The underlying remark is real; “copyright holders are begging” is a sensationalized version of it. On an October 8, 2025 podcast, Sam Altman said OpenAI had heard from rights holders concerned about unauthorized uses of their characters—and from others worried their characters would not appear in Sora often enough. He named no companies or supplied evidence of how widespread that second view was. A later proposed Disney licensing deal showed that at least one major rights holder was open to controlled use. OpenAI says Sora was discontinued on April 26, 2026.
What Altman said
Altman made the comment on an a16z podcast published October 8, 2025. He described two kinds of responses from rights holders: some were concerned about uses of their characters, while others, he said, were concerned that the characters would not appear in Sora “enough.”
His point was that some owners might want a middle ground: let audiences interact with familiar characters, but impose restrictions on what those characters can say or do. In that scenario, a rights holder might object to a character being underrepresented rather than overused.

Why the “begging” headline needs a caveat
The word “begging” goes beyond the evidence in the interview. Altman said “a lot” of rights holders had raised concerns, but did not say how many wanted greater inclusion, who they were, or what “a lot” meant. The public remarks therefore support a narrower description: Altman said some rights holders wanted authorized, controlled visibility for their characters.
Several distinctions matter:
- A character appearing in a generated video is not evidence of permission. Users’ ability to prompt for a character does not establish that its owner licensed the use.
- Wanting licensed use does not mean approving unlicensed use. A studio could seek a controlled arrangement while objecting to uncontrolled generations elsewhere.
- “Rights holder” can mean different parties. A franchise may involve studios, publishers, creators, trademark owners, distributors, licensees, talent, or estates, with different rights and interests.
- A licensing arrangement may be limited. Approval for particular characters or formats does not automatically include actors’ faces or voices, every story context, or all commercial uses.
The timing: Sora 2 and the launch backlash
OpenAI launched Sora 2 on September 30, 2025, describing it as a video-generation model that could also produce synchronized audio. Soon after launch, users circulated videos featuring recognizable copyrighted characters, including examples involving SpongeBob and Pikachu, amid questions about authorization and requests for stronger controls. Contemporary coverage reported the disputes; Futurism’s October 8 story framed Altman’s remark in that context.

That timing made his comment sound like a rebuttal to the idea that entertainment companies uniformly opposed Sora. But it did not settle the dispute. A company can see promotional or audience-engagement value in fan interaction and still worry about unauthorized use, harmful portrayals, brand confusion, or lost control of its characters.
What OpenAI’s safeguards did—and did not—address
In its September 30, 2025 safety materials, OpenAI described visible watermarks and invisible provenance signals, including C2PA metadata; content moderation; and takedown mechanisms for creators who believed outputs infringed their work. It also described consent-based “characters” for a person’s image and voice likeness, with controls for access and revocation, as well as additional safeguards for character-based videos.

Those measures address different problems, and none amounts to blanket copyright clearance. Provenance can help identify where media came from; moderation can reduce some harmful outputs; takedowns give people a way to report concerns. None, by itself, proves that a fictional character in a generated clip was licensed or resolves whether a particular output infringes copyright, trademark, publicity, contractual, or other rights.
Consent to use a real person’s likeness is also distinct from permission to use a studio-owned fictional character. The rights, stakeholders, and limits may differ. Even a fictional-character license may need rules about dialogue, story context, violence, sexuality, politics, brand safety, attribution, or commercial use.

What the later Disney announcement shows
On December 11, 2025, OpenAI announced a proposed three-year agreement with Disney covering more than 200 characters from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars. The company said users would be able to create short, prompt-driven videos with those characters, and that selected fan-inspired videos might be distributed on Disney+. The announcement also described Disney as an OpenAI customer and included a planned $1 billion Disney investment in OpenAI.
Crucially, OpenAI’s announcement said the transaction remained subject to definitive agreements, approvals, and closing conditions. It also said the arrangement would not include talent likenesses or voices. The announcement is concrete evidence that at least one major rights holder pursued a formal Sora licensing path; it is not evidence that every studio wanted the same deal, that all of Disney’s characters were covered, or that every announced feature went live on the stated terms. Where things stand now
Altman’s remark concerned Sora 2 during its 2025 launch. OpenAI’s current Sora materials say the Sora product was no longer available as of April 26, 2026. The quote is therefore a historical snapshot of a debate about how generative-video services might handle character rights—not current guidance for a working Sora service.
