On August 24, 2022, gaming creator CoryxKenshin published a video titled “YouTube: Racism and Favoritism” after YouTube age-restricted his gameplay video of The Mortuary Assistant. Cory argued that the decision appeared inconsistent with the treatment of a comparable video by Markiplier, and questioned whether racial bias or favoritism toward prominent creators played a role. The reported reversal of the restriction raises a real question about platform accountability—but it does not, by itself, prove discriminatory intent.
What happened to CoryxKenshin’s video?
CoryxKenshin, the channel name of Black gaming creator Cory DeVante Williams, posted a playthrough of the horror game The Mortuary Assistant. YouTube age-restricted it. Cory said his initial appeal was rejected, and he then pointed YouTube to a Markiplier video he considered comparable.
According to Cory’s account, YouTube removed the restriction from his video after he supplied that comparison. He also said YouTube reviewed the issue more broadly and applied restrictions to The Mortuary Assistant videos. That broader action is part of Cory’s account as reported by Internet Policy Review; it is not an independently audited record of every enforcement decision involving the game.

What did Cory allege?
Possible racial bias
Cory questioned whether his video had been treated differently because he is Black while a similar video by a white creator was initially left unrestricted. His claim was an allegation about the possibility of unequal review, not proof that YouTube or a particular reviewer acted with racist intent.
Favoritism toward prominent creators
He also questioned whether YouTube responds more favorably to larger or more prominent creators. In Cory’s account, the Markiplier comparison became important because it helped prompt a reconsideration of his own restriction. That sequence can reasonably fuel concerns about unequal access to attention or effective appeals, but one comparison does not establish that YouTube systematically favors a particular creator or class of creators.
Cory’s original video and contemporary coverage, including Tech Times’ report, document the public accusation and dispute. The available sources do not establish a formal YouTube admission of racism or favoritism.

Why an age restriction matters
An age restriction is not the same thing as removing a video or issuing a Community Guidelines strike. Under YouTube’s current age-restriction guidance, restricted videos generally require viewers to be signed in and at least 18. They may also be unavailable in some parts of YouTube and may receive limited or no advertising.
Those limits explain why creators may see an age restriction as more than a label. It can narrow the potential audience and affect a video’s earning opportunities. YouTube’s gaming and monetization guidance says age-restricted gaming videos may have limited or no ads, in part because some advertisers prefer broadly suitable content. The sources establish these possible consequences, not a specific amount of lost reach or revenue for Cory’s video.

YouTube maintains separate guidance for enforcement and appeals, and for appealing ad-suitability decisions. A report that a video was age-restricted should not automatically be rewritten as “removed,” “struck,” or “demonetized”: those terms describe different outcomes.

Why the game’s content was relevant
The Mortuary Assistant is a horror game involving death-related material, disturbing imagery, and frightening scenes. Such content can raise questions under YouTube’s rules on age appropriateness and advertiser suitability. YouTube’s advertiser-friendly guidelines discuss factors such as violence, shocking imagery, and context; its gaming guidance also addresses monetization of gameplay.
That makes an age restriction plausible as a content decision, but it does not settle whether Cory’s video was treated consistently. Two videos featuring the same game are not necessarily identical for review: footage, edits, thumbnails, titles, descriptions, and context may differ. Cory considered the Markiplier video a relevant comparison; the available sources do not establish that the uploads were identical in all those respects.

What YouTube says about review
YouTube’s current monetization review guidance says reviewers may consider the video itself and its metadata, including the title, thumbnail, description, and tags, as well as context, focus, tone, realism, and graphicness. YouTube also acknowledges that automated systems can make mistakes and describes a process for requesting human review of certain monetization decisions.
This guidance helps explain how apparently similar uploads might receive different outcomes: reviewers or systems may assess context and presentation differently. It does not reveal which process applied to Cory’s specific age restriction or explain the original decision. The current help pages describe today’s framework, not necessarily the rules or workflow in place in August 2022. YouTube’s policy-update history records changes over time, so present-day guidance cannot be used as conclusive evidence of what a reviewer should have decided then.

What is supported

What remains unproven
- That racial bias caused the original restriction.
- That YouTube systematically favors white creators or larger channels.
- That a particular employee acted with discriminatory intent.
- That Cory was shadowbanned or that the video’s reach changed by a measurable amount.
A reversal after a creator supplies a comparison supports a concern about inconsistent or confusing enforcement. It does not identify motive. Likewise, a single comparator can prompt scrutiny but cannot establish a platform-wide pattern. The accountability concern is still meaningful: when decision criteria and case-specific explanations are difficult to see, creators may struggle to distinguish policy judgment, error, and unequal treatment.
What creators can do when a restriction seems inconsistent
Creators facing a similar action can first identify exactly what YouTube says it restricted. These steps are general guidance; the available sources do not establish that Cory followed every one of them.

- Keep records. Save the notice, screenshots, timestamps, original upload details, and correspondence so the decision and any later change can be tracked.
- Do not treat deletion and re-upload as an ad-suitability appeal. YouTube says deleting and re-uploading will not resolve an ad-suitability restriction; use the appeal process where available.
