JioHotstar has not confirmed that native picture-in-picture is “arriving soon.” As of August 18, 2026, the official app listings and announcements reviewed did not give a PiP launch date or announce a rollout. Some viewers report inconsistent PiP behavior, particularly across Android and Apple devices, but those reports are not confirmation of an upcoming feature.
This article covers JioHotstar in India, the current name of the app many viewers still search for as Disney+ Hotstar. Disney+ in other markets is a separate product experience, so its device support or features do not establish what JioHotstar offers in India.
What picture-in-picture means
Native picture-in-picture (PiP) keeps a video in a small floating window while you use other apps. It is different from a mini-player that stays inside the streaming app, split-screen mode, or a SharePlay viewing arrangement within a FaceTime session.

Android and Apple devices provide operating-system frameworks for PiP, but a streaming app must also support and enable the feature. Android’s documentation describes the app-level requirements and device limitations; Apple’s documentation explains how compatible video apps can use PiP on iOS and iPadOS.

What JioHotstar has officially confirmed
In India, the current app is listed as JioHotstar, with Jiostar India Private Limited identified as its developer. The App Store listing requires iOS 15 or later and names features including Tadka, Sparks, smarter search, ratings, reminders, and interactive cricket features. The Google Play listing also presents JioHotstar as the app’s current identity.
Those listings, as reviewed on August 18, 2026, did not announce native PiP or provide a rollout date. No official Jiostar announcement confirming that PiP is forthcoming was identified in the sources reviewed. That means “coming soon” should be treated as unverified—not as a confirmed feature or scheduled launch.

Does JioHotstar PiP work on Android?
Some users say PiP has worked on particular Android phones or app versions; others report that it was unreliable, stopped working, or depended on an app-level permission. These accounts are anecdotal and do not establish consistent support across Android devices or JioHotstar content.
Android 8.0 introduced PiP support for small-screen devices, but that operating-system capability does not make every video app PiP-compatible. A permission labelled “Picture-in-picture” in Android settings is not proof that the current JioHotstar build will open a floating player.
Check whether it works on your device
- Update JioHotstar from Google Play and start a video.
- Switch the player to full screen, then use the Home button or Home gesture.
- If the app and video support PiP and the permission is allowed, playback should shrink into a floating window.
- If it does not, open Android Settings and look for JioHotstar’s Picture-in-picture permission. The location and wording vary by Android version and phone maker.
- Force-stop and reopen the app. If the problem persists, clear its cache and sign out and back in.
- Reinstall only as a last resort: offline downloads may need to be downloaded again.
Android’s PiP guidance also notes that the feature can be unavailable on devices that lack the relevant system support or have low memory.

What about iPhone and iPad?
iOS and iPadOS provide PiP for compatible video apps. Apple says a supported player can offer a PiP control and can also start PiP automatically when a full-screen video is playing and the viewer leaves the app. JioHotstar’s availability on iPhone and iPad does not, by itself, confirm that its player supports PiP.

Try the standard iPhone or iPad checks
- Update iOS or iPadOS and the JioHotstar app.
- Go to Settings → General → Picture in Picture and enable automatic PiP if that setting is available.
- Start a video, switch to full-screen, and use the PiP button if the player displays one. Otherwise, swipe up to the Home Screen.
- For a first test, use an on-demand film or episode rather than a live sports stream.
If the video closes instead of floating, the setting cannot force PiP in an app or playback mode that does not support it. Disney+’s general device list includes iPhone, iPad, Android phones, and Android tablets, but device compatibility is not confirmation of PiP in JioHotstar India. Why live sports and other streams may behave differently
PiP behavior can vary by content type and player. A service might support it for an on-demand episode but not a live channel, or playback might be interrupted during an advertisement or a protected-content transition. The available user reports include problems involving live streams, but JioHotstar has not published a compatibility matrix establishing which stream types support PiP.
- Test an on-demand film or episode separately from a live sports broadcast.
- Note whether the issue happens during an advertisement, stream transition, or other specific moment.
- Do not assume that PiP on one title, device, or app build means it works across the catalogue.
Is PiP included only with a particular subscription?
No plan-specific PiP restriction has been confirmed in the sources reviewed. Jiostar announced monthly plans across subscription tiers beginning January 28, 2026, describing additional viewing-plan flexibility; its announcement did not identify PiP as a plan benefit.

SharePlay is not the same as native PiP
Disney+ documents a PiP-like viewing arrangement within Apple SharePlay, which lets people move between a FaceTime call and a shared stream. That is a social viewing feature, not proof that the regular Disney+ player—or JioHotstar’s Indian player—supports a standalone floating PiP window. JioTV’s PiP feature is also not evidence of support in JioHotstar: they are separate apps.

How to assess a claim that PiP is launching
A dated JioHotstar support article, an explicit App Store or Google Play release note, or a direct Jiostar statement would be stronger evidence of a planned launch than a user post. A reproducible report should identify the device, operating-system version, app version, region, and whether playback was live or on demand. A system permission, a single screenshot, PiP in another Jio app, or Disney+ features in another market cannot confirm a JioHotstar rollout.
