Max has been renamed HBO Max again. Warner Bros. Discovery announced the reversal on May 14, 2025, and its current corporate and subscriber-support materials now use HBO Max branding. For most subscribers, this is a rebrand of the existing service—not a new platform or a new subscription. Your account, profiles, settings, programming, plan and billing arrangement should continue, although app stores, devices and billing providers may display the old Max name for a while.
The short version for subscribers
- You generally do not need to create a new account or buy a second subscription.
- The existing app is intended to transition to HBO Max branding; install an available update if necessary.
- The service is still broader than HBO alone. Warner Bros. films, DC, Max Originals, Discovery-related programming, Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, Turner titles and other content remain part of the broader offering.
- Warner Bros. Discovery said the rebrand would not change the app experience, programming, plans, pricing at the time, profiles or settings.
- U.S. prices listed by the official help center are $9.99 per month for Basic with Ads, $16.99 for Standard and $20.99 for Premium. Prices vary by country, billing provider, promotion and tax.
- Check who bills you before changing or cancelling anything. Apple, Google, Amazon, Roku, cable companies and other providers may manage the subscription rather than HBO Max directly.
The name “nobody wanted” is opinion, not an established fact. A more accurate description is that many subscribers and commentators disliked the earlier move away from HBO Max, while Warner Bros. Discovery now believes the HBO name better communicates the service’s value.
What happened to HBO Max and Max?
HBO Max launched as WarnerMedia’s premium streaming service, built around HBO programming and Warner Bros. entertainment. After WarnerMedia and Discovery became Warner Bros. Discovery, the company relaunched the service simply as Max in 2023.

That change was deliberate. Max was meant to signal a broader entertainment destination rather than an HBO-focused product. Warner Bros. Discovery positioned it around HBO, Warner Bros. films, Max Originals, DC, the Wizarding World and Discovery programming. The shorter name was intended to accommodate a larger catalog and a wider audience.

On May 14, 2025, Warner Bros. Discovery announced that Max would become HBO Max again “this summer.” By August 2026, the company’s pressroom and support materials were presenting the service as HBO Max. The exact operational switchover date is less important to current subscribers than the present status: the service is now branded HBO Max again.
Some support URLs, app menus, receipts and provider dashboards may still contain “Max” because corporate systems and third-party platforms do not necessarily update simultaneously.
Why did Warner Bros. Discovery reverse the name?
The company’s stated reason is strategic: HBO is one of its strongest and most recognizable premium brands, and putting HBO back in the name makes the service’s identity clearer. In its announcement, Warner Bros. Discovery pointed to momentum from HBO programming, theatrical Warner Bros. films, documentaries, selected reality programming and originals.
There are also reasonable business explanations, although they should be treated as analysis rather than confirmed company admissions. Restoring HBO may help the service:

- communicate its premium positioning more quickly;
- stand out in a crowded streaming market;
- make the product easier to identify in conversation, searches and device menus;
- appeal to former HBO Max customers who associated HBO with quality and exclusivity;
- clarify why a household should pay for it alongside other entertainment services.
That does not prove the Max name caused subscriber losses or that the 2023 rebrand was a financial failure. Warner Bros. Discovery’s announcement frames the reversal as a forward-looking brand decision, not a formal admission that the previous name was unsuccessful.
Is HBO Max now an HBO-only service?
No. The restored name does not undo the broader product strategy introduced under Max. Current U.S. plan information continues to describe a service that includes HBO alongside Warner Bros. titles, DC, Max Originals, Cartoon Network, Turner programming, Looney Tunes, Adult Swim and other content.
This distinction matters. HBO Max is a brand name; it is not a promise that the catalog has returned to the narrower HBO-centered service that existed before the 2023 Max launch. Availability still differs by country, licensing agreement, plan and platform.
What changed for existing subscribers?
Warner Bros. Discovery’s subscriber FAQ says the app experience, programming, plans, pricing at the time of the change, profiles and settings would remain the same. Existing customers were not instructed to create a new account or take action simply because the brand changed.

That means the rebrand should not be confused with a product reset. It does not automatically fix buffering, login problems, device compatibility, catalog complaints or customer-service issues. A new name also does not guarantee that future prices, plans or content will remain unchanged.
Do you need a new HBO Max app?
The official guidance is that the existing Max app would become HBO Max and that subscribers generally did not need to do anything. In practice, app names and icons can update at different times across televisions, phones, streaming sticks, app stores and provider platforms.
If your device still shows Max:
- Open the device’s official app store and check for an update.
- Restart the device after updating.
- Sign out and back in if the account is not recognised.
- Check Profile > Subscription in the app, or open Settings > Subscription on a television device, to identify the billing provider.
- Reinstall the app only if updating, restarting and signing in again do not resolve the problem.
- Contact the provider that bills you if the subscription is missing or the account cannot be verified.
Do not cancel an existing subscription and immediately start another one merely because the icon or name changed. That can create duplicate billing or cause you to lose a grandfathered price or feature.

Current U.S. plans and prices
The following figures are the U.S. direct-subscription prices shown in the official help center. They are not universal prices: billing providers, bundles, promotions, taxes, legacy plans and countries can differ.

Warner Bros. Discovery describes the annual prices as a 16% saving compared with paying the monthly price for 12 months. That only helps if you expect to keep the service for the year. Select live sports are included with Standard and Premium, but that does not mean every event, league or broadcast is available.
Likewise, Premium does not make every title 4K or Dolby Atmos. Those formats depend on the individual program, device, connection and audio/video setup.

Who manages your subscription?
You may be billed by HBO Max directly or through Apple, Google Play, Amazon Appstore, Roku, Samsung, Xfinity, Cox, Xumo, Prime Video Channels or another partner. The billing route determines where you change plans, cancel, update payment information or resolve a failed charge.

Before making a change, identify the provider in the app’s subscription section or by checking your bank or app-store receipt. Provider billing can be useful when you want one consolidated bill or already receive HBO Max in a bundle, but it can also offer fewer plan controls and a less direct cancellation process.
Does bringing back HBO fix the original problem?
It fixes one problem: the brand once again communicates a clear connection to HBO’s premium programming. That may make the service easier for former HBO Max customers to recognise and may strengthen its positioning against more generic streaming brands.
It does not, by itself, solve every concern associated with the earlier rebrand. It does not guarantee lower prices, better app performance, a larger catalog, fewer licensing restrictions or a simpler corporate strategy. Repeatedly renaming a service can also create its own trust problem, particularly when subscribers have to work out whether a new logo represents a new product, a new bill or merely a new label.
