The Story of Nukkad is a retrospective web series about the making and ideas of Doordarshan’s Nukkad, not a reboot or sequel. Filmmaker Kireet Khurana directed it, with original co-creator and co-director Saeed Akhtar Mirza supplying its central voice. It first streamed on HumaraMovie’s YouTube channel from July 18, 2020; current availability is not established by the available reporting.

What was the original Nukkad?

Broadcast on Doordarshan in 1986 and 1987, Nukkad was an ensemble drama set around a Mumbai street corner. Its residents came from different religions, occupations and circumstances, and the stories grew out of everyday work, hardship, conflict and mutual support rather than wealthy households or aspirational glamour. Contemporary retrospectives describe it as a distinctive and influential Doordarshan series, not as a formally proven first of its kind.

The ensemble included Guru, played by Dilip Dhawan; Khopdi, played by Sameer Khakhar; Maria, played by Rama Vij; Kaderbhai, played by Avtar Gill; and Hari, played by Pawan Malhotra. Tea sellers, barbers, shopkeepers, tobacconists and other neighbours shared the setting, making coexistence part of the drama rather than a background idea. Scroll’s account of the series and a Hindustan Times retrospective provide further historical context.

What does The Story of Nukkad cover?

The web series looks back at the original programme through Mirza’s memories and reflections: how the makers thought about Nukkad, how its characters were conceived, and what its social outlook meant to those who made it. It is best understood as a compact, documentary-style retrospective, not a scripted continuation, a full cast reunion or necessarily a conventional making-of film built around extensive archival footage.

Launch coverage described a 17-short-episode structure, with four chapters initially planned for release each week. The early instalments were reported to include an overview of Nukkad, a focus on Khopdi, and an episode about Ganpat, described as a “good cop.” That reporting does not provide a complete verified episode guide or confirm that all 17 episodes were ultimately released, so individual episode titles, runtimes and availability should not be inferred. The launch feature discusses the announced format and early subjects.

Who made the retrospective?

Kireet Khurana directed the web series. Mirza, who co-created and co-directed the original Nukkad, is its principal on-screen participant and narrator. HumaraMovie was associated with producing and releasing the project; IMDb also lists Climb Media among the production details. Khurana had previously made The Leftist Sufi (2016), a documentary about Mirza’s filmmaking and writing career. The two were neighbours in Mumbai’s Bandra area, a connection that helped prompt the project. IMDb’s title entry lists the release date and production information.

How did lockdown shape its format?

Khurana said the series was filmed in his Mumbai apartment in April 2020, during the COVID-19 lockdown. The restrictions made a self-contained production practical, but the focus on Mirza’s voice was also an editorial choice: rather than attempting a large reunion or interviewing the full original cast, the series centres on one creator’s recollections. It therefore offers a personal route into the show’s history, not a comprehensive record of every contributor’s perspective.

Two absences noted in the launch coverage are Aziz Mirza, Saeed Mirza’s elder brother and an original co-creator, who was reportedly unwell and could not be interviewed, and Kundan Shah, a creative figure associated with Nukkad, who died in 2017. These details do not mean that every surviving cast member or contributor appears in the web series. Scroll’s feature reports the production circumstances and these absences.

Why revisit Nukkad?

The series’ central historical interest is the original show’s attention to working-class urban lives and a neighbourhood made up of people with different backgrounds. Rather than relying on conventional heroes, its characters were ordinary residents whose needs and relationships overlapped. That shared street gave the show a strong sense of place and made mutual dependence visible.

Khurana connected renewed interest in Nukkad with its ideas of inclusiveness, empathy and humanity toward marginalised people. That is a creator’s interpretation of the show’s continuing resonance, not a claim that every viewer will respond to it in the same way. For viewers who know the serial, Mirza’s recollections add a maker’s perspective; newcomers can approach it as a window into a particular strand of Indian television history.

Where did it stream, and can you watch it now?

The original release began on July 18, 2020, on the HumaraMovie YouTube channel, with weekly uploads announced. IMDb also gives July 18, 2020 as the Indian release date. This was an online YouTube release, not evidence of a subscription-platform launch. Scroll’s release announcement confirms the original platform and date.

The available reporting does not establish whether the channel or all episodes remain publicly accessible today, whether access varies by country, or whether the series has moved elsewhere. Check HumaraMovie’s official YouTube channel for current listings rather than treating the 2020 release announcement as confirmation of present availability.
