An unidentified woman outside a New York courthouse in September 2025 told reporters she was “married” to an AI chatbot modeled on Luigi Mangione. She said they spoke every day and had discussed a future together. The reports document her claim—not a legal marriage, a relationship with Mangione himself, or even which chatbot she used.
What the woman said
The encounter took place amid a crowd outside a Manhattan courthouse during a hearing involving Mangione, a criminal defendant accused in the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Reports described the woman as a Mangione supporter wearing clothing featuring his image; the crowd also included people displaying pro-Mangione messages and others in themed clothing. That setting is context for the interview, not evidence that she represented Mangione, his defense team, or any official organization.
According to Vice’s report and Futurism’s coverage, she described the chatbot as supportive, said it “fought” her battles, and called it her best friend. She also reportedly said they had discussed a shared future and possible children’s names. These are remarks attributed to her; reporting does not independently verify what the bot said or how the conversations worked.

The woman was not identified in the coverage reviewed. The reports appear to draw on an interview or video outside the courthouse and reporting by the New York Post. Without a complete, independently available transcript or fuller context, it is not possible to determine whether her remarks were wholly sincere, partly performative, ironic, or some combination.

“Married” is her description, not a documented legal status
Nothing in the available reporting establishes a marriage license, legal ceremony, or government-recognized marriage involving the woman and an AI system. Her use of “married” should therefore be understood as a personal description of the relationship, not a legal finding.
- Legal marriage is a status recognized under applicable law between legal parties.
- Symbolic commitment may be personally meaningful without creating legal rights or duties.
- AI companionship describes an emotional bond a person may feel with a conversational system.
- Role-play involves interacting with a persona, whether or not the user experiences the exchange as emotionally significant.
The brief public account does not establish which of these best captures her experience. Nor does it show that Mangione himself was involved in, aware of, or represented by the conversations. The distinction matters: “a woman says she is married to an AI version of Mangione” is not the same claim as “Mangione married someone.”

What was the AI version?
The reports do not identify the platform, model, creator, or technical setup. “AI version” could refer to a general chatbot prompted to role-play, a custom character in a public directory, or a more elaborate persona using text, an avatar, or synthetic voice. The available coverage does not say whether any of those features were present.

There is no reported evidence that Mangione consented to the creation or use of such a persona. It would be inaccurate to name a product or describe the bot as an exact simulation.
Why this story drew attention
The incident sits at the intersection of AI companionship, fandom, and the use of a real person’s identity. A chatbot can generate intimate, responsive language in a persona a user recognizes, but that does not make the persona the person it resembles. Depending on how it is made, a real-person simulation can raise questions about consent, reputation, impersonation, likeness, and platform moderation. The reports do not establish that this particular chatbot led to a complaint, lawsuit, takedown, or legal ruling.
The courthouse setting also matters. Mangione’s case has drawn intense public attention and visible supporters, but one person’s statement should not be treated as representative of all supporters. The criminal case is separate from the claim about an AI relationship; Mangione remains an accused defendant, not someone whose guilt should be presumed from this anecdote.

A short interview outside a courthouse cannot establish a person’s mental-health status or explain how literally they understand an AI relationship. The available reports do not say whether the woman was joking, performing for cameras, distressed, or impaired, and they offer no basis for diagnosing her. Emotional attachment to a chatbot, by itself, does not prove that someone has lost touch with reality.
The most careful conclusion is limited but meaningful: in September 2025, a woman publicly described a daily, emotionally significant relationship with a chatbot she called an AI version of Luigi Mangione. The available reports do not establish the bot’s provenance, Mangione’s involvement or consent, or any legal marriage. The story illustrates how AI role-play can blur the boundaries between fandom, synthetic identity, and companionship without answering what this particular relationship meant to the person describing it.
