You can download a song from the Internet Archive when its item page provides a downloadable audio file. Open the item, find DOWNLOAD OPTIONS, and choose a listed format. To save just one track from an album or concert, select SHOW ALL and download that track; for a complete recording, use the format download option, which may deliver a ZIP archive. Some items are stream-only or restricted, so playback in your browser does not guarantee a downloadable file.
First, check whether the recording is downloadable
Internet Archive pages are organized as items, and one item may contain a single song, an album, a multi-track concert, a video, or several versions of the same recording. Search by song, artist, album, or collection, then open the item page rather than relying on the search-results page. Search results depend on the metadata supplied for each item, so a title or artist search may not find every relevant recording. See the Internet Archive search guide.
On the item page, look for DOWNLOAD OPTIONS, usually near the player or in a side panel. Its position can vary on mobile or redesigned pages. If there are audio files or format links, you can download the options shown there. If no downloadable audio file appears, the item may be restricted or stream-only. The standard website method cannot turn a stream-only item into a downloadable song; do not try to bypass its access limits. Downloading permission and permission to reuse are separate questions. Before sharing, remixing, reposting, or using a recording publicly or commercially, check the item’s rights or license information and description. The fact that a download link exists does not by itself mean the recording is public domain or free to reuse.

Download one song in a browser
- Open the recording’s item page on Internet Archive.
- Find DOWNLOAD OPTIONS and select SHOW ALL to see the item’s individual files.
- Locate the track by its filename and extension, such as
.mp3or.flac. Formats vary by item. - Click the file link or its download control. If the file opens or plays in the browser instead, right-click it (or control-click on a Mac) and choose the browser’s save-link or download option, if available.
- When the download finishes, find it in your browser’s Downloads list or your device’s Downloads folder.
The SHOW ALL route is useful when you want one file rather than every track in an item. Internet Archive notes that a file may open in the browser depending on its format; see its download instructions.
Download an album or complete concert
For a multi-track item, choose the format you want in DOWNLOAD OPTIONS and click its download icon. When that format contains several files, Internet Archive may package them as a ZIP archive. Let the download finish, then extract the ZIP to access the tracks.

- Windows: Right-click the ZIP and choose Extract All.
- macOS: Double-click the ZIP.
- Android or iPhone: Open it in the device’s Files app or another ZIP utility if the browser does not extract it automatically.
The links labeled Files and Originals are not interchangeable. Files lists downloadable files and derivatives in the item; Originals points to the originally uploaded files and metadata where available. Originals are not necessarily the easiest or most compatible versions for listening. If you just want the music, choose the audio format you need rather than downloading every file, unless you also want metadata, images, or other contents.

Choose an audio format

For ordinary listening, MP3 is usually the simplest choice when it is offered. Choose FLAC or another lossless option when you want to preserve the supplied file without additional lossy compression. “Lossless” describes the encoding of that file, not necessarily the quality of the original recording or transfer. Converting an MP3 to FLAC will not restore audio information already discarded by MP3 compression.

Some eligible Live Music Archive recordings offer specific choices described by Internet Archive as Lossless (ZIP files containing Shorten or FLAC), Hi-Fi (variable-bitrate MP3 at about 160 kbps), and Lo-Fi (64-kbps constant-bitrate MP3). Download many files with the command line
If you are comfortable with a terminal and have installed Internet Archive’s command-line tool, its general download form is ia download IDENTIFIER. Replace IDENTIFIER with the item’s identifier (the part after /details/ in its item-page URL). Without a filter, a command can download more than just the audio.

# Download MP3 files from an item
ia download IDENTIFIER --glob="*.mp3"
# Download FLAC files from an item
ia download IDENTIFIER --glob="*.flac"
# Preview the files that would be downloaded
ia download IDENTIFIER --glob="*.mp3" --dry-run
# Save files in a chosen directory
ia download IDENTIFIER --glob="*.flac" --destdir="./downloads"These filters only match files that the item actually makes available. Consult the Internet Archive command-line guidance for tool setup and options. Some items also offer a Torrent download, which requires a BitTorrent client and is mainly useful for large recordings or collections. Its availability varies, and it is not a way to get around an item’s access restrictions.
Troubleshooting downloads
There is no Download Options area
Check that you opened an item details page, not a collection or search page. Reload the page, scroll below the player, and try another browser or a private window in case an extension or temporary loading problem is interfering. Then inspect SHOW ALL, if present. If there is still no downloadable file, the item may be stream-only or restricted. Internet Archive’s download troubleshooting guide discusses these limitations.

The song plays but will not save
Browser playback only proves that the media can be played there; it does not prove a downloadable file is available. Look for a direct file in SHOW ALL or another listed derivative. If none is offered, there may be no ordinary download option for that item.
The file opens in the browser
Some file types play or display in a browser. Try the file’s download icon, or right-click/control-click the file link and use the browser’s save-link command. If you are viewing the player rather than the file list, return to SHOW ALL and select the direct file link.
The download is a ZIP, or the audio will not play
A ZIP is a container, not an audio format: extract it before opening the tracks. If an extracted file still will not play, check its extension. FLAC, Shorten, or another less common format may need a compatible media player; a metadata file is not a song. Choose an MP3 derivative if one is available and you need broad compatibility. Renaming a file extension does not convert its contents.

Check your connection and available storage, then retry. For a large ZIP, try downloading an individual track from SHOW ALL to narrow down the problem. If a smaller MP3 option is available, it may be easier to download. Do not treat a partial file as complete; restart or verify the download before extracting or playing it. For repeated or large downloads, the command-line tool’s checksum option can help skip files already present and verified, as described in the official tool guidance.
