There is no single service with all Australian television. Start with the free app run by the program’s broadcaster—ABC iview, SBS On Demand, 7plus, 9Now or 10—then check paid services for originals, licensed titles and sport. Availability changes with rights, so confirm a title’s current listing before subscribing.
Which app should I check first?
A broadcaster is a useful first clue, not a guarantee: streaming rights can expire, move or cover only some seasons. Use this map to begin a search, then check the service’s current catalogue.

Australia’s prominence rules require TVs and connected devices manufactured and sold from 10 January 2026 to prominently display the five broadcaster apps. Older devices do not have to comply, and prominent display does not guarantee that every app works on every model. ACMA explains the device rules.

Broadcaster video on demand (BVOD) is the natural starting point for current Australian broadcast television. “Free” usually means no subscription fee; it does not necessarily mean no advertising, no account requirement or permanent access.

ABC iview
ABC iview is ABC’s free video-on-demand service, with live ABC streams and programming including news, current affairs, documentaries, drama, comedy and children’s television. Some programs can appear before their linear broadcast. Availability windows differ by title. ABC says iview is primarily for Australia; only rights-cleared selections may be available internationally. See what iview is and where it is available.
SBS On Demand
SBS On Demand is free and ad-supported. Its service includes SBS channels and live streams, international drama, films, documentaries, food and travel programs, news, sport and NITV content. The live site separates sections such as TV Shows, Movies, Sport, News, NITV and Live. Episodes and films can have expiry dates; check the title page rather than assuming the full run is available.
7plus
7plus offers Seven catch-up, on-demand programs and online live streams, including Seven’s main channels and multichannels. Its range includes reality, drama, news, classics and special events. Seven describes these viewing options in its 7plus viewing guide. Advertising, registration, regional availability and event rights can affect what you can watch.
9Now
9Now is Nine’s live and catch-up service, with available feeds such as Nine, 9Gem, 9Go! and 9Life. Look here for Nine news, current affairs, drama, reality and sport. A live event may not have a replay, and a catch-up episode may not be available in every location. Some viewing can require an account or location verification.
10
10 is Network 10’s current streaming destination for live and catch-up programming, including reality, cooking, drama, news and entertainment. Some Paramount-linked titles may be on the free service and others on Paramount+; do not assume all Network 10 programming is in either catalogue. Check the current title listing and branding in the service.

What paid services add
Subscription video on demand (SVOD) services fill particular gaps; none is a complete archive of Australian television. This comparison describes their general role, not a guarantee that a specific title is currently included.

Other niche services—including BritBox, Acorn TV, Hayu and Tubi—can suit particular genres, but do not replace the broadcaster apps. ACMA lists Apple TV, Binge, Disney+, HBO Max, Netflix, Paramount+, Prime Video and Stan as regulated SVOD services with at least one million Australian subscribers for the 2026 reporting year. Their first annual compliance reports are due 15 February 2027; this is a regulatory threshold, not a ranking of catalogue size. See ACMA’s SVOD information.
Choose a setup for your viewing habits
Lowest-cost legal setup
- Install ABC iview, SBS On Demand, 7plus, 9Now and 10 on a compatible device.
- Search those apps before paying for a service; add a legitimate free service such as Tubi only if its catalogue suits you.
- If a paid show is the reason to subscribe, choose one service at a time and note the renewal date.
- Cancel after checking the service’s billing-cycle end date, then rotate to another service if needed.
- Pay annually only if you expect to use that service for most of the year and the annual terms suit you.
Families and children
Compare kids’ profiles and parental controls, simultaneous streams, downloads, device support and advertising in children’s programming. Netflix and Disney+ publish plan and feature details on their Australian pages; do not assume that an ad-free plan removes ads from live, linear or sports programming. Disney says some such programming may still contain advertising.
Australian drama and comedy
Check Stan for Australian originals, ABC iview and SBS On Demand for broadcaster programming and commissions, and Binge for selected premium and Foxtel-related titles. Netflix, Prime Video and Paramount+ may have Australian originals, co-productions or licensed programs. The right starting point depends on whether you mean current broadcast shows, originals, classics or a particular series.
News and current affairs
Check ABC iview, SBS On Demand, 7plus, 9Now and 10, as well as the broadcasters’ own pages. Live feeds, regional editions and replay windows are not necessarily the same across services.

