Twitch is not merely planning a TikTok clone. It tested its Discovery Feed in 2023, rolled the TikTok-like live feed out broadly in April 2024, and added a separate Clips Feed in its mobile app. The significant 2026 development is native vertical livestreaming: Dual Format Streaming lets streamers send horizontal and vertical versions of one broadcast at the same time.
Here is what Twitch’s Discovery Feed, Clips Feed, Stories and vertical live experience actually do, where viewers find them, and what the changes mean for creators.
What Twitch’s “TikTok-inspired feed” actually is
The comparison refers to a swipeable, full-screen mobile browsing pattern. Instead of choosing a category and opening a channel, viewers can move vertically through recommended previews and clips. Twitch’s recommendation policy describes two vertical feeds in its mobile apps: one focused on live content and another for clips. See Twitch’s recommendation policy.
That makes Twitch similar to TikTok in interaction design, not in purpose. Twitch’s feed remains centered on live channels, chat, categories, clips and communities. It is not a general-purpose short-video network with the same ranking system or business model as TikTok.

When Twitch launched it
- August 2023: Twitch began testing a Discovery Feed in its mobile apps.
- April 30, 2024: Twitch announced that the TikTok-like Discovery Feed was rolling out to all users. TechCrunch reported on the rollout.
- July 29, 2024: Twitch described a redesigned mobile experience with separate Discovery and Clips feeds, plus Stories. Twitch’s mobile-app announcement.
- February 27, 2025: Twitch said it was continuing work on feed loading, recommendations and signals such as chat. That was a roadmap statement, not a guarantee that every planned change had shipped. Read the CEO’s 2025 update.

Discovery Feed
The Discovery Feed primarily promotes live content through short previews. A viewer can move from a preview into the channel and its chat. It is an additional discovery surface, not a replacement for Twitch’s categories, tags, search or followed-channel lists.
Clips Feed
The Clips Feed is the short-form viewing surface. It is useful for quick entertainment and sampling a streamer, but a clip may omit the context that makes a full livestream understandable.
Stories
Stories give creators a way to post between broadcasts. Twitch has said clips were especially valuable in the Stories feed and has been adding more clip recaps and clips from favorite streamers.

Dual Format Streaming
Dual Format is the 2026 change that makes vertical live video native. A phone held vertically can show a full-screen vertical layout; a desktop viewer can continue to see the conventional horizontal presentation. Twitch says viewers can switch between vertical and split views and return to horizontal viewing when rotating a phone.
How viewers find and use the feeds
- Open the current Twitch mobile app and go to its home or content-feed area.
- Choose the live Discovery Feed to browse recommended streams, or switch to the Clips Feed for short videos.
- Swipe vertically through the recommendations.
- Tap a preview or clip to open the creator’s stream or channel.
Exact tab names and placement can differ by iOS or Android version, account, geography and interface rollout. Twitch’s July 2024 announcement identifies the feeds and Stories as parts of the redesigned mobile experience, but it does not promise one permanent menu path for every user.
Recommendations are personalized, but Twitch has not published a complete, permanent ranking formula. Feed behavior can vary with viewing history, followed channels, activity, region, app version and current experiments. Twitch says it is improving recommendation quality and adding signals such as chat; that does not mean any one signal guarantees distribution.

What changed for viewers in 2026
The strongest 2026 story is not the launch of a new feed; it is the widening of vertical live viewing around an existing feed system. Twitch says 70% of its new viewers are coming from mobile, a Twitch-provided figure in its Dual Format announcement rather than an independently verified audience study.

- Faster discovery: swipe through live previews without browsing every category.
- Less control: a personalized feed may be less efficient than search for a particular game, language or channel.
- Less context: a clip can be entertaining without explaining the full stream.
- Higher data use: autoplaying video can consume more mobile data than static browsing.
- Unexpected exposure: recommendation feeds can surface content you did not deliberately search for; use Twitch’s controls, filters and reporting tools when needed.
What Dual Format means for streamers
A single broadcast can now serve a horizontal desktop presentation and a vertical phone presentation. Twitch says vertical layouts drove more clicks into streams during its testing; that is Twitch’s own performance claim, not a guaranteed result for every channel. Dual Format is rolling out to all streamers, while the separately announced 2K/1440p option is for Partners and Affiliates.

Potential advantages
- More chances to appear in mobile recommendations to people who do not already follow the channel.
- A live show designed for a phone can be easier to understand in a full-screen vertical frame.
- One live session can generate material for Twitch clips, Stories, TikTok, Reels and Shorts.
- Native dual output can reduce manual reframing compared with producing a separate vertical broadcast.
Costs and limitations
- An automatic crop can hide a gameplay HUD, inventory, teammate or important peripheral action.
- Text, alerts and facecam layouts that work in 16:9 can become unreadable in 9:16.
- Feed exposure does not guarantee watch time, follows, chat participation or a lasting community.
- Creators may feel pressure to optimize for quick attention even when their best work is long-form and conversational.
- Different viewers can receive different recommendations, so a streamer should not assume everyone sees the same feed.
A practical vertical-content checklist
- Build a 9:16-safe scene. Keep the main subject near the center and leave room for a facecam, captions, alerts and chat without covering critical action.
- Test on an actual phone. Check gameplay, overlays, notifications and audio at mobile size before going live.
- Make text larger. Small HUD elements and desktop-sized alerts are difficult to read in a swipeable feed.
- Choose clips with a clear arc. A strong beginning, payoff and enough context work better than a moment that requires several minutes of backstory.
- Use captions where available. Twitch has announced plans for creators to edit clip-caption text, timing and style; captions also help viewers watching without sound.
- Measure the right outcome. Compare feed impressions, click-throughs, live-viewer increases, follows, chatters, watch time and returning viewers—not clip views alone.
- Repurpose selectively. Reframe and retitle clips for TikTok, Reels and Shorts, while checking music rights, branding, captions and each platform’s rules.

What the feed does not guarantee
- It does not guarantee recommendation placement or growth for a small channel.
- It does not replace category browsing, tags, search, followed channels or event pages.
- It does not turn every vertical crop into a good vertical production.
- It does not make a clip’s audience automatically become regular live viewers.
- It does not make every monetization feature a cash payout.
In May 2026, Twitch expanded access to tools including Bits, subscriptions, emotes, badges and Channel Points for eligible streamers, but Twitch says payout eligibility still requires Affiliate or Partner status. Read Twitch’s monetization announcement.
How Twitch compares with TikTok, Shorts and Reels
TikTok remains the strongest fit for general-purpose short-form discovery. YouTube Shorts connects short videos with long-form channels and livestreams, while Instagram Reels benefits from Instagram’s social graph and messaging ecosystem. Twitch is best suited to creators whose core value is live interaction, chat and an ongoing community.

No platform universally produces better reach. The sensible choice depends on the creator’s format, existing audience, editing time, monetization goals and willingness to manage multiple communities. Twitch clips can be an entry point to a live channel, but they should communicate a recognizable identity rather than chase views in isolation.
Bottom line
Twitch is not “getting” a TikTok-style feed in the simple future-tense sense. Its Discovery Feed and Clips Feed have been available since 2024. In 2026, Twitch is extending that vertical, mobile-first approach with Stories, stronger clip integration and Dual Format Streaming, which lets all streamers present horizontal and vertical live versions of one broadcast. The opportunity is real, but reach and revenue still depend on the quality of the content, the viewer’s recommendations and the creator’s ability to turn a quick mobile impression into a durable community.
