If Netflix displays “Netflix has encountered an error. Retrying in [X] seconds. Code: NW-2-4,” a network problem is preventing your TV or connected device from reaching Netflix. The code usually points to the connection path—not your account, subscription, or a specific show. Start by checking whether other apps work, then troubleshoot the device and network before changing settings or reinstalling Netflix. Netflix’s NW-2-4 guidance covers smart TVs, streaming devices, set-top boxes, Blu-ray players, and PlayStation consoles.
What Netflix error NW-2-4 means
NW-2-4 identifies a reachability problem between the device you are watching on and Netflix. The device may be offline, connected to a network that restricts streaming, unable to resolve Netflix’s domains, or relying on an unstable connection. Slow internet can contribute, but the code does not simply mean “your internet is too slow.”
It also does not prove that Netflix is down. The code most often directs attention to the device’s connection or the network it uses, though the code alone cannot rule out a broader service problem.

Menu names differ among TV brands, streaming sticks, set-top boxes, and operating-system versions. For device-specific connection instructions, consult the manufacturer’s manual or support site; Netflix also provides general network-connectivity guidance.

Start with two quick checks
- Try another app on the affected device, or run its built-in network test. If other apps also fail, focus first on the device’s internet connection, Wi-Fi or Ethernet, router, modem, or ISP. If they work, continue with Netflix-specific access and settings checks.
- Compare devices and networks. Does Netflix fail on one device or across the household? Does it work on the same device using another network? These comparisons help separate a device issue from a network-wide problem.
Other apps working does not guarantee that Netflix is reachable: a device may connect to some services but fail to resolve or reach Netflix. Likewise, a successful speed test does not rule out a DNS, routing, access-control, or stability problem.
Restart the device and home network
First fully power off the TV, console, or streaming device—not just put it into standby. Leave it off for at least 15 seconds, turn it back on, and try Netflix again. Netflix’s general TV and streaming-device restart instructions recommend this full power-down. Some streaming players have different procedures; Netflix also describes unplugging one, pressing its power button once and waiting a minute, or leaving it unplugged for three minutes before reconnecting it in its connection troubleshooting guidance.
If the error remains, restart the modem and router:

- Turn off the viewing device.
- Unplug the modem and router from power.
- Wait 30 seconds, then plug them back in.
- Wait about one minute for the network to reconnect and its indicator lights to settle. Some equipment takes longer.
- Turn the viewing device on and retry Netflix.
This follows Netflix’s NW-2-4 restart sequence. It can clear a temporary connection fault, but it will not remove a streaming restriction on a managed network or correct every DNS or ISP problem.
Check the kind of network you are using
Hotel, school, office, or other managed Wi-Fi
Hotels, cafés, schools, workplaces, apartment buildings, dormitories, hospitals, airports, and other shared venues may restrict video streaming. Ask the network administrator whether Netflix is allowed; restarting your TV will not override a policy that blocks it.
Some networks also require a browser-based sign-in or acceptance of terms before granting internet access. A phone or laptop may need to complete that captive-portal step, and the TV may not be able to display the login page. If the network does not provide a practical way for the TV to authenticate, ask its administrator for an approved option.

Mobile hotspot, cellular, or satellite service
Netflix cautions that hotspots, cellular connections, and satellite networks may not provide a fast or stable enough connection for playback. Browsing successfully does not guarantee a reliable video stream. Signal changes, congestion, data limits, carrier restrictions, and satellite latency or usage policies can all matter. A speed-test result is only a snapshot, not proof that the connection will remain stable for an entire viewing session.
Home Wi-Fi signal
If the problem is limited to a device on Wi-Fi, move it closer to the router—ideally into the same room—and try again. Put the router in an open, elevated location, such as a desk or bookshelf, rather than on the floor or inside a cabinet. Keep it away from other wireless devices and appliances where practical. These are Netflix’s suggested Wi-Fi improvements.
As additional diagnostic tests, try Ethernet if the device supports it, test near the router, or temporarily reduce other high-bandwidth activity. If the TV connects through a mesh system, check whether its access point has a weak connection to the main router. Ethernet working while Wi-Fi fails points toward wireless coverage or interference, rather than automatically identifying an ISP fault.

Restore custom network settings before changing them further
If you or someone else configured a VPN, proxy, custom DNS, or non-default modem or router setting, temporarily restore the normal defaults and retry Netflix. Netflix lists these custom settings among possible connection causes in its NW-2-4 troubleshooting instructions.
Do not change DNS to a random third-party address as a first step. Netflix’s PlayStation instructions specify automatic DNS, not a particular outside provider. A VPN or proxy may affect routing, but its presence alone does not prove it caused the error. If you are unsure what a setting does, restore the original configuration if you can do so safely, or ask your ISP or device manufacturer for help.

PlayStation 4
- Open the main menu and select Settings > Network > Set Up Internet Connection.
- For Wi-Fi, choose Use Wi-Fi > Custom, then select your network. For a cable connection, choose Use a LAN Cable > Custom > Operation mode.
- Set IP Address Settings to Automatic, DHCP Host to Don’t Specify, DNS Settings to Automatic, Proxy Server to Don’t Use, and MTU Settings to Automatic.
- Choose Test Connection, then try Netflix again.
PlayStation 5
- From the Home screen, open Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection.
- For wireless, select the Wi-Fi network and then Advanced Settings. For wired, select Wired LAN > Advanced Settings.
- Set IP Address Settings to Automatic, DHCP Host to Don’t Specify, DNS Settings to Automatic, Proxy Server to Don’t Use, and MTU Settings to Automatic.
- Select OK to test the connection, then retry Netflix.
Use the symptom to choose what to try next

When to contact your ISP
If the device and network restarts, connection checks, and relevant settings changes do not help, ask your internet service provider to check for a local outage, modem or router faults, network configuration problems, and DNS resolution issues. Tell the support representative:
- Whether one device or multiple devices are affected.
- Whether the affected device uses Wi-Fi or a direct cable connection.
- Whether other apps work on that device.
- Whether Netflix works when the device uses another network.
Netflix asks ISPs investigating NW-2-4 to check whether the device can connect to secure.netflix.com, appboot.netflix.com, uiboot.netflix.com, and fast.com. You can open Fast.com in a browser to test speed and connection to Netflix; retry playback before ending the support call. These checks can help narrow the fault, but a Fast.com result alone does not prove every Netflix connection, device, or network condition is working.
If you contact Netflix or the device maker rather than the ISP, have the exact code, device model, connection type, and results of your one-device-versus-household and same-network-versus-other-network comparisons ready. What not to do first
- Do not assume Netflix is down. NW-2-4 points to a connection problem but cannot, by itself, confirm a service-wide outage.
- Do not change DNS to a provider you found online as a guaranteed fix. Restore defaults first; on PlayStation, Netflix specifies automatic DNS.
- Do not factory-reset the TV or reinstall Netflix as the first response. The official NW-2-4 troubleshooting flow prioritizes network access, restarts, default connection settings, and ISP checks.
- Do not keep repeating a restart if the error quickly returns across devices. A recurring, network-wide problem calls for investigation of the router, DNS, or ISP connection.
