Yes—you can get HBO Max through DIRECTV. It may already be included with an eligible package, or you may be able to add it through your DIRECTV account. After that, connect the HBO Max app to DIRECTV using your DIRECTV credentials.
The exact benefits depend on whether you have satellite DIRECTV or DIRECTV STREAM, which package you use, and how your account is billed.
Check whether HBO Max is already included
Before purchasing anything, sign in to your DIRECTV account and review your current TV package and premium-channel list. Look for HBO Max, HBO Max Standard, or HBO Max Basic with Ads.
- DIRECTV satellite: PREMIER and LO MAXIMO include HBO Max Standard. Eligible customers on other packages may be able to add HBO Max.
- DIRECTV STREAM: PREMIER and LO MÁXIMO include HBO Max Standard.
- DIRECTV STREAM MyEntertainment Genre Pack: includes HBO Max Basic with Ads.
Basic with Ads availability as a separate add-on varies by package, service type, and billing method. Your account’s package-management screen is the definitive eligibility check. See DIRECTV’s support details and HBO Max’s provider information.

If your package is PREMIER or LO MAXIMO, try connecting the app before ordering a separate subscription.
Add HBO Max through DIRECTV
- Sign in at DIRECTV.com.
- Open My TV package or Manage My TV Package.
- Find the HBO Max option.
- Select Add.
- Review the tier, channels, price, promotional period, and renewal terms.
- Confirm the order.
Labels can differ between the DIRECTV website, app, satellite service, and DIRECTV STREAM. DIRECTV says the subscription is billed through DIRECTV and automatically renews at the prevailing monthly rate.

Connect the HBO Max app to DIRECTV
- Install or open the HBO Max app on your smart TV, streaming device, phone, tablet, or computer.
- Select Sign In.
- Choose Connect Your Provider.
- Select DIRECTV for satellite service or DIRECTV STREAM for streaming service, when that option is offered.
- Enter the DIRECTV User ID and password associated with the active subscription.
- Complete the account-linking prompts. You may be able to use an existing HBO Max account rather than creating another one.
HBO Max’s provider instructions describe this connection process at its provider-login help page. On DIRECTV Gemini devices, the HBO Max app is preloaded; other devices require installation from the device’s app store.

Some DIRECTV support information says HBO Max Standard normally does not require a separate activation step. If you receive Basic with Ads, look for DIRECTV’s activation email, select Activate Now, finish the account-linking process, and then sign in to the app.

HBO Max, formerly branded simply Max, is the app and streaming catalog. The HBO channel in the DIRECTV guide is not a substitute for the complete app catalog. Exclusive HBO Max streaming content requires the app.
Where is HBO on DIRECTV?
HBO-related linear channels appear at or around channel 501, according to DIRECTV support material, although channel placement can vary by lineup. HBO content may also appear in DIRECTV’s on-demand menu if your tier includes that access.
To browse the full HBO Max library—including app-exclusive movies and series—open the HBO Max app and sign in through DIRECTV.

If HBO Max is not working
- Confirm eligibility: Check that the package or add-on is active in your DIRECTV account.
- Allow for provisioning: A newly ordered add-on may not appear immediately.
- Choose the correct provider: Use DIRECTV for satellite service and DIRECTV STREAM for streaming service.
- Use the correct login: Enter the DIRECTV credentials linked to the subscription—not a separate HBO Max, Apple, Google, Roku, Amazon, or old AT&T login unless the current account specifically requests it.
- Reconnect: Sign out of HBO Max, restart the device, update the app, and retry Connect Your Provider.
- Try a computer: Complete the provider connection from the HBO Max login page, then reopen the app.
- Check Basic with Ads activation: Find DIRECTV’s activation email and select Activate Now.
- Check for a trial restriction: DIRECTV says some free-trial customers may not receive HBO Max app, linear-channel, or on-demand access until the trial ends, with exceptions for certain qualifying packages or add-ons.
If DIRECTV does not appear in the provider list, first verify that the benefit is active. If it still does not appear, contact DIRECTV because eligibility and provider activation are controlled by the billing account. HBO Max’s general guidance also recommends searching the provider list when the provider is not immediately visible.
DIRECTV STREAM billing can affect eligibility
DIRECTV STREAM customers who pay through Roku, Amazon, or Google may have different add-on availability. DIRECTV support information indicates that Roku-billed customers may receive HBO Max Standard only through the Signature PREMIER package, while Basic with Ads may not be available as an add-on for some Amazon-, Roku-, or Google-billed accounts. Check the options shown in your own account rather than relying only on the package name.
Can you use an existing HBO Max account?
Usually, yes. Choose the provider-connection option and link DIRECTV to the existing HBO Max account when prompted. Use the same email address if the linking flow requests one, and avoid creating a second HBO Max profile unnecessarily.
If you already pay for HBO Max directly—or through Apple, Google Play, Amazon, Roku, or another billing provider—adding HBO Max through DIRECTV does not automatically cancel that subscription. Identify the original billing provider and cancel the old subscription there if you no longer want two charges.

DIRECTV or a direct HBO Max subscription?
Choose HBO Max through DIRECTV if you want HBO channels in the DIRECTV guide, DIRECTV on-demand HBO programming, app access, and one combined bill. It is especially convenient when HBO Max is already included with PREMIER or LO MAXIMO.
Consider subscribing directly to HBO Max if you only need app streaming, do not need linear HBO channels, or cannot add your preferred tier through DIRECTV. First-party plan information retrieved for direct subscriptions listed price signals of $9.99 per month for Basic with Ads, $16.99 for Standard, and $20.99 for Premium; verify the current price and plan terms at HBO Max checkout, since these are not DIRECTV-billed prices.
There is also an important cancellation trade-off: if HBO Max is billed through DIRECTV, canceling DIRECTV may remove that HBO Max access. A direct HBO Max subscription remains separate, but it will have its own bill and will not provide DIRECTV’s linear-channel integration.

Is HBO Max free with DIRECTV?
It is included only with certain DIRECTV packages, such as PREMIER and LO MAXIMO, or with qualifying promotions. It is not automatically free for every DIRECTV customer.

Is HBO Max included with DIRECTV STREAM?
DIRECTV STREAM PREMIER and LO MÁXIMO include HBO Max Standard. MyEntertainment includes Basic with Ads. Other eligibility depends on the package and billing method.
Can I watch HBO Max on a smart TV?
Yes. Install the HBO Max app on a supported smart TV or streaming device, select Connect Your Provider, and choose the applicable DIRECTV provider.
Why does HBO Max ask me to subscribe?
The add-on may not be active yet, the wrong provider may be selected, the account may use the wrong DIRECTV login, Basic with Ads may still need email activation, or a free-trial restriction may apply.

No. Add-on availability varies by service, package, promotion, and—in the case of DIRECTV STREAM—billing route. Check your account’s available options.
Do I need to cancel my old HBO Max subscription?
Only if you no longer want it. DIRECTV will not automatically cancel a subscription billed through another provider, so cancel it with the original billing provider to prevent duplicate charges.
