Yes—YouTube Shorts can be longer than 60 seconds. For standard channels, a video uploaded on or after October 15, 2024 can qualify as a Short if it is three minutes or shorter and has a square or vertical aspect ratio. Upload it through YouTube Studio, the YouTube app, or the YouTube Studio mobile app; you do not need to cut it down to 60 seconds or add #Shorts.
The important distinction is that duration alone is not enough. A three-minute vertical video can be a Short, while a three-minute horizontal video will generally remain a regular YouTube video. YouTube’s current rules are explained in its three-minute Shorts guidance.
How long can a YouTube Short be?
The current maximum for an eligible YouTube Short is three minutes. The upload must also be:

- Square or vertical in shape.
- Uploaded on or after October 15, 2024 for a standard channel.
That means 61-second, 90-second, two-minute, and three-minute videos can qualify, provided they meet the format requirement. A horizontal 16:9 upload is generally treated as long-form, even when it is under three minutes.

Official Artist Channels and channels linked to a music Content Owner have a separate classification date documented by YouTube: December 8, 2025. This can affect how older uploads are classified.
Before uploading: check the video file
Use this checklist before opening YouTube:
- Duration: 3:00 or less. Exporting at 2:59 gives you a small practical margin at the boundary.
- Shape: 9:16 is the usual full-screen format; 1:1 square video is also eligible.
- No unnecessary black bars: Export the actual vertical or square video instead of placing it inside a horizontal canvas.
- Resolution: YouTube’s Shorts creation guidance lists 1080p as the maximum resolution for its stated creation flow.
- Copyright: Confirm that the music, footage, and other material are cleared for use.
There is no single codec, frame rate, bitrate, or editing application that you must use for Shorts eligibility. Duration and aspect ratio are the central checks.
Upload a Short longer than 60 seconds from a computer
This is usually the simplest method for a finished video exported from an editor.

- Click Create in the upper-right corner.
- Select Upload videos.
- Choose your square or vertical video.
- Complete the title, description, audience setting, and other video details.
- Review visibility and monetization settings, where applicable.
- Publish, schedule, or save the upload as a draft.
YouTube’s desktop upload flow supports up to 15 videos at once, but uploading one test video first is sensible if you are unsure how a particular export will be classified. You can set it to private or unlisted while processing and checking its restrictions.

Upload from the YouTube mobile app
Button names can vary slightly between Android, iPhone, and app versions, but the workflow is consistent:
- Open the YouTube app.
- Tap Create.
- Choose Video or Upload a video, depending on the version of the app.
- Select the existing square or vertical video.
- Use the trim editor if necessary.
- Add optional text, filters, or audio.
- Enter the title, privacy setting, and audience designation.
- Tap Upload Short or the equivalent publish control.
If the selected file is longer than three minutes, the mobile flow may let you trim it down. It cannot turn the complete original four-minute or five-minute file into a three-minute Short without cutting away part of it. The mobile upload flow allows titles of up to 100 characters, according to YouTube’s current guidance.

Upload through the YouTube Studio mobile app
The Studio app is useful when your video has already been edited and you want a direct publishing workflow.
- Open the YouTube Studio app.
- Tap Create.
- Choose Upload a video.
- Select the finished square or vertical file.
- Add the title, privacy setting, and audience information.
- Tap Upload Short.
The available labels may change as YouTube updates its apps. Look for the create, upload, video-details, audience, privacy, and publish controls rather than relying on an identical button layout.

