Spotify’s plus button makes it easier to save a track and add it to playlists from one control. The old heart, though, made one thing especially clear: this song is in Liked Songs. Which matters more to you—simpler playlist organization or a distinct, one-tap way to like music?
Vote: Keep the plus sign, bring back the heart, use both, or no preference. The key difference is that Spotify’s saved state can mean more than “liked”: depending on the screen and item, a checkmark may indicate that something is saved in Your Library or a playlist.
What changed when Spotify replaced the heart?
On February 27, 2023, Spotify announced a Plus (+) button to bring saving and adding to playlists into one control. The former heart was a direct way to like or save a song; adding it to a playlist used a separate control or menu. In the newer flow, tapping + saves the item to an applicable collection, and tapping the resulting saved state can offer playlist destinations. Spotify described the change as a way to streamline saving and make it easier to add items to multiple playlists. Spotify’s announcement attributes time-saving benefits to its own research; it does not publish the sample size, methodology, or comparative task times needed to assess those findings independently.

Spotify did not remove Liked Songs. The change was to the control and to what its saved indicator could communicate. In March 2023, Spotify Community guidance described the former green heart being replaced by a green check, with the check representing a broader saved-in-Your-Library status. Spotify Community’s explanation is useful context, but the exact display and behavior can vary by platform and app surface.

How the plus and saved state work
From Now Playing
- Open the currently playing song or episode.
- Tap the + control beside the title, if it is shown.
- The item is saved to the applicable collection, such as Liked Songs for a song or Your Episodes for an episode.
- After the icon changes to a green check or other saved state, tap it again to access further save or playlist options, where available.
Spotify’s Now Playing help page describes saving to Liked Songs or Your Episodes and adding a saved item to another playlist. Labels and steps may not look identical on every device.
From an album, playlist, or Your Library
On other screens, a save control may indicate that an item is in Your Library or already in a playlist. Spotify’s Your Library guidance uses “Add or Save” for songs, albums, and playlists; artists and some other entities may instead offer Follow. Saving an album does not automatically save every song on it, and saving a song does not automatically save its album or artist.

That distinction matters when removing or organizing items: a checkmark should not be treated as proof that a song is in Liked Songs. To confirm where a particular track is saved—or remove it from a specific destination—check the item’s current menu or the relevant collection in your version of the app. The precise control can depend on the device, screen, item type, and current interface.

- One entry point for saving and organizing. A user can move from finding a track to placing it in a workout, mood, genre, or collaborative playlist without relying on two separate controls.
- It fits playlist-heavy listening. Someone who sorts music into several destinations may find the plus-and-follow-up flow more useful than a heart that only marks a favorite.
- It works across more kinds of content. A heart naturally suggests liking a song; a plus is more neutral for saving albums, podcast episodes, playlists, or audiobooks where supported.
- It avoids duplicating controls. Spotify’s approach treats liking and playlist placement as related ways of saving or organizing, rather than separate actions with separate buttons.
The case for bringing back the heart
- “Like” is clearer than “add.” A heart is an immediately familiar signal of preference. A plus can suggest adding to a playlist, queue, or collection, rather than expressing that a song is a favorite.
- The simplest action used to be one tap. If all you want is to put a track in Liked Songs, a multi-purpose save flow can feel less direct than pressing a dedicated heart.
- The old indicator answered a narrower question. A green heart generally meant that a song was in Liked Songs. A green check or saved state can cover a broader set of library or playlist relationships, so it may be less informative for people who use Liked Songs as a personal catalogue.
- It keeps preference separate from filing. You might save a song to a “listen later” playlist without having decided whether you like it. A distinct heart makes that difference easier to preserve.
- It carries emotional meaning. Music discovery often involves liking, loving, or favoriting a track. A plus is practical, but it can make the interaction feel more like organization than appreciation.
Some Spotify Community users have requested a faster, one-click way to mark tracks for Liked Songs, and discussions on Spotify Community and Reddit include calls for a separate heart indicator. Should Spotify use both?
A two-control design could preserve the meanings users may want to distinguish: a heart for adding or removing a song from Liked Songs, and a plus for playlist and other save destinations. Spotify could also make “liked,” “saved to Library,” and “in a playlist” visibly distinct states. That is a product-design recommendation, not an announced Spotify plan.
Spotify Community’s explanation of the transition says existing saved content was not supposed to be removed. Still, old tutorials may show the pre-2023 heart interface, and current labels can differ across mobile, desktop, and web. Spotify’s support pages currently describe controls with terms such as “Add or Save,” “Saved,” and “Follow,” depending on the surface and content type: Your Library and Now Playing.

- Keep the plus sign: it is more useful for saving and organizing.
- Bring back the heart: liking should remain a clear, one-tap action.
- Use both: heart for Liked Songs, plus for playlists and other saves.
- No preference: the underlying function matters more than the icon.