Sport
Look up the particular competition and season, rather than choosing a universal “best” sports app. Check whether the event is free on a broadcaster, included with Kayo, available through Stan Sport or ESPN on Disney+, or requires a separate package. Confirm whether the listing offers live coverage, replay, highlights or a delayed feed; rights can change between seasons.

Use the free apps as your base and subscribe only when a specific title or season is available on a paid service. Before joining, check whether the title is included in the subscription or is a separate rental, purchase or add-on.
How to find a specific show—and what to do if it is missing
Search the likely broadcaster first, then verify the exact season and viewing format. A live stream, catch-up episode, full on-demand season and rental listing are different offers.
- Search the broadcaster’s app and official website, using alternate spellings or the season label if necessary.
- Open the title page or episode guide and check which episodes are playable, whether they are live or on demand, and any expiry date.
- Search likely paid services, checking whether the title is included, an add-on, or rent/buy only.
- If it is still unavailable, look for an official rights or expiry announcement, then check legitimate rental and purchase stores or library services.
- For a current program, check again after its next broadcast or episode release; a replay may be added later.
A title that appears in a web search may be an old listing, a press page, a page for another country or a title whose rights have expired. The current playable listing in the service takes precedence. Missing episodes can also reflect incomplete music, sport or archival rights, regional restrictions, limited catch-up windows, or a season split between services.
Avoid unofficial streams: they can expose viewers to malware, deceptive payment forms, privacy risks and copyright infringement, as well as unreliable playback. Use the broadcaster or a legitimate distributor instead.

Watching Australian TV from overseas
Check three separate questions: whether the app operates in your country, whether the particular program is licensed there, and whether the Australian broadcast edition is available. Rights differ by territory. ABC says iview is primarily restricted by Australian rights agreements, though a curated selection of rights-cleared programs may be available internationally. Other broadcaster apps can also limit access abroad.
Search for the program through official broadcasters and legitimate distributors in the country where you are watching. A VPN is not a dependable substitute for a local rights-holder: access may fail, and VPN use can conflict with a service’s terms.
Prices, plans and avoiding overpayment
The following Australian-dollar prices were displayed on the official services on 18 August 2026. Treat them as dated reference points, not permanent prices; the amount can vary with billing route, promotion, bundle or plan change.

Stan’s detailed plan information and billing caveats are on its billing help page; Apple-billed prices can differ from direct billing. Check Netflix Australia and Disney+ Australia for current plan terms. Disney notes that live, linear and sports programming may contain ads even on plans marketed as ad-free for movies and series. Prices for Binge, Prime Video, Paramount+ and Apple TV+ are not listed here; check their Australian signup pages before joining.

Compare the plan you will actually use: ad tier, screens, resolution, downloads and any sport add-on. A 4K tier is of little value unless the title, plan, device and connection support it. Before accepting a promotion, note its end date and the subsequent billing price; also check whether joining through an app store or bundle changes the terms.

Devices and common playback problems
If a service works on one television but not another, check the specific TV model and operating system, the Australian app store, firmware and app updates, account region, internet connection and any HDMI or DRM limitation. Some older hardware may no longer support an app. ACMA’s prominence rules cover qualifying newer Australian-market devices, not every television already in a home, and do not guarantee compatibility with older models.
An antenna can still be useful for terrestrial live television; streaming apps require internet access and do not guarantee that every live feed or event is available. If buying a device, confirm that the exact Australian model supports the apps you need rather than paying for features you will not use.
Live TV, catch-up and on-demand are not interchangeable
- Live stream: a feed as broadcast; it may be regional, delayed or restricted by rights.
- Catch-up: episodes available after broadcast for a limited window.
- On demand: a title playable when selected, for as long as its rights window lasts.
- Rent or buy: a one-off transaction, not access included in a streaming subscription.
- International availability: access depends on country and title-specific rights.
A service may have a live channel without the replay, a replay without the live event, or only selected episodes. Check the title’s current page before planning around a particular viewing option.

Australian television is spread across broadcaster apps, subscription services, sport packages and transactional stores. A show’s original broadcaster does not necessarily retain its streaming rights. Rights can be limited by territory, season, episode, music, event or time window; a title can also move to a licensed service. That is why a current title lookup is more reliable than a static list of shows.
ACMA’s 2024–25 viewing report identifies ABC iview as the leading free-to-air catch-up and streaming service, while describing different growth patterns for 7plus, 9Now, SBS On Demand and 10 play. That is context about viewing, not evidence that one service has the largest or best catalogue. Read the ACMA report.
