The right fix depends on what is failing: the Last.fm app may crash, login may loop, or music may play without reaching your profile. Start with the symptom below. Before clearing app data or reinstalling, check your Last.fm profile in a browser so you do not risk losing scrobbles queued on your device.
First, identify the problem
- The app crashes, freezes, or stays blank: start with the app and network checks below.
- You cannot sign in: check your username and stored session.
- Music plays but no tracks appear: investigate the player integration, background access, and account connection.
- Tracks appear twice or stay stuck: check for multiple scrobblers or stale playback state.
- Only one music service fails: troubleshoot that service’s Last.fm connection, not every app on your phone.
- The app is missing from Google Play: check device and regional availability; do not install an APK from an unknown site.
A quick diagnostic: open Last.fm in a browser, then compare it with the app and the music service. If the website and several integrations fail together, a service-side issue is more likely. If the website works but the app does not, focus on the phone or app session. A successful login alone does not prove scrobbling works: test a track and confirm it appears on your profile.
If the app crashes, freezes, or will not load
Android
- Open Settings → Apps → Last.fm and tap Force stop.
- Open Storage & cache → Clear cache, then launch Last.fm again. Menu names vary by Android manufacturer.
- If the screen is still blank or the app freezes, restart the phone and install any Last.fm update offered in Google Play.
- Reinstall only after checking your web profile for recent plays. Removing the app may erase local settings or information that has not yet been submitted.
iPhone
- Open the app switcher—swipe up from the bottom, or double-click the Home button on models with one—and swipe Last.fm away.
- Reopen Last.fm. If it still fails, restart the iPhone and check for an update in the App Store.
- Delete and reinstall only after checking your Last.fm profile in a browser; local settings or unsent information may be lost.
Clearing a cache can help with some damaged local app state, but it does not repair an expired authorization or a Last.fm service outage.
If you cannot sign in
- Try logging in at the Last.fm website. If web login works but the app does not, the app may have a stale saved session.
- Use your Last.fm username, not necessarily your email address. Last.fm’s login guidance specifically advises checking the username when a password change has not resolved access.
- If needed, reset your password through Last.fm’s official login flow. Avoid repeatedly resetting it if the username or app session is the actual problem.
- Sign out and back in if the app allows it. For a music-service connection, revoke and reconnect only that affected integration.
Last.fm’s API documentation identifies error 9 as an invalid session key: the client needs to reauthenticate before retrying. Do not enter your Last.fm password into an unofficial app unless it uses a recognizable Last.fm authorization page and you understand the requested access.

If music plays but Last.fm records nothing
The official Last.fm app may not be the component that detects playback. Scrobbling could come from a music service’s own Last.fm connection, the Last.fm app, a separate scrobbler, a desktop client, or another API-based integration. Find which one is responsible before changing settings.
- Play a track long enough to qualify under the music service’s scrobbling rules, then check your Last.fm profile on the web—not just the app’s recent-activity screen.
- Confirm that the player is connected to the Last.fm account you are viewing, and that playback is not offline.
- Disconnect and reconnect the affected integration if its authorization appears broken.
- Allow background activity and mobile data for the app that detects or submits plays. On Android, also check battery restrictions and Data Saver.
- Test another track. If possible, test a second music service to see whether the problem is limited to one integration.
Offline plays may wait in a local queue and appear later. Do not clear app storage until you have checked whether the client has unsent plays. Last.fm’s API guidance recommends retaining failed scrobbles for later submission; a notification that a track was detected is not, by itself, proof that Last.fm stored it.
Android background and battery settings
If scrobbling works while Last.fm is open but stops when the phone is locked, the operating system or manufacturer software may be stopping background work. In the app’s battery settings, choose Unrestricted or allow background activity where offered. Also check these controls:

