Reports say Amaya joined Hargitay and Hermann through adoption in 2011. Hargitay has described becoming a parent to a second child as an experience that expanded, rather than divided, the love she already felt for her first child.

Andrew’s unexpected arrival
According to ABC News’ account of a 2012 interview, the opportunity to adopt Andrew came unexpectedly after Amaya had joined the family. Hargitay said their lawyer called “out of nowhere” about a baby, and that she and Hermann immediately felt certain about the decision. Recalling the moment, she said, “I knew it was just right.”
In the same reflection, Hargitay described having three children as “pretty dreamy,” saying Andrew seemed to have “fallen out of the sky.” Those comments describe the couple’s feelings at the time; they are not a claim about the children’s current circumstances.

What the parents have said about the children
A 2018 answer about acting
During an Entertainment Tonight interview on March 21, 2018, Hargitay and Hermann were asked whether their children would follow them into acting. Hargitay said the children were “super funny,” but answered that they were not acting at that time. The interview reported August as 11 and Amaya and Andrew as 6 on that date. Those were time-specific ages and should not be treated as current.

The public comments from Hargitay and Hermann focus on affection, adoption and family milestones rather than detailed profiles of each child. That makes it possible to describe how the family was formed without speculating about personalities, education, ambitions or private relationships.

When has the family appeared in public?
2023 Stuttering Association for the Young benefit
ABC News published photographs of Hargitay, Hermann and all three children together at the Stuttering Association for the Young benefit gala in 2023. The appearance confirms a public family outing; it does not establish anything broader about their home life.
2025 Cannes appearance
Good Morning America/ABC News also reported a family appearance on a Cannes red carpet in 2025. As with the 2023 event, the photographs document attendance at a public occasion, not the children’s private activities or current plans.
