Luck and Strange is a reflective, guitar-led album that sounds less like a reinvention than a thoughtful late-career conversation with David Gilmour’s familiar musical language. Its strongest distinction is the way it folds family voices and a rediscovered Richard Wright performance into songs about aging and mortality. If you value atmosphere, melodic guitar and measured arrangements over constant stylistic surprises, it is worth listening to.
What kind of album is Luck and Strange?
Released by Sony Music on 6 September 2024, Luck and Strange was Gilmour’s first album of new material in nine years, according to his announcement. He made it with co-producer Charlie Andrew during five months of recording in Brighton and London. The record’s frame is reflective rather than nostalgic: lyricist Polly Samson described its perspective as “written from the point of view of being older; mortality is the constant.” That is the collaborators’ stated intention, and it gives the songs a lens without reducing them to a single theme. Musically, this is recognizably Gilmour: spacious arrangements, patient pacing and guitar used as a voice within the song. The difference is not a wholesale break from his past but a willingness to let other textures and collaborators interrupt the expected shape. Gilmour said Andrew challenged habits in the sessions, asking, “Well, why does there have to be a guitar solo there?” and “Do they all fade out? Can’t some of them just end?” Those comments describe the producer’s approach, not a guarantee that every track overturns convention. In listening, the album’s freshness is most apparent when its vocal performances and unusual sources of material share the foreground with Gilmour’s guitar.
How do the songs and performances work?
The standard edition moves through nine tracks: “Black Cat,” “Luck and Strange,” “The Piper’s Call,” “A Single Spark,” “Vita Brevis,” “Between Two Points,” “Dark and Velvet Nights,” “Sings,” and “Scattered.” The sequence alternates vocal songs with instrumental space, giving the record room to breathe instead of making every moment compete for attention. The instrumentals foreground Gilmour’s guitar; the vocal tracks bring the album’s reflective mood into sharper focus. The pacing is part of the appeal, though listeners seeking a succession of sharply contrasting songs may find its measured atmosphere too consistent. The official album page.

“Luck and Strange”
The title track has a particularly tangible connection to the past: it incorporates keyboard playing by the late Richard Wright, recorded during a 2007 barn jam at Gilmour’s home. Wright did not record specifically for this album. The older performance instead becomes part of a new arrangement, making the track a meeting between a documented moment from Gilmour’s history and the present-day record.
“Between Two Points”
This is a reworking of a 1999 song by the Montgolfier Brothers, with Romany Gilmour singing and playing harp. Her contribution changes the album’s center of gravity: the track is not simply another vehicle for her father’s guitar, but a family performance with its own vocal identity. It is one of the clearest examples of the record making space for voices beyond Gilmour’s. Sony identifies the original song and the performance credits in its release notice.

“The Piper’s Call” and the guitar-led pieces
Gilmour’s guitar remains a defining presence, especially in the instrumental passages, but the album does not make every song culminate in a solo. Le Monde critic Franck Colombani singled out two instrumentals for their guitar solos and suggested “The Piper’s Call” could have appeared on Pink Floyd’s The Division Bell. Those are one critic’s comparisons, not an objective measure of the album’s identity. They capture a real point of entry for listeners who want Gilmour’s familiar sound, while the record’s other contributions make it more than a simple return to an earlier band era. It is both, but the balance leans toward continuity. The guitar phrasing and open, spacious arrangements belong to a musical language Gilmour has developed over decades. What makes Luck and Strange feel like a present-tense solo statement is the conversation around that language: Andrew’s reported push against automatic choices, Samson’s age-conscious lyrics, Romany’s featured performance and Wright’s archival keyboard part. Rather than disguising its lineage, the album uses that history as material.

That coherence has a trade-off. The songs sit within a sustained mood, so the album works best as a complete, unhurried listen. Its variety comes through in who is heard and how the pieces are shaped more than in abrupt changes of style. If you want Gilmour’s signature guitar sound with a few meaningful shifts in arrangement and perspective, that balance is rewarding. If you want a radical departure from his established sound, the record is unlikely to provide one.
Which edition should you choose?
The release includes CD, LP and Blu-ray formats, as well as deluxe options; bonus material differs by edition, so check the track list and contents for the specific format rather than assuming every version is identical. The deluxe LP box is the most substantial documented physical package, but its extras are not necessary to appreciate the album itself. Who is this album for?
- Listen if: you enjoy spacious, guitar-centered songs, patient arrangements and a reflective late-career mood.
- Listen for: the title track’s Richard Wright keyboard contribution, Romany Gilmour’s vocal and harp on “Between Two Points,” and the contrast between vocal pieces and instrumental passages.
- Expect less of: a radical stylistic reset or a uniformly high-energy sequence; the album’s appeal is its coherence and measured pace.
Critical opinion should be kept in proportion. Colombani praised the album’s coherence and overall quality but considered it premature to call it Gilmour’s best solo album, preferring the 1978 debut. That is one review’s judgment, not an aggregate verdict or evidence of a critical consensus.
