The “Footloose Challenge” usually means the 2022 TikTok Footloose Drop: one person supports a partner horizontally, then lowers or rolls them toward the floor on the chorus of Kenny Loggins’s “Footloose.” It is a partner-lifting stunt, not a standard dance step.
Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick made the trend especially recognizable with their June 2022 attempt. Bacon played Ren McCormack in the 1984 film, but he joked that this move was not part of the movie’s choreography. Because the maneuver can cause a head, neck, back or face-first impact, inexperienced viewers should not casually copy the lift.
What is the Footloose Challenge?
Two people approach or face each other. One supports the other across the front of the body, commonly holding an arm and a leg while the lifted person is horizontal. On the chorus, the supporting partner lowers, rolls or “unfurls” the other toward the floor, stopping or catching them just above it. Videos vary, so there is no official grip or standardized routine.
Coverage calls it both the “Footloose challenge” and the “Footloose Drop.” The defining feature is the timed, partner-supported lowering motion—not simply dancing to the song.

How the Footloose Drop appears in videos
- Approach: The pair moves into position before the chorus.
- Support: One person takes the other’s weight in a horizontal position.
- Cue: The lowering begins on the recognizable chorus, often at “Tonight, I gotta cut loose.”
- Lowering: The supported person rotates or rolls downward in a controlled-looking motion.
- Recovery: The partners finish standing or near the floor, depending on the video.
This is a visual description for identifying the trend, not a beginner lifting tutorial. Camera angles can hide how much strength, balance and coordination the maneuver requires.
What song does it use?
The usual audio is Kenny Loggins’s “Footloose,” the title song associated with the 1984 film. TikTok music availability can differ by country, account type, licensing status and time. A video using the song is not automatically the challenge: solo dances, lip-syncs and film clips use the same recording.

Is it the dance from the original Footloose movie?
No. The TikTok move is a later internet trend inspired by the film’s title and song, not a recreation of the movie’s famous choreography. Kevin Bacon explicitly joked that the partner drop was absent from the original choreography. A clip from the 1984 film, a line dance set to “Footloose” or Bacon’s solo performance should not be labeled the Footloose Drop.

Why did Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick make it famous?
The pair posted an attempt in June 2022, after the move was already being described as viral on TikTok. Bacon’s connection to Footloose made the clip an immediate nostalgia moment, while his joke about the move not being in the original choreography highlighted the distinction between the film and the trend. Their participation did not establish them as the creators or an official version.

Who started the challenge?
Published contemporary reports did not verify a definitive first creator or launch date. The safest account is that the sequence was circulating on TikTok by June 2022, then received a major boost from the Bacon-Sedgwick video. Pepsi later partnered with Chlöe Bailey on a new “Footloose” version and encouraged TikTok participation in October 2022, evidence that the format had become commercially visible.
Do not credit Kevin Bacon, a particular TikTok account or an exact view total as the origin without a dated first-party post or platform analytics.

Why did the format appeal to users?
- The chorus is instantly recognizable and supplies a clear timing cue.
- The lowering creates a dramatic before-and-after visual payoff.
- Couples, friends, siblings and celebrity pairs can perform it together.
- The awkward contrast between movie nostalgia and a risky-looking maneuver creates comedy.
- Bacon’s participation added a direct connection to the original film.
These are practical explanations for its shareability, not measured findings about every participant.

There is no basis for calling the move safe for general audiences. It requires lifting another person, controlling their weight near the floor and coordinating a grip and musical cue. A failed attempt can send the lowered person face-first into the ground; other possible injuries include impact to the head, neck, back, shoulders, hips, knees or wrists. Hard, slippery, crowded or obstructed floors increase the danger.

The safest advice is not to attempt the lift unless both people are trained and physically capable and the action is supervised in a properly prepared dance or stunt setting. Do not practice it casually at home, especially on a hard floor or with children.
Common failure points
- The lifter loses grip or balance.
- The lifted partner rotates unexpectedly.
- The timing is early or late.
- The lowered person cannot protect their head or neck.
- A staged camera angle makes a professional maneuver look easy.
Safer ways to join in
You can keep the song, timing and nostalgia without lifting anyone:
- Use a standing hand or arm gesture on the chorus.
- Perform a side-by-side, floor-based version with both people remaining supported.
- Use a jump cut, split screen or camera transition to simulate the drop.
- Recreate a recognizable Footloose-inspired dance scene without a partner lift.
- For a production that genuinely needs the maneuver, hire trained dancers or a stunt coordinator.
What to do after a fall
Stop immediately. Do not move someone who may have a neck, back or serious head injury unless there is immediate danger. Get emergency medical help for loss of consciousness, confusion, severe pain, neck or back pain, weakness, numbness, breathing difficulty, vomiting, seizure or inability to stand.