Why a 61-second or three-minute video may not appear as a Short
Check these causes in order:
- It is over three minutes. A video at 3:01 or longer must be trimmed for Short eligibility or uploaded as regular long-form content.
- The file is actually horizontal. Inspect the exported dimensions, not just the way the video looks in your editor. A horizontal canvas with a vertical video inside it can be classified as horizontal.
- It was uploaded before the applicable classification date. Older uploads generally retain their original classification. The standard-channel date is October 15, 2024; music-related channel types may follow the separate date noted above.
- The upload is still processing. Classification, copyright checks, and presentation surfaces may not update simultaneously.
- There is a copyright restriction. Inspect the video’s copyright or restrictions notice in YouTube Studio.
- You are confusing classification with distribution. Being a Short does not guarantee immediate placement in the Shorts feed or a particular number of views. Feed recommendations are separate from basic format eligibility.
You do not need to add #Shorts to force classification. YouTube’s current upload instructions do not list the hashtag as a requirement. It may be used as a label, but it will not repair an incorrect aspect ratio or an overlong file.

Copyright and music rules for Shorts over one minute
Copyright is especially important for a Short between one and three minutes. YouTube says an active Content ID claim on a Short longer than one minute can cause the video to be blocked globally, regardless of the claimant’s selected policy. It may become playable after the claim is resolved, removed, or successfully disputed.
A Content ID claim is not automatically a copyright strike. A strike can result from a separate valid copyright removal request. YouTube explains the distinction in its Content ID claims guidance.
Music can enter your video in several ways:
- YouTube Shorts Audio Library: Availability and permitted duration depend on the specific track, territory, and tool. Most songs may be available for up to 90 seconds in a three-minute Short, but some are limited to 60 or 30 seconds.
- YouTube Audio Library: YouTube identifies its royalty-free library as a way to use music that does not receive a Content ID claim, subject to the relevant track terms.
- Music imported from another service or embedded offline: This may trigger a Content ID claim or a takedown request even if the song is available elsewhere.
Do not assume that every song can run for the full three minutes. YouTube’s music eligibility guidance says limits vary by track and upload tool. Some mobile flows may also offer shorter audio clips.

Dispute the claim only when you have a defensible licence or legal basis. After the claim is resolved, check whether the Short becomes playable again.

Should you publish it as a Short or a regular video?
| Choose a Short when… | Choose a regular video when… |

| The content works in a vertical or square composition. | The original composition is horizontal, such as many interviews, slides, and gameplay recordings. |
| The complete idea fits within three minutes. | The subject needs more than three minutes. |
| Shorts-feed discovery is part of your goal. | You want a traditional watch-page presentation or more long-form context. |
| The music and footage are cleared for use. | The material needs a format or licensing approach better suited to long-form publication. |
If you do not want YouTube to classify the upload as a Short, use a wider aspect ratio such as 16:9. If you have horizontal footage, forcing it into 9:16 can crop faces, gameplay, slides, or important demonstrations. In that case, preserving the original frame as a regular video may produce a better result.
What to do if you want exactly three minutes
A file at exactly 3:00 should satisfy the stated duration limit when YouTube receives it as no longer than three minutes. Exporting slightly below the boundary—for example, 2:59—reduces the chance that export metadata or duration rounding makes the file appear longer. This is a practical precaution, not a separate published YouTube requirement.
Monetization considerations
An eligible three-minute Short is not automatically monetized. For standard channels, eligible Shorts uploaded after October 15, 2024 may participate in the Shorts revenue-sharing model only when the channel and video satisfy YouTube Partner Program requirements, applicable monetization modules, content policies, and copyright conditions. A blocked Short cannot earn while it is blocked. See YouTube’s Shorts monetization policies for the requirements.

- Is the video 3:00 or shorter?
- Is the actual file square or vertical?
- Does it avoid unnecessary black bars and horizontal padding?
- Are the music, clips, images, and footage cleared?
- Have you selected the correct audience setting?
- Is the privacy setting correct?
- Have YouTube’s copyright checks finished?
- If classification is uncertain, have you tested the upload as private or unlisted first?
In short, upload the finished file normally through YouTube Studio or the YouTube app. A vertical or square video uploaded under the current three-minute rule does not need to be shortened to 60 seconds, but copyright restrictions and Shorts-feed distribution remain separate issues.
