Amazon launched miniTV in India on May 15, 2021, as a free, ad-supported video service inside its shopping app. It did not require Prime or a separate app. But miniTV is now a historical name: Amazon combined it with MX Player in 2024 as Amazon MX Player, and in 2026 began integrating that service’s catalog into Prime Video.
What Amazon launched in 2021
Amazon announced miniTV for India on May 15, 2021. At launch, viewers could open it from the Amazon shopping app on Android, choose a programme and watch without a Prime subscription or a separate miniTV app. The service was free to watch but supported by advertising. Amazon said iOS and mobile-web access would follow; those were planned expansions, not launch-day availability. Amazon’s launch announcement described miniTV and Prime Video as separate video offerings.
The India-specific launch mattered: this was not a new global streaming destination added to every Amazon app. It was an in-app video service aimed at Indian viewers.

The original pitch emphasized professionally produced and curated Indian digital entertainment: web series, comedy, technology, food, beauty and fashion programming, alongside creator-led videos. Amazon named TVF and Pocket Aces as early studio partners and listed creators including Ashish Chanchlani, Amit Bhadana, Round2Hell, Harsh Beniwal, Prajakta Koli and Aakash Gupta. That was a launch announcement, not a permanent or exhaustive catalogue.

The offering grew beyond that initial creator-and-lifestyle emphasis. In 2023, Amazon described miniTV as carrying web series, reality programming, short films, sketches and international shows. After the MX Player combination, Amazon MX Player’s stated mix expanded to include originals, reality shows, movies, short films, micro-dramas and international programmes dubbed into Indian languages. Titles and availability change, so an old miniTV listing should not be treated as a current catalogue.

The difference was not simply that miniTV had short clips and Prime Video had full-length shows. miniTV developed a broader catalogue over time, and Prime Video later included multiple ways to access content, including rentals and add-on subscriptions. Today, Amazon is bringing free and paid offerings together in one Prime Video interface, but that does not make their catalogues or access terms identical.

Why put streaming inside a shopping app?
The placement gave Amazon a way to put video in front of people already using its Indian shopping app, and the free, ad-supported model could reach viewers who did not want to pay for Prime. It also gave the company another format for advertising. Those are reasonable strategic implications of the product design, rather than a complete account of Amazon’s internal launch rationale. When announcing the later MX Player combination, Amazon explicitly highlighted the opportunity for advertisers to reach Indian viewers and connect campaigns with Amazon customer signals.

From miniTV to Amazon MX Player and Prime Video
- May 15, 2021: Amazon launches miniTV in India as a free, ad-supported feature within its shopping app.
- 2023: Amazon describes a growing service with series, reality programmes, short films, sketches and international shows.
- October 7, 2024: Amazon announces that it acquired certain MX Player assets and combined MX Player with miniTV under the name Amazon MX Player. The company said the merged service would remain free and ad-supported. Amazon’s merger announcement reported 250 million combined unique users in September 2024; that figure is Amazon’s claim, not an independent audience measurement.
- July 16, 2026: Amazon says it has begun bringing Amazon MX Player’s free and paid content together inside Prime Video. The announced “Free to Me” area is intended to make free, ad-supported viewing available to non-Prime users, without requiring them to sign up for Prime or create an account. The rollout is phased and device-dependent.
Where to look for it now
For current access in India, search for Amazon MX Player or look for free programming in Prime Video’s “Free to Me” area. Amazon has described MX Player content as available across its shopping app, MX Player apps, Prime Video, Fire TV, connected TVs and the web, with some distribution through partners such as Jio TV and Airtel Xstream. The exact app, title selection and availability can differ by device, language and rollout stage.

Amazon said in July 2026 that MX Player apps on living-room devices, the web and iOS were expected to redirect or transition to Prime Video apps over the following weeks. That announcement does not mean every device migration is complete. If you cannot find “miniTV,” try searching for Amazon MX Player or check Prime Video for “Free to Me.” If a title prompts for a Prime subscription, it may be paid Prime Video content rather than part of the free catalogue. Ads are expected in the free service; having an Amazon account or Prime membership does not make that catalogue ad-free.

Amazon MX Player is most relevant to viewers in India who want no-cost, legal streaming and are willing to watch ads, particularly those interested in Indian-language, creator-led or dubbed programming. It is not a complete replacement for Prime Video: premium originals, rentals, add-on services and other paid titles may require payment or a Prime membership. The free service’s catalogue and access options can also vary, so check the label and terms for the specific programme and device.

Readers outside India should not assume the service is available in their local Amazon app. miniTV launched in India, and the current brand and interface changes described here concern Amazon’s India offering.
