This is a historical guide to the U.S. Fire TV ecosystem in 2019. “Firestick TV channels” was informal shorthand: most entries were apps or streaming services, not traditional broadcast channels. Some were free with advertising, some required subscriptions, and others unlocked content only after a cable, satellite, live-TV, league-pass, or library login.
App catalogs, prices, rights and regional availability changed frequently. The source list was later updated on August 31, 2020, so the recommendations below should be read as a dated 2019 snapshot, not a current installation guide. Amazon notes that Fire TV content and app availability vary by country and device.

These are editorial picks for different needs, not an objective ranking. A “best” app for free movies may be a poor substitute for local sports or cable news.

Free movies and television
- Pluto TV — Free with ads: A combination of scheduled, linear channels and on-demand movies and shows. Its channel count and lineup varied by market; January 2019 coverage described more than 100 channels, a dated figure rather than a permanent specification.
- Tubi — Free with ads: A large rotating catalog of movies and television. It was on-demand rather than a full cable replacement, and catalog rights differed by country.
- Sony Crackle — Free with ads: Ad-supported movies and series, with a smaller and changing catalog.
- Popcornflix — Free with ads: Free movies and television, but catalog depth and video quality varied.
- Dailymotion and Vimeo — Generally free: User, creator and publisher video. Neither was a conventional channel service, and availability depended on individual rights holders.
Library and public-interest viewing
Hoopla — Free with a participating library card: Borrow movies, television, music, audiobooks and books through an eligible library. Borrowing limits, titles and device support were set by the library system; it was not universally available.

Free live news and weather
WeatherNation, selected local-news applications, CBS News/CBSN, ABC News, NBC News, Bloomberg, BBC News, Sky News and other network applications offered combinations of free live feeds, clips and on-demand reports in the 2019 period. A free app did not necessarily provide every local affiliate or the full cable network feed. International services and local streams were especially location-dependent.
YouTube and browser viewing
YouTube’s Fire TV status changed during 2019. Rather than treating sideloading as the normal solution, note that Amazon confirmed an official YouTube app on compatible Fire TV devices, alongside YouTube TV and YouTube Kids: Amazon’s announcement. YouTube provided user-created video, music, news and some live streams, but was not itself a traditional live-TV replacement.
Firefox and Amazon Silk could open publisher websites and browser-based streams when no dedicated app existed. Browser access is an access method, not a channel, and playback quality and login support varied.

On-demand subscriptions
- Netflix: Subscription on-demand movies and series; no conventional live-TV package.
- Amazon Prime Video: Prime membership and individually subscribed or rented titles; Prime Video Channels were separate subscriptions.
- Hulu: On-demand programming, with Hulu + Live TV as a separate live package.
- Premium network services: HBO-related products and other premium apps changed names, packaging and authentication rules during this period. Availability depended on date and market.
- BET+: Paramount announced its Fire TV availability in September 2019; the service required its own subscription.
Live-TV replacements
- Sling TV — Subscription: Paid live channels with plan-based lineups. Historical coverage described packages with more than 100 channels, but channel counts depended on plan, market and date. It was principally a U.S. service.
- YouTube TV — Subscription: Broad live-TV bundle with cloud DVR features in its 2019 form; local stations and channels varied by market.
- Hulu + Live TV — Subscription: Live networks combined with Hulu’s on-demand catalog; not all local affiliates or channels were available everywhere.
- FuboTV — Subscription: A sports-oriented live service where offered, with lineup and regional-rights limitations.
Paid services can replace some cable functions, but stacking several subscriptions can cost more than expected. Compare local channels, DVR, simultaneous streams, sports rights and blackouts—not just the advertised channel count.
Apps requiring a TV-provider login
Many apps were free to install but not free to watch. ESPN, Fox News, NBC Sports, CNN, Food Network GO, Cooking Channel GO and similar “TV Everywhere” products commonly required credentials from a participating cable, satellite or live-TV provider. Some supplied only clips or selected free streams without authentication.
Before installing, check four things: whether your provider participates, whether the app offers live video or only clips, whether your local affiliate is included, and whether location restrictions apply.

Sports apps and league passes
- ESPN: Network and event access, usually through a provider login and, for some programming, a separate subscription.
- NBA League Pass: League-specific subscription; blackouts and national exclusivity could prevent viewing a particular game.
- MLB.TV and MLB At Bat: Baseball access subject to local and national blackouts.
- NFL-related services: Availability depended on the season, service, device and rights package; an app did not guarantee every game.
- NBC Sports, Fox Sports and regional sports apps: Often required a participating TV provider and were constrained by regional rights.
- Pluto TV and news apps: Free sports news, highlights and selected programming, not universal live-game access.
“Available on Firestick” means the application could be installed—not that every local broadcast, blackout-free stream or regional sports network was included.

