Amazon introduced X-Ray Recaps in 2024 and said the newer Video Recaps built on that system. Amazon’s X-Ray Recaps announcement explains the earlier feature.

| Feature | Format | What the available sources establish |
|---|---|---|
| Video Recaps | Narrated audiovisual season summaries with music, dialogue and show imagery | Launched as a limited U.S. beta in November 2025; reported removed or paused in December 2025. |
| X-Ray Recaps | Text summaries of story details, with spoiler controls | Introduced in 2024; the reported Video Recaps removal does not establish that X-Ray Recaps were also removed. |
It is therefore too broad to say Amazon removed all AI-powered recaps. The reported incident concerns the newer audiovisual beta, not necessarily every recap function on Prime Video.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why an official recap needs more than fluent narration
A reliable recap must preserve chronology, character identities and relationships, cause and effect, and the distinction between flashbacks and present-day scenes. It also has to handle ambiguous plot points, attribute actions and dialogue correctly, respect spoiler boundaries and select footage that supports what the narration says. Video Recaps combined several steps—identifying scenes, summarizing them, selecting material, adding narration and assembling an edit—so an error in the story account could be reinforced by the images and confident presentation.

Automation can make recaps faster to produce, and narrated video may suit viewers who prefer audiovisual summaries. But those advantages do not remove the need for continuity and factual checks before a recap appears under a streaming service’s official branding. The Fallout episode does not prove every AI summary will fail; it shows the reputational risk when a plausible-sounding, official summary gets basic story facts wrong. The sources cited here do not establish the exact production workflow or whether human review occurred.
