Yes—the October 7, 2025 report was substantially accurate. Apple and Formula 1 announced a five-year exclusive U.S. broadcast partnership on October 17, 2025, during the United States Grand Prix weekend. Apple TV became the official U.S. home of Formula 1 beginning with the 2026 season, replacing ESPN.
What the October 7 report claimed
On October 7, 2025, Puck reporter John Ourand reported, via 9to5Mac’s account, that Apple and Formula 1 were close to finalizing a U.S. streaming-rights agreement. The expected announcement window was the upcoming United States Grand Prix in Austin, scheduled for October 17–19.
The report also identified the main complication: Apple reportedly wanted an exclusive arrangement, while Formula 1 already operated its direct-to-consumer F1 TV service in the United States. The report further said Apple would pay upwards of $150 million per year. That figure was not disclosed in Apple’s official announcement; later reporting described the deal as worth approximately $150 million annually.
Apple and F1 did announce the deal
The announcement arrived on October 17, 2025—during the Austin race weekend rather than before it. Apple and Formula 1 confirmed a five-year partnership making Apple TV the exclusive U.S. broadcaster for Formula 1 beginning in 2026.

Formula 1 confirmed the same arrangement in its official announcement. This is best described both as a streaming deal, because viewers receive the coverage through an app and website, and as an exclusive U.S. broadcast partnership, which is the more precise official wording.
The agreement applies to the United States only. Apple did not buy Formula 1, acquire its global media rights, or become the broadcaster everywhere in the world.

Apple’s 2026 launch coverage also describes wider Formula 1 integration through Apple News, Apple Maps and Apple Music, alongside personalized editorial coverage, race-related live blogs and highlights. These additions are separate from the core question of live race access, but they show that Apple is treating F1 as an integrated sports property rather than simply placing a video feed inside an existing app.
What happened to ESPN?
ESPN retained Formula 1 rights through the end of the 2025 season. It was not removed midway through the 2025 campaign. Starting with the 2026 season, Apple replaced ESPN as the exclusive U.S. broadcaster.

That means an ESPN subscription or a traditional television package that included ESPN no longer supplies the 2026 U.S. F1 broadcast package. Fans who watched through ESPN had to move to Apple’s service for live championship coverage.
Is Apple TV the same as Apple TV+?
The names are easy to confuse. Apple previously branded its streaming service as Apple TV+, but the service was renamed Apple TV in October 2025. The official F1 announcement and Apple’s current viewing page use “Apple TV.”
Apple TV is the streaming service; the Apple TV app is the software used to access it; and Apple TV 4K or Apple TV HD are optional hardware devices. You do not need an Apple TV box to watch F1.
What happened to F1 TV in the United States?
The original report’s question about F1 TV was real, but the final result should not be summarized as “F1 TV disappeared.” The important change is that Apple TV became the U.S. home for live F1 championship coverage.
F1 TV continued as a broader Formula 1 product in international markets and remained relevant for archives, historical material, documentaries, original programs and other features, depending on territory and account type. Formula 1 also continued to support other U.S. programming, including a free, ad-supported Formula 1 Channel.

These categories should not be treated as interchangeable:
- Live U.S. championship sessions: practice, qualifying, Sprint sessions and Grands Prix moved to Apple TV.
- Archives and historical content: access can differ from live-rights access.
- F1 documentaries and original programs: availability depends on the service and territory.
- Telemetry, timing and alternate features: do not assume that every former F1 TV feature is replicated in Apple TV.
- Free Formula 1 Channel: useful for selected programming, but not a replacement for the live U.S. Grand Prix package.
How U.S. fans watch F1 in 2026
Apple’s official Where to Watch Formula 1 page lists access through the Apple TV app on:
- iPhone and iPad
- Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD
- Mac
- Compatible smart TVs
- Streaming devices and set-top boxes
- Game consoles
- Eligible Android mobile devices
- The web at tv.apple.com
Apple’s current page lists iOS 26.2 or later and tvOS 26.2 or later for the current service experience. App support and software requirements can change, so viewers should check Apple’s live compatibility page before upgrading hardware or troubleshooting access.
Installing the Apple TV app is not the same as having an active subscription with F1 access. Availability can also depend on the account’s country or region and the viewer’s location.
How much did the rights deal cost?
The deal was reported to be worth roughly $150 million per year. The October 7 report said Apple would pay more than $150 million annually, while Associated Press reporting later described the five-year agreement as averaging approximately $150 million per year.

Apple and Formula 1 officially confirmed the five-year term, but their announcements did not disclose a full contract value. The reported rights fee should therefore not be presented as an official financial disclosure or converted into a confirmed $750 million total.
That industry figure is also separate from the consumer price of an Apple TV subscription. The supplied official announcements confirm the rights arrangement and viewing platform, but not a reliable current consumer price. Check Apple’s current signup flow before relying on any quoted subscription amount.
Why Apple wanted Formula 1
Apple already had a growing sports portfolio, including MLS Season Pass and MLB Friday Night Baseball. It also had a major commercial relationship with Formula 1 through F1 The Movie. In its announcement, Apple connected the partnership to the film’s success and described the deal as part of a deeper relationship with Formula 1.
Exclusive sports rights can help a streaming service attract and retain subscribers, increase engagement and strengthen connections among its content, devices and services. Those are reasonable strategic interpretations, not confirmed statements that Apple’s only objective was subscriber growth.

Potential advantages

“Can I keep watching live races with my existing F1 TV subscription?”
Do not assume that an existing U.S. F1 TV subscription remains equivalent to the Apple TV package. U.S. live championship rights moved to Apple TV, while F1 TV continued as a broader product with availability and features that vary by territory and account.
“Can I watch without Apple hardware?”
Yes. Apple lists compatible smart TVs, streaming devices, game consoles, eligible Android devices and web access in addition to iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple TV hardware.
“Does the free Formula 1 Channel replace Apple TV?”