- Allow notifications if the scrobbler uses one to show its status.
- Remove the app from manufacturer-specific sleeping, auto-cleanup, or app-freezing lists.
- Check whether Battery Saver or Data Saver blocks background activity or network access.
- Avoid swiping the app away if your device treats that gesture as a force-stop.
- Recheck permissions after a major Android update or app reinstall.
Settings vary across Android versions and manufacturers, and permitting background activity cannot guarantee uninterrupted scrobbling on every device.
iPhone background and media-access limits
iOS limits what third-party apps can monitor in the background, and music services differ in their authorization and playback behavior. Background App Refresh does not guarantee continuous scrobbling. If an iPhone app cannot access Apple Music playback information, check Settings → Privacy & Security → Media & Apple Music and allow access for the relevant app, if it appears there.
Third-party clients such as Finale for Last.fm offer different features and may suit some iPhone or Mac users, but they are not official Last.fm replacements and do not guarantee a fix for every integration.

If tracks are duplicated or stuck on one song
Duplicates often mean more than one component is submitting the same playback: for example, a streaming service’s Last.fm connection and a separate scrobbler may both be active. Stale playback metadata or a resumed track being treated as a new play can also cause confusing results.

- Disable all but one. Stop playback and force-close the duplicate scrobbler.
- Reopen the scrobbler you intend to use, play one track, and inspect your Last.fm profile.
- If incorrect entries are already on your history, remove them if your account or client provides editing or deletion.
Changing one source at a time makes it easier to identify the component submitting unwanted plays.
If the app says it scrobbled but your profile does not update
A local notification can mean only that the app detected a track. The request still has to reach Last.fm, receive a successful response, and appear on the account you are checking. Last.fm’s API documentation cautions that an HTTP 200 response alone does not prove a scrobble succeeded; clients must inspect the Last.fm response status.

- Refresh your web profile after a few minutes and check that you are viewing the correct username.
- Check whether the play happened offline and is waiting in the client’s queue.
- If the integration reports an invalid session, reauthenticate it rather than repeatedly clearing the app.
- If you are using a client that reports an API error, Last.fm identifies errors 11 (service offline) and 16 (service temporarily unavailable) as retryable. Its documentation says clients should retry these later; batches can contain up to 50 scrobbles.
Do not clear storage while you are trying to preserve plays that have not reached Last.fm.

There is no basis here to claim a live outage. Check Last.fm in a browser, try a second network, and compare the app with other Last.fm-connected services. Recent support topics about scrobbling and resolved support topics can help show whether others have reported similar symptoms, but user posts do not establish a universal outage.

If the website, app, and multiple integrations fail at once, wait and retry rather than repeatedly revoking connections. Last.fm’s API guidance says to retry later for temporary service errors.

If Last.fm is unavailable in Google Play
The official Android listing is Last.fm by Last.fm Ltd. (package fm.last.android). The listing showed an update on October 23, 2025 when checked for this guide; store details can change. If you cannot find it, distinguish a regional store restriction from a device marked incompatible or an app that installs but crashes. Avoid downloading APKs from unknown sites. You can use the Last.fm website, or consider a reputable third-party client only if it supports your platform and needs.
When to try another scrobbler
Consider an alternative only after isolating the failure to the current app or integration. Finale for Last.fm is a third-party Apple-platform client. Mac users can also review Scrobbles for Last.fm, whose listing describes a desktop scrobbler with offline-cache behavior. Features, platform support, and availability can change; neither is an Android replacement, and a new client will not fix a Last.fm account authentication problem by itself.
What to send Last.fm support
If the steps above do not isolate the problem, include enough detail for support to distinguish an account issue from a device or integration issue:
- Your Last.fm username.
- Phone model, operating system version, and Last.fm app version.
- Music-player name and version, plus any other active scrobbler.
- Approximate failure time and timezone, and whether the Last.fm website works.
- Whether tracks are missing, delayed, duplicated, stuck, or attributed to unexpected metadata.
- Exact error text or code, and whether reconnecting or reinstalling changed anything.
Last.fm’s scrobbling support topics provide a route to discuss integration problems.
