Google’s “Dear Sydney” Olympics ad drew criticism not simply because it showed artificial intelligence, but because it appeared to have Gemini write a child’s heartfelt fan letter for her. The commercial set that choice against the Olympics, a spectacle built around human effort and achievement. Its intended message was that AI could help people pursue their dreams; its images suggested that a machine could supply the personal expression that made the story matter.
What happens in Google’s “Dear Sydney” ad?
Published on July 25, 2024, the roughly one-minute commercial follows a father describing his young daughter’s interest in running and her admiration for Olympic hurdler Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone. The father uses Gemini to get information about hurdle technique, then asks it to help write a letter telling McLaughlin-Levrone how inspiring she is. Gemini produces a polished draft that includes the girl’s ambition to one day break the athlete’s record. The spot ends by inviting viewers to pursue their dreams “with a little help from Gemini.” Google’s official upload shows the sequence.
The two demonstrations are not equivalent. Looking up information about hurdles is a practical research use; asking a chatbot to compose the child’s personal message touches authorship and emotional expression. Coverage of the backlash noted that the letter-writing scene, more than the sports-information help, became the focus of objections. (The National; Inc.)
Why did the letter-writing premise feel wrong?
A fan letter is not valuable only because it communicates information. Its awkward phrasing, specific observations, and unmistakably personal voice are part of what make it meaningful. The daughter’s admiration is the emotional center of the setup, but the commercial shows her father prompting Gemini to generate the words meant to express it. It does not show her writing a first draft, choosing what to keep, or reshaping the output into her own message.

That leaves the model looking less like an editor and more like the author. The distinction matters:
- Assistance could mean helping the child find facts about McLaughlin-Levrone, think of questions to answer, organize her own ideas, translate a message, or improve clarity while preserving her words.
- Substitution means generating the personal message before the child’s own thoughts or voice appear in the process.
The ad did not establish that the child had authored the message Gemini was asked to help with. It therefore invited viewers to read the tool as replacing the expressive act rather than supporting it.
Why the father became part of the problem
The father is introduced as a caring parent helping his daughter connect with a role model. That setup creates an expectation of shared attention: he might ask what she admires about McLaughlin-Levrone, help her find accurate details about the athlete, or encourage her to write what she wants to say. Instead, he turns to Gemini for the central act of writing.

As a result, the parent-child interaction the story seems to promise largely disappears. The father can come across less as a guide helping his daughter express herself and more as a product demonstrator. A small change in the scene could have preserved the emotional premise: show the girl writing first, then have them use Gemini together to check a fact or consider a clearer way to phrase one of her own thoughts.
Why did the Olympics setting make the mismatch sharper?
The Games are associated with practice, persistence, mastery, and people achieving difficult things through sustained effort. In the ad, the girl’s athletic ambition belongs to that world of training. But her communication with the athlete she admires is treated as a task the technology can complete almost instantly.
That contrast can suggest an unintended message: work hard at the visible achievement, but outsource the words that give it personal meaning. This is an interpretation of the creative choice, not a claim about what every viewer thought. Advertising commentators made a similar point about the tension between Olympic ideals of human effort and a commercial that appeared to diminish creative effort. (The Drum)

Was the backlash about AI itself?
Mostly, it was about the use case and how the ad framed it. The spot could have shown Gemini helping with sports research, brainstorming, translation, or a grammar check without making the tool appear to originate a child’s feelings. The problem was that it selected a moment where the human process is part of the point.
There are also cases where writing assistance can remove real barriers. A child with dyslexia might use speech-to-text or get help organizing a draft; someone writing in a second language might ask for a translation; a user might want grammar suggestions while keeping their own ideas and phrasing. Those uses can expand a person’s ability to communicate. They differ from a depiction in which the model supplies the emotional content before the person’s own words are shown.
That does not mean every AI-generated draft is unethical, or that a draft must be a final message. Some viewers could reasonably see Gemini as a harmless starting point. The criticism is narrower: the commercial did not make the child’s authorship visible, so its intended distinction between help and replacement was difficult to see.

Google’s defense—and why it did not settle the issue
Google said it wanted to tell an authentic Team USA story and show Gemini supporting human creativity, not replacing it. The company described Gemini’s output as a starting point, thought starter, or early draft. That explanation is relevant, but viewers encounter the finished commercial, not the intention behind it. In the scene as presented, the father asks Gemini to help write the letter and the model supplies polished language; the ad does not show the daughter revising or making that language her own. The stated intention and the visible action were misaligned. (The Drum)
The spot also did not show safeguards that would clarify the tool’s supporting role: preserving the child’s draft, prompting her to personalize the output, or having the parent guide the process. In an intimate moment where authenticity matters, the absence of those cues left the substitution reading intact.
Did the ad objectively perform badly?
“Bad” is best understood here as a judgment about cultural reception and creative fit, not proof that every audience or performance measure rejected the commercial. Fortune reported that ad-tracking company System1 gave it a score of 4.4 out of 5.9 and viewed it as supporting diversity and inclusion through its young girl, women in sport, and aspirational role model. That reported assessment sits alongside substantial public criticism. (Fortune)

A standardized ad score and a public argument about whether a brand should insert AI into a child’s personal expression measure different things. The available reporting does not establish that the ad failed commercially across the board. It does show that a commercial can test favorably on some dimensions while still raising a serious question about the values its story communicates.
What did Google do after the criticism?
On August 2, 2024, Google said it would phase “Dear Sydney” out of its Olympics television rotation. That was a withdrawal from the TV rotation, not an erasure: Fortune reported that the video remained on YouTube. Contemporaneous coverage also reported that comments were disabled on the official upload; that fact alone does not establish why they were disabled. (Fortune; The Drum)
How could the commercial have made its point better?
The core idea—using a tool to help someone pursue an ambition—did not require Gemini to write the letter. The ad could have kept the same daughter, athlete, and Olympic context while showing AI in a role that made the human contribution clearer:

- Have the daughter write what she wants to say before Gemini appears.
- Use Gemini to find or verify facts about McLaughlin-Levrone, rather than to invent the girl’s feelings.
- Ask the model to suggest questions that help the child develop her own message.
- Show the father and daughter reviewing suggestions together and choosing what, if anything, to use.
- Limit the assistance to translation, spelling, or clarity while keeping the child’s ideas and voice intact.
For AI advertising, the practical creative test is whether the tool adds useful information or access while keeping the person’s intention and authorship visible. “Dear Sydney” could have shown that distinction, but instead made Gemini’s generation the most concrete action in its emotional story.
