Yes, but availability is not confirmed for everyone. A report published on December 2, 2025, described inline YouTube playback for some iPhone users: tap a YouTube preview in X and the video plays within X instead of immediately opening YouTube. X has not clearly documented the feature in its public video help, and the report said Android users were still redirected to YouTube at the time. Treat it as a reported, potentially limited rollout—not a guaranteed feature across devices.
What changed: YouTube links can play inside X
With the usual link handoff, tapping a YouTube URL in an X post opens the YouTube app or a browser. The reported change is that a post can show a playable YouTube preview: tap it and playback takes place in X, so you can return to the post or continue scrolling without switching apps. The December 2, 2025 report described familiar playback controls and a small YouTube indicator; it also noted that parts of the underlying YouTube player could appear during interaction. PiunikaWeb’s report is the evidence for this behavior, not an official X announcement.
This is not the same as a creator uploading a video to X. The video remains a YouTube-linked video rendered in an in-app viewing experience; X’s public video documentation covers X-hosted videos and related controls but does not clearly document inline playback for external YouTube links.

Which devices and accounts can use it?

No evidence establishes that X Premium is required. Nor is there an official X procedure for enabling the feature or a confirmed setting that forces it on.

How to try inline playback
- Update X from the App Store.
- Open a post containing a direct YouTube link.
- Look for a generated video thumbnail or YouTube playback indicator.
- Tap the thumbnail or play control. If the feature is available for your device and account, playback should remain inside X.
- Use the controls shown in the player, then use its back control to return to the post or timeline.
There is no verified switch to turn on inline YouTube playback. X’s separate autoplay setting is documented for video autoplay in X; changing it may affect X-hosted videos and does not guarantee YouTube links will autoplay. The documented path is Settings and privacy → Accessibility, display, and languages → Data usage → Video autoplay on iOS and Android, and More → Settings and privacy → Accessibility, display, and languages → Data usage → Autoplay on X.com. What the in-app player does—and what is unknown
The report supports basic playback with familiar controls, but it does not establish that the embedded experience includes all YouTube app features. It does not confirm whether comments, channel pages, subscriptions, Watch Later, playlists, history, captions, playback speed, quality selection, casting, transcripts, or YouTube Premium benefits work normally inside X. It also does not establish how ads, sign-in prompts, or age checks behave. For those features, opening the video in YouTube is the more predictable option.

The report said the feature displayed consent language indicating that enabling it allowed YouTube videos to play automatically in the X timeline and that interaction data could be collected under YouTube’s terms and privacy policy. That wording does not, by itself, establish exactly what data X or YouTube receives, whether playback events are shared, how embedded sign-in works, or how tracking protections affect the player. Read any prompt shown in your own app before enabling playback; the precise data flow is not explained in X’s public video documentation.

The report describes the general case of a YouTube link appearing as a playable preview. It does not verify support for every URL type or video restriction. Direct youtube.com/watch links are the clearest case to try; support for youtu.be short links, Shorts, playlists, live streams, or links passed through URL shorteners is unconfirmed. A private, members-only, age-restricted, region-blocked, or removed video may require access or fail to embed, even if X recognizes the link. Posts that combine a YouTube URL with another image or video may also behave differently.

Why a link may still open YouTube, and what to try
If tapping the link switches apps
The feature may not have reached your account, device, or app version; Android and web support were not established by the report. The URL format or video restrictions may also prevent inline playback. There is no confirmed setting that can override those cases.
If a preview appears but playback fails
- Update X, then force-close and reopen it.
- Check your connection; try Wi-Fi instead of cellular data.
- Temporarily check whether a data-saver restriction is preventing playback.
- Try another direct YouTube link.
- Open the same video in YouTube to see whether the video itself is private, restricted, or unavailable.
- If the player still fails, use YouTube directly. X’s general iOS troubleshooting advice also includes checking connectivity, restarting the device, and updating or reinstalling the app. X iOS app troubleshooting
If autoplay does not start playback
Check X’s documented autoplay setting at the platform-specific path above, but do not assume it controls YouTube-link playback. A manual tap may still be needed, and the reported feature is not guaranteed to autoplay on every account or device.

Inline playback, YouTube, and picture-in-picture are different

If a creator uploads a clip directly to X, it uses X’s native video player instead. X documents native-video autoplay and video docking on its iOS and Android apps; those capabilities should not be confused with playing an external YouTube link inside X. X video documentation
