X teased a smart-TV video app on April 23, 2024, and a beta appeared in some television app stores by September. The product, called X TV, is an interface for watching X content on a television—not a confirmed cable replacement or a Netflix-style library. Its current availability and support across devices remain unclear.
From teaser to beta: the timeline
- April 23, 2024: X CEO Linda Yaccarino announced plans for a dedicated TV app, without giving a firm release date. TechCrunch’s report on the announcement described the intended video features.
- September 4, 2024: X said a beta was appearing in some app stores. TechCrunch reported seeing it on Amazon Fire TV and noted reports of availability on Google TV; it found no sign of the app on Apple TV or Roku at the time. The beta report was not evidence of a complete rollout.
- September 25, 2024: That is the update date shown on the Google Play listing for X TV, which identifies X Corp. as the developer and the app as
com.x.xtv. The listing also shows 100,000+ downloads. These are store-record details, not proof of current availability on every device or of ongoing development. See the X TV Google Play listing.
The available public record establishes that X TV existed and reached at least some app stores, but it does not establish a broad, global rollout or a recent active development program.
What X said the app would do
Yaccarino’s teaser presented X TV as a way to bring video and other X content to smart TVs. The announced features included a trending-video algorithm, AI-organized topics, improved video search, and the ability to start watching on a phone and continue on a television. Contemporary coverage relayed X’s claim that the app would reach “most smart TVs,” but no complete compatibility list accompanied that statement.
Those were announced capabilities, not a guarantee that every feature is present or working in the current app. The Google Play description broadly promises X content on televisions but does not document a detailed programming catalog.

Which TVs can run X TV?
Availability depends on the device, app store, and region. The evidence below describes what was reported around the beta launch, not a current guarantee for every model.
| Platform | What is established |
|---|---|
| Amazon Fire TV | TechCrunch reported seeing the beta there in September 2024. |
| Google TV / Android TV | Contemporary reports and the X TV Google Play listing support availability in this ecosystem; device and regional access may vary. |
| Apple TV | The newer X TV app was not confirmed in the September 2024 launch coverage. An older X/Twitter Apple TV listing does not establish support for the newer app. View the Apple TV listing. |
| Roku | The newer app was not confirmed there in the September 2024 launch coverage. |
| Other smart TVs | Yaccarino said “most smart TVs,” but X did not supply a complete platform-by-platform list. |
A TV running Google TV or Android TV may still lack the app because of regional availability, device certification, hardware generation, or store policy. Check the official store on the specific television or streaming device rather than relying on a general compatibility claim.

How to check for and install the app
- Open the official app store on your television or streaming device and search for X TV.
- Check that the developer is X Corp. On Google Play, the app’s package ID is
com.x.xtv. Similar app names do not establish that a listing is the X TV product. - If the listing is available for your device and region, install it and follow the on-screen authorization instructions. Google Play reviews indicate that users have encountered QR-code or device-code sign-in, but the current interface may differ.
- If the app is missing, treat that as a sign that it may not be offered for your device or region. Avoid sideloading an unrelated app with a similar name.
As practical troubleshooting—not official X TV instructions—if sign-in fails, try restarting the TV device, updating or reinstalling the app, and checking that the phone or browser used for authorization is signed into the intended X account.
What X TV is—and what it is not
| X TV is | X TV is not established as |
|---|---|
| A television interface for watching X content and video. | A cable replacement or standalone live-TV subscription. |
| A way to bring X video to a larger screen, with discovery features described at announcement. | A Netflix-style catalog of licensed movies and scripted shows. |
| Part of X’s broader push to make the platform more video-focused. | A service with confirmed universal availability across smart-TV brands. |
Coverage framed the TV app as part of X’s effort to attract viewers and video creators, publishers, sports organizations, and advertisers. The Information’s coverage discussed that commercial context. It does not change what the app itself is: a TV route into X content, not evidence of a separate licensed-TV service.

Costs, sign-in, and practical limitations
Cost
The Google Play listing does not show a subscription price for X TV. X’s general app help page says the X app is free to download and install, but that does not establish that every video, creator feature, or future TV experience will be free. X Premium is a separate paid product; the available evidence does not establish it as a requirement for X TV. X’s app download guidance.
Login and reliability
Google Play reviewers have reported QR-code or device-code authentication problems, repeated sign-in prompts, and sessions that fail to persist; some also describe black screens, unresponsive controls, or recommendations they found irrelevant. These are user reports, not independently verified tests, and they do not show that every user encounters the same problems.

Updates and privacy disclosures
The Google Play record surfaced here shows an update date of September 25, 2024. That date signals that the visible store record is old; by itself, it does not prove that the app has been abandoned. The same listing says the app may share location and personal information with third parties and may collect several categories of data. Store disclosures and availability can change and may vary by region, so consult the listing available to you.

Choosing whether to try it
- It may suit you if you want to browse X video on a large screen and the app is listed for your device.
- Check carefully if you need broad device support, reliable account sessions, or an actively maintained television app; the public record does not confirm those qualities across platforms.
- Look elsewhere if you expect scheduled channels, a large licensed on-demand catalog, or a confirmed cable-replacement service. X has not established those as X TV offerings.
