Netflix error NW-2-5 means your device took too long to connect to Netflix. It usually points to a problem with the device’s internet connection, Wi-Fi, DNS, router, or internet provider—not your Netflix password or subscription. Start with the device’s network test and a restart; then restart the modem and router. On a PS4 or Xbox, restore DNS to automatic before trying manual network changes.
First, find out whether the problem is one device or the whole network
NW-2-5 is a connection timeout, not a diagnosis of one particular fault. A strong Wi-Fi signal does not guarantee that the device can resolve DNS or reach Netflix’s services. Other apps working is useful information, but it does not rule out a Netflix-specific connection problem. Netflix’s NW-2-5 troubleshooting guide describes the error and provides the device and network steps below.
- Only one TV or console fails: Start with that device’s network test, saved Wi-Fi settings, DNS settings, and software.
- Several devices on the same network fail: Suspect the router, DNS, ISP, network restrictions, or a service outage before assuming multiple devices have failed independently.
- Netflix works on a phone over cellular data but not home Wi-Fi: That points toward the home network or its route to Netflix, though it does not identify the exact cause.
- Ethernet works but Wi-Fi does not: Focus on signal, interference, coverage, and wireless congestion. If Wi-Fi works but Ethernet does not, check the cable, router port, switch, or wired settings.
Write down which devices fail, whether they use Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and whether other apps work. That pattern will help if you need to contact your ISP.
Try these fixes in order
1. Run the network tests
If the Netflix error screen offers it, select More Details > Check your network. A red X indicates a likely connection failure. Also run the internet or network test built into the TV, console, or streaming device, and try another online app. If the device’s general network test fails, troubleshoot the connection before reinstalling Netflix.

2. Restart the affected device
- Turn the TV, console, or streaming device off.
- Unplug it from power and wait at least 15 seconds.
- Plug it back in, turn it on, and open Netflix again.
If Netflix is running through a cable box, Netflix advises waiting 3 minutes with the box unplugged before reconnecting it.
3. Restart the modem and router
- Turn off the affected TV or console.
- Unplug the modem and router from power.
- Wait 30 seconds, then plug them back in.
- Allow about 1 minute for them to reconnect; some equipment takes longer.
- Turn the TV or console back on and try Netflix.
If your modem and router are a single unit, unplug that unit. Avoid pressing a factory-reset button: a power restart is not the same as resetting equipment to factory settings.
4. Test the connection and improve Wi-Fi
If the device supports Ethernet, connect it to the router temporarily and try Netflix. A successful wired test suggests a Wi-Fi coverage or interference issue; it does not prove the internet service is perfect. If wired access is not practical:

- Move the device closer to the router, if possible.
- Place the router in an elevated, open, central location, away from metal appliances and sources of wireless interference.
- Temporarily pause high-bandwidth activity on other devices and see whether Netflix connects.
- If the error occurs only in one room, investigate coverage there rather than changing Netflix account settings.
Netflix suggests improving router placement and, when coverage remains poor, considering a repeater or newer router through your ISP. Do not buy equipment based on one error alone: first establish that weak Wi-Fi coverage is actually the issue.
Restore console network settings to automatic
A manually entered DNS address, proxy, or other network value can interfere with a connection. For the consoles below, Netflix’s guidance is to restore the specified defaults—not to try a public DNS address as the first fix.
PS4
- From the PS4 main menu, open Settings > Network > Set Up Internet Connection.
- Choose Use Wi-Fi > Custom and select your Wi-Fi network, or choose Use a LAN Cable > Custom > Operation mode.
- Set IP Address Settings to Automatic.
- Set DHCP Host Name to Don’t Specify.
- Set DNS Settings to Automatic.
- Set Proxy Server to Don’t Use.
- Set MTU Settings to Automatic, then select Test Connection.
- Reopen Netflix.
Selecting Custom is just how you reach these options; it does not mean you should manually enter unfamiliar values. Menu wording can vary with console software.

Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S
- Press the Xbox button.
- Open Profile & system > Settings > General > Network settings > Advanced settings > DNS settings.
- Select Automatic, then try Netflix again.
If the problem remains, restart the console and router and test again.

Xbox 360
- Press the Guide button.
- Open Settings > System Settings > Network Settings.
- Select the connected network, then choose Configure Network > DNS Settings > Automatic.
- Turn the Xbox off and back on, then try Netflix.
Smart TVs, streaming devices, and cable boxes
TV makers use different menus, so there is no reliable universal path. On the TV, streaming stick, or box, open its Network, Connection, or Internet settings and:
- Confirm it is connected to the intended Wi-Fi network and run the device’s network test.
- If the test reports a problem, forget the network and reconnect, entering the Wi-Fi password again if prompted.
- Unplug the device for at least 15 seconds, reconnect it, and retry Netflix. For a cable box, wait 3 minutes.
- Restart the modem and router using the steps above.
- Test with Ethernet if the device supports it.
- Check the device maker’s support page for the exact menu path and any available firmware update.
If only Netflix fails while the device’s connection test and other apps work, keep troubleshooting the network path before considering app-specific steps. Reinstalling Netflix may help an app problem, but it is not the first-line fix for this connection timeout.

Check for managed Wi-Fi, DNS problems, or an ISP issue
Hotel, apartment, school, office, guest, and other public networks may require a sign-in page, be congested, or restrict streaming. Confirm any required network sign-in is complete and ask the network administrator whether streaming is allowed. Some mobile, satellite, or hotspot connections may not be stable or fast enough for reliable streaming.
If the device allows DNS changes and automatic DNS still fails, treat manual DNS as a later diagnostic step. First note the existing settings so you can restore them. The right configuration can depend on the device, router, and network; a public DNS address is not a guaranteed fix. Sony, for example, documents Google Public DNS values 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 for some BRAVIA models, but those instructions are model-specific—not a universal Netflix recommendation. For a basic connection check, visit Fast.com, which tests the connection to Netflix from the device or browser you use. It does not prove that every TV or console on the network can reach all Netflix services. If several devices fail, ask your ISP to check for an outage, DNS trouble, router filtering, or a modem issue. Netflix lists secure.netflix.com, appboot.netflix.com, uiboot.netflix.com, and fast.com as addresses to raise with the provider if needed.

What to tell your ISP
Contact your ISP when several devices on the same network fail, or when device restarts and a modem/router restart do not help. Give them:
- The exact error: Netflix NW-2-5.
- Which devices are affected and whether each uses Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
- Whether other apps work and whether Netflix works over cellular data.
- The device’s network-test result and what happens at Fast.com.
- Whether restarting the modem and router changed anything.
Ask them to check for an outage, DNS resolution problems, router filtering or parental controls, and whether the device can reach Netflix’s listed addresses. If only one device fails while the others work normally, contact the device maker or Netflix support with the same diagnostic details rather than replacing network equipment first.

What not to do first
- Do not keep selecting “Try Again” without testing the connection. It may repeat the same failed attempt.
- Do not change DNS immediately. On PS4 and Xbox, Netflix’s first guidance is automatic DNS.
- Do not factory-reset the TV or console. That can erase settings or saved data and is excessive for a connection timeout.
- Do not assume the account is at fault. NW-2-5 is described as a connection timeout, not an account-authentication error.
- Do not buy a router for one occurrence. Consider coverage equipment only after a wired test or other evidence points to a Wi-Fi dead zone.
