How to Create Background Music for Games With AI

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Create game background music by composing for the moment the player inhabits, generating a restrained instrumental bed, then shaping and testing it as a loop or set of layers in the game. AI can supply musical material; the supplied product details do not establish that any of these tools exports engine-ready loops or adaptive game-audio systems, so plan to verify and finish those parts in your own audio workflow.

Choose A Starting Tool For The Cue

Pick based on the kind of source material you need. These are supported starting points for instrumental background music; none is specifically documented here as a game-loop or adaptive-music generator.

Tool Useful Starting Point Established Output Or Control
SOUNDRAW Instrumental music shaped around a scene’s mood and length. Generate by genre, mood, theme, instruments, tempo, and length; adjust instruments or track elements. WAV and stem downloads are limited to Artist Pro, Artist Unlimited, and Enterprise.
Mubert Long-form instrumental material based on mood or BPM. Generates from text, images, mood, genre, and BPM. Paid plans support tracks up to 25 minutes and lossless WAV downloads; commercial use starts with Pro.
Soundverse AI Beat Maker A complete instrumental you intend to edit into separate musical parts. Generates instrumentals with drums, basslines, melodies, and arrangements; exports WAV mixes, separated stems, and MIDI. Creator & Pro include commercial licenses.

Build The Cue Around Gameplay

  1. Write a one-line brief. Name the location, player activity, emotional temperature, and how long the cue must work before it repeats. For example: “Quiet subterranean archive; slow exploration; curious but uneasy; stays unobtrusive over footsteps and dialogue.”
  2. Decide what the music must leave clear. List the sounds that matter most in the scene: dialogue, footsteps, interface sounds, combat effects, or environmental audio. Ask for a sparse arrangement and avoid lead melodies that compete with those sounds. These are creative directions; the tools do not document game-specific mixing controls.
  3. Set musical boundaries before generating. Choose a restrained energy level, a small palette, and a tempo that fits the player’s pace. For an exploration cue, try soft sustained tones, a light pulse, and occasional short motifs. For a tense stealth area, try low drones, sparse percussion, and long gaps. These examples are briefs, not confirmed presets or guaranteed outputs.
  4. Generate a few candidates from the same brief. In SOUNDRAW, set the available genre, mood, theme, instruments, tempo, and length controls to match the brief. In Mubert, try a text description such as “instrumental background music for slow exploration in a quiet underground archive, curious and uneasy, sparse, low intensity.” If using Soundverse AI Beat Maker, generate instrumental material with the restrained drums, bass, and melody you want to develop. Check each vendor’s current interface for the available controls and input methods.
  5. Choose for gameplay fit, not standalone impact. Listen while imagining dialogue and game effects. Prefer the candidate whose pulse, density, and melodic activity can sit behind play for repeated visits. Reject a striking hook if it draws attention away from the scene.
  6. Make a loop or layer plan. Decide whether this cue should repeat as one bed or whether separate parts could change with gameplay. Soundverse AI Beat Maker offers stem and MIDI exports, and SOUNDRAW offers plan-limited stems; the supplied details do not establish seamless-loop export or adaptive playback in either. Treat loop editing, transitions, and in-game triggering as separate production work.

Turn The Candidate Into Game Background Music

  1. Arrange for repetition. Find a musically stable phrase and trim at a point that makes sense with its rhythm and harmony. Listen to the ending flowing directly into the beginning several times. If the join clicks, jumps in loudness, or makes the harmony feel unfinished, adjust the edit or choose another phrase. The products’ supplied details do not promise automatic seamless looping.
  2. Keep alternate states compatible. If you have separate stems or parts, make a quieter and fuller version from the same musical idea. Keep their tempo and harmonic center compatible so changing intensity does not sound like a new unrelated track. Test the exports in the editing or game-audio setup you use; engine compatibility and implementation details are not established for these products.
  3. Check the music against the scene. Play it beneath representative dialogue and effects at realistic levels. Reduce busy parts or regenerate a sparser candidate if the music masks important cues. Check the transition into silence or the next area as well as the loop itself.
  4. Export and document the delivery. Use an output the downstream project accepts, and record the cue name, intended scene, loop edit points, source version, and any processing. Confirm the target project’s format and import requirements separately; no specific game engine or delivery format is established here.

Check Rights Before Shipping

Game use depends on the vendor’s current terms and the plan used to generate and download the music. SOUNDRAW’s licensing is plan-dependent; Mubert says Creator is non-commercial and commercial use starts with Pro; Soundverse lists commercial licenses for Creator & Pro. Those facts do not settle every game’s distribution, territory, or use case, so review the applicable terms with the vendor before release. If a cue includes a voice, cover, or uploaded sample, confirm you have the necessary consent and check the platform’s rules for that material.