Music, radio and podcasts
- TuneIn — Free tier and premium options: Radio stations, sports, news, weather, talk, podcasts and music.
- Pandora — Free with ads; paid tier: Personalized radio rather than an unlimited on-demand catalog in its basic form.
- Spotify — Free with limitations; premium subscription: Music and podcasts, with playback and advertising restrictions on the free tier.
- iHeartRadio — Free with ads; paid options: Broadcast radio, custom stations, podcasts and selected live programming.
- SiriusXM — Subscription: Premium satellite and streaming radio channels.
- TIDAL — Subscription: On-demand music, video and curated content.
- Vevo — Generally free with ads: Music videos, not a complete replacement for an on-demand music subscription.
Kids’ apps
- YouTube Kids: Curated children’s video with availability dependent on compatible device and region; Amazon’s YouTube announcement confirms official Fire TV support.
- HappyKids: Children’s movies, shows and educational programming, generally ad-supported or with optional paid features.
- Popcornflix Kids: Free children’s catalog where available.
- Pokémon TV: Official Pokémon episodes and clips, with rotating availability.
- Netflix kids’ profiles: Paid Netflix access with a child-focused profile.
- Hoopla: Library-borrowed children’s video where a participating library supplied titles.
Check whether an app has a child profile, advertising, curated or user-generated content, purchase controls and voice-search restrictions. “Free” does not automatically mean ad-free or fully curated.
Food, health and fitness
- Food Network GO and Cooking Channel GO: Recipe and television content, with much of the access generally dependent on a participating TV-provider login.
- America’s Test Kitchen, iFood.tv and Allrecipes: Recipe demonstrations, cooking instruction and searchable food content; access models varied.
- Gaia: Yoga, fitness, meditation and wellness programming behind a membership.
- Yoga TV and similar fitness apps: Exercise and instructional video, often with a mixture of free previews and paid libraries.
Utilities and access tools
Amazon Silk, Firefox, Downloader, Plex and media players helped users reach websites, personal media or files. They were not television channels. Downloader and sideloading were sometimes mentioned in historical coverage when an official app was unavailable, but unknown APK files create malware and privacy risks and may stop working after Fire OS updates.
A VPN can improve privacy on some networks, but it is not a subscription, a source of streaming rights or a guarantee of access around geographic restrictions or sports blackouts. Services can block VPN traffic, reduce performance or restrict accounts.

- Open the Fire TV home screen.
- Choose Search and enter the service name.
- Select the official Amazon Appstore listing.
- Choose Get, Download or Install.
- Open the app and sign in, activate it, or enter provider credentials if requested.

Build a sensible 2019-style bundle
- Free-first: Pluto TV + Tubi + Crackle + Hoopla, supplemented by free news and radio apps.
- Entertainment: Netflix plus Hulu or Prime Video; avoid subscribing to overlapping catalogs without checking what you actually watch.
- Sports: A live-TV service for broad network coverage plus the specific league pass you need, after checking blackouts.
- News: Free CBS, ABC, NBC, Bloomberg, WeatherNation and local apps, adding a paid live-TV service only if a particular cable network or local station is essential.
What not to treat as a legitimate channel list
Pirated IPTV, “fully loaded” or “jailbroken” Firesticks, unknown APK repositories and apps promising every premium channel free are not legitimate substitutes for a subscription. They can expose viewers to malware, stolen credentials, unreliable streams and legal risk. Changing Firestick settings does not turn it into a free cable box.

Historical caveats
The Amazon Appstore was—and remains—a moving target. An app listed in January 2019 could later be renamed, removed, restricted or replaced. Amazon’s Fire TV documentation states that apps and content vary by region. Treat every status, channel count and catalog reference above as time- and market-specific, especially for the United States in 2019.
Frequently Asked Questions
Were these actual television channels?
Usually not. “Channels” was informal wording for Fire TV apps, streaming services, live feeds, websites and subscription products.
Did a free app mean I could watch everything for free?
No. An app could be free to install while requiring advertising, a library card, a TV-provider login, a league pass, Prime membership or a separate subscription.

Could a sports app show every game?
No. Regional blackouts, national exclusivity, local affiliate rights and provider restrictions could block particular games.

For a legal 2019 Fire TV setup, start with free ad-supported services such as Pluto TV, Tubi and Crackle, add Hoopla if your library participated, and choose a paid live-TV or sports service only for channels and events you genuinely need. Always distinguish official Appstore apps from browser access or sideloading, and treat regional availability and authentication as part of the service—not a footnote.
