Its distinguishing feature is the pilot Sunshine Programme: eligible users collect virtual Sunshine through referrals and interactions with charity content, then assign that balance to participating charities. TikTok says it converts the virtual balance into donations.
The important limitation is transparency. TikTok has not publicly disclosed the cash value of one Sunshine, a user-level cap, the programme’s total budget, or a settlement schedule. Sunshine should therefore be understood as an engagement-based charity mechanism—not as cash that users earn or a fixed donation attached to every like.

What exactly is TikTok Pro?
TikTok Pro is a standalone app launched in Europe on July 30, 2025. It is not the “professional” version of a TikTok account, nor is it the same as TikTok’s creator, business, or TikTok Shop tools.
TikTok presents Pro as a more focused short-video service built around entertaining, educational, useful and STEM-related content. The German Apple App Store listing describes the app as having no e-commerce experience and limited access to some features associated with the main platform. Independent coverage has also characterized it as a narrower version of TikTok, with reduced or absent shopping, advertising and livestream functionality. Those details may change as the app is updated, so users should check the current store listing in their country.

TikTok says Pro retains the main app’s content controls, privacy and safety tools, and wellbeing features. That is a company description of the available tools; it does not independently establish that the two apps have identical recommendation systems, moderation outcomes or data practices.
The product’s other defining feature is Sunshine, the built-in charity pilot announced alongside the app.
How the Sunshine Programme works
The basic process described by TikTok is:
- Download and join TikTok Pro.
- Invite other people to join.
- Interact with content from participating charities.
- Accumulate virtual Sunshine through eligible activities.
- Assign the Sunshine to a participating organization.
- TikTok converts the allocated virtual balance into a donation, according to its description of the programme.
Eligible interactions can include liking charity videos, reposting them, following charity-related accounts and searching for charity-related content. TikTok also says that referral activity can generate Sunshine.
That makes Sunshine both a charity-awareness feature and a user-acquisition mechanism. The programme does not merely ask users to watch nonprofit videos: it also encourages them to bring new users into TikTok Pro.

Sunshine is not money in your account
Users do not appear to receive cash, withdraw Sunshine or transfer their own money to a charity. Sunshine is a virtual in-app balance. The published TikTok announcements say the company converts it into donations, but they do not provide the information needed to calculate the financial impact of a particular action.

- the cash value of one Sunshine;
- whether every like, repost, follow or search earns the same amount;
- the maximum Sunshine or donation attributable to one user;
- the programme’s total donation budget or whether it operates from a fixed pool;
- how funds are divided if users support different charities;
- when participating organizations receive payments; or
- whether an independent auditor verifies the conversion.
As a result, it is not accurate to say that “each like donates” a known amount. The most precise description is that users generate virtual activity credit, direct it to selected partners, and TikTok says it turns that allocation into donations.
Where is TikTok Pro available?
The documented rollout is limited to three European countries:

- Germany: available at the initial launch.
- Portugal: available at the initial launch.
- Spain: announced as a later rollout and reported by TikTok as available by March 2026.
This is not evidence of a Europe-wide or European Union-wide launch. App Store and Google Play availability can also vary by country, device and date. The original TikTok announcement and later Spanish update are the relevant sources for the documented rollout.
Sunshine eligibility is a separate question from access to the app. TikTok says users must confirm that they are at least 18 years old to participate in the programme. A store’s general age rating does not automatically mean that a minor can use Sunshine.

The choice is therefore not simply between two names for the same app. TikTok Pro is potentially attractive to people who want a less commerce-oriented viewing experience and the opportunity to support selected charities through engagement. It is a poor substitute for users who rely on shopping, livestreams or the full TikTok feature set.

- NABU, Germany’s Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union.
In March 2026, TikTok announced additional partners including the UN World Food Programme and Tierschutzverein für Berlin. The partner list is a dated snapshot, not a permanent or universal charity directory. A nonprofit that is not selected by TikTok cannot necessarily receive Sunshine through the programme.
Why did TikTok create a separate app?
TikTok’s stated purpose is to let users discover short-form content while supporting charitable organizations. The separate app also provides a more controlled product environment, with a narrower feature set and no e-commerce according to its store description.
Several broader interpretations are possible, but they should remain interpretations rather than established motives. Pro may let TikTok test a less commercial product, build a more socially beneficial brand narrative, attract new users through referrals, and offer nonprofit partners additional exposure. The app’s charity positioning may also appeal to European users and policymakers concerned about platform safety and wellbeing. The available sources do not prove that regulatory pressure was the specific reason for its creation.

Referral credit may have conditions
TikTok describes referrals as one route to Sunshine, but the cited announcements do not explain every eligibility condition. A referral may fail to register if the invited person has already installed the app or does not complete the required steps. Users should not assume that sending an invitation automatically creates credit.

Activities are limited
TikTok says the activities used to accumulate Sunshine are limited. Continuous scrolling should not be treated as an unlimited earning system, and the presence of a charity video does not establish that every interaction produces the same reward.
The app may not show the expected features immediately
Country availability, age confirmation, account status and app updates can affect whether Sunshine appears. If the app is missing from a local store, or the programme does not appear after installation, the safest explanation may simply be that the relevant rollout or eligibility condition does not apply. The cited material does not provide a universal referral-recovery or troubleshooting procedure.

Is TikTok Pro worth downloading?
For ordinary users
It may be worth trying if you live in Germany, Portugal or Spain, are at least 18 for Sunshine, want short videos in a less commerce-oriented environment, and are comfortable with TikTok’s account and privacy ecosystem.
It is less suitable if you need livestreams, shopping or the full TikTok feature set; want to support any charity of your choice; do not want another app; or expect a transparent fixed donation for each interaction.
For donors
Sunshine can be a low-friction way to discover and amplify participating organizations. It should not replace a direct donation when you need to know exactly how much money is contributed, receive a donation receipt, set up recurring giving or choose an organization outside TikTok’s partner list. Direct donation information is generally available through the charities’ own websites.
For charities
The programme may provide reach, discovery and engagement, but participation depends on TikTok’s selection of partners. The lack of a published conversion rate, donation cap, settlement timetable and independent impact figures makes it difficult to compare Sunshine with conventional fundraising channels.
What remains unproven
TikTok’s announcements establish that Pro launched, that Sunshine exists, that selected users can earn virtual credit through specified activities, and that TikTok says it converts allocated Sunshine into donations. They do not establish the programme’s total financial impact, cost per engagement, user-level monetary value or independent effectiveness.
That is a transparency limitation, not proof that the programme is ineffective. It simply means readers should separate TikTok’s description of the mechanism from independently measurable evidence of how much money charities receive.
