If your iPhone could show Apple Maps horizontally but Apple Music stayed stubbornly portrait, you were not missing a setting. On an iPhone running iOS 16, Apple Music did not provide a general landscape interface. That meant no reliable landscape browsing for Library, Playlists, Albums, Artists or Search, and no guarantee that Now Playing or lyrics would rotate.
The complaint was especially understandable for people with horizontal dashboard mounts and no CarPlay. Later reports suggest iOS 27 beta may rotate the audio-player screen, but that is a limited, beta-era change—not proof that the entire Music app now works like iPad or CarPlay.
What “landscape mode” was missing?
On iPhone, landscape support can mean several different things. A complete implementation would let you browse your library, playlists, albums, artists and search results sideways; rotate Now Playing, the queue and lyrics; and use a layout designed for a wide screen. iOS 16’s native Music app did not offer that general-purpose experience.

Those are separate interfaces. They do not make the iPhone’s own iOS 16 Music app landscape.

The short answer for iOS 16
- iOS 16 did not add a documented, app-wide landscape mode to Apple Music on iPhone.
- Turning off Portrait Orientation Lock cannot add an orientation that the app does not implement.
- The evidence shows missing functionality, not an Apple statement explaining whether the omission was intentional or why it remained.
Apple Community users raised the issue in 2022 and 2023. A 2023 post specifically described using Apple Maps in landscape while Apple Music remained portrait in a car without CarPlay; the response directed the user to Apple’s feedback channel rather than offering a switch or promised release (Apple Community, 2023).
Why the omission mattered
A horizontally mounted phone can make maps easier to read, yet switching to a portrait-only music screen forces an awkward change in orientation. The practical reasons users wanted landscape included:

- dashboard mounts positioned horizontally in cars without CarPlay;
- more room for album artwork, long track titles and playback controls;
- better viewing space for lyrics;
- holding a large iPhone sideways for comfort or accessibility.
Landscape support might reduce orientation switching, but it does not make touching a mounted phone while driving safe. CarPlay or voice controls are preferable when the vehicle supports them.

Check whether rotation itself is working
- Open Control Center and make sure Portrait Orientation Lock is disabled.
- Rotate the iPhone in a known rotation-capable app such as Safari or Maps.
- Reopen Apple Music and rotate the phone.
If Safari or Maps rotate but Music remains portrait, the phone’s sensors and system rotation are working. The limitation is the Music app’s supported interface, not a hidden iOS 16 toggle.

What later iOS versions appear to change
Reports from iOS 27 beta indicate that Apple is testing landscape support for the Apple Music audio-player screen, with album artwork alongside playback controls. Apple’s iOS and iPadOS 27 beta release notes do not clearly document this feature, so the reports should be treated as beta observations rather than a confirmed stable-release specification.
The available descriptions do not establish landscape browsing throughout Library, Search or playlists, nor do they confirm that lyrics and every queue action rotate correctly. Beta behavior can change, and layouts may differ by iPhone model. A rotating Now Playing screen is not the same as a fully landscape Apple Music app.

Practical alternatives
Use CarPlay when your vehicle supports it
CarPlay moves music and navigation interaction to the vehicle’s purpose-built display. It does not rotate the iPhone’s own Music app, but it avoids trying to operate a portrait-only phone interface in a car. See Apple’s CarPlay overview for compatibility information.

Try a third-party Apple Music client
Apps such as Marvis Pro provide an alternative interface for Apple Music and iTunes libraries, including customizable presentations and landscape-oriented layouts on supported screens. The U.S. App Store listing showed $9.99 when checked; prices vary by storefront, tax and later developer changes.

It is not a complete replacement for every native Music function. Check whether the current version meets your needs for downloaded tracks, lyrics, queue handling, background playback, ratings and library editing. The listing notes that iOS restrictions limit some deletion actions.
Change music services only as a last resort
A different streaming app may offer the landscape layout you want, but changing ecosystems can mean migrating playlists, losing Apple Music metadata or editorial features, paying another subscription, and changing how downloads, lyrics, recommendations and family sharing work.
Stay with Apple Music in portrait
If preserving the native library, downloads and controls matters more than orientation, portrait mode remains the most predictable iOS 16 option. A mount can be repositioned, but that changes the physical setup rather than adding software support.

- Does the whole interface rotate, or only Now Playing?
- Does it work with your Apple Music subscription and downloaded music?
- Are playlists, metadata, ratings, lyrics and queue behavior preserved?
- Will Bluetooth, USB audio, lock-screen controls and background playback still work?
- Is the cost one-time or recurring, and what permissions does the app require?
- Can you use it without manually handling the phone while driving?
Verdict
The iOS 16 complaint was justified: Apple Music on iPhone lacked the general landscape interface that many horizontally mounted, non-CarPlay users reasonably expected. Disabling Portrait Orientation Lock could not fix an app-level omission. iOS 27 beta reports suggest Apple may finally be addressing the audio-player screen, but until a stable release and broader behavior are confirmed, that should be described as a partial, still-evolving improvement—not the full landscape Apple Music experience users originally requested.
