Make an AI voice song cover only after you have permission to use the singer’s voice, the recording, and the composition. Separate the vocal, convert it with a consented voice model, keep proof of every permission, and disclose AI use when a platform requires it. The workflow below is designed for documentary creators and video makers who need an auditable rights trail.
What You Need Before Converting A Vocal
- Voice consent: Get written permission from the person whose identity the model represents. Specify the song, platforms, territory, duration, edits, monetization and whether you may train a custom model.
- Recording permission: Confirm that you may upload and transform the vocal or instrumental file. A purchased download does not automatically grant remix or upload rights.
- Composition clearance: Covers still use the underlying lyrics and melody. Check the licenses required for your release destination before publishing.
- Evidence folder: Save the consent message, source-file license, model terms, export date and final disclosure text with the project.

Step-By-Step Consent-First Workflow
- Define the release: Write down the target platform, audience, monetization, territory, duration and whether the cover will appear in a documentary, trailer or social clip.
- Get voice permission: Use a signed release or clear written authorization naming the singer and the intended AI conversion. If the model imitates a public artist, obtain authorization from the artist or rights holder; do not infer consent from fame or availability.
- Clear the song and recording: Identify who controls the composition and the particular recording. Obtain the permissions your destination requires, then store the source file and license together.
- Prepare two stems: Work from an authorized vocal and instrumental, or use a stem tool only where your upload and transformation rights allow it. Keep the original files unchanged so an editor can audit the process.
- Choose the voice model: Select a model whose license matches your release. For a custom model, confirm that training is allowed and that every reference recording was supplied with consent.
- Convert a short test: Start with a short, non-public section. Preserve the original melody, timing and phrasing, then adjust pitch or key only where the arrangement requires it. Reject outputs with unintended identity cues or artifacts that misrepresent the performer.
- Review the full cover: Check lyrics, pronunciation, breaths, timing, clipping, instrumental balance and whether the result could be mistaken for an official artist release. Keep the source, settings and export in the evidence folder.
- Label and publish carefully: State that the vocal is AI-converted and identify the authorized performer or model owner where your agreement allows. Spotify announced that vocal impersonation is allowed only when the impersonated artist has authorized it and that it supports DDEX AI disclosures in credits (Spotify’s September 2025 AI policy report). Spotify also announced an “AI Persona” badge for identities that may be AI-generated (Spotify’s August 2026 announcement).
- Archive the proof: Save the final audio, consent, licenses, model terms, disclosure copy and publication URL. Recheck terms before making a new version or uploading to another service.
Prompt And Session Notes For A Defensible Cover
Use a written brief such as: “Convert this authorized vocal performance to the consented model; preserve melody, tempo, lyric timing and emotional phrasing; do not add spoken lines or imitate any other singer; export the approved version for [project and platform].” Record the model name, source stem, key, pitch changes, date and reviewer decision beside that brief. This creates a reproducible production note without claiming that a tool supports a particular genre or release license.
