Yes—Dexter apparently made it all the way home. In February 2022, the Kansas dog escaped a pet boarding facility in Lenexa, traveled roughly two miles, and appeared at his family’s front door. His owners were about 1,000 miles away in Las Vegas when their Ring video doorbell alerted them to his arrival.
The doorbell did not track Dexter during his journey. It detected him after he reached the house and gave Jeremy and Sarah Henson a way to see and speak to him remotely while a representative from the boarding facility came to retrieve him.
Dexter’s escape began while his family was on vacation
Jeremy and Sarah Henson had left their dog Dexter at a local pet-care facility in Lenexa, Kansas, while they traveled to Las Vegas. Dexter was expected to stay there for five days as part of the couple’s week-long trip.
On about the third day, the Hensons received an unexpected alert from the Ring video doorbell at their empty home. When they opened the camera view, Dexter was outside, pawing or scratching at the front door and trying to get inside.

Reports describe the facility as a pet hotel, kennel, boarding facility, or doggy daycare. “Boarding facility” is the most precise general description because the available accounts use several different terms and do not establish the facility’s official classification.
A two-mile journey that reportedly took about 90 minutes
According to contemporary local and syndicated reports, Dexter had escaped by getting over a fence described as approximately six feet high. The facility was about two miles from the Henson home.
The trip reportedly took roughly 90 minutes. One account described an approximate route involving 87th Street, Rose Hill, and nearby residential roads, but that route comes from secondary reporting and should not be treated as an independently verified map of Dexter’s movements.
What is clear is the outcome: after leaving the boarding facility, Dexter reached the neighborhood where he lived and made it to his own front porch.
How did Dexter know where to go?
The Hensons believed Dexter’s familiarity with the area helped him. Jeremy said the dog regularly went on long walks and had previously passed near the boarding facility. That makes local familiarity a plausible explanation for the journey.

It does not prove that Dexter formed a human-like plan, understood that his owners were away on vacation, or followed a precise mental road map. The reports document where he was found and what his owners believed may have helped him—not the exact cognitive process behind his return.
Dogs can learn routes, recognize environmental cues, follow scents, and use familiar landmarks. But there is no evidence in the available coverage that Dexter consciously understood the trip in the way a person would. The safest description is that he apparently navigated back through a familiar area.
The doorbell camera became the family’s only way to respond
The Hensons were in Las Vegas, approximately 1,000 miles away. Once the doorbell alert arrived, Jeremy used the device’s speaker to talk to Dexter and help keep him calm.

The Ring device did not provide GPS data, show Dexter’s route, or locate him during the 90-minute journey. It alerted the owners only when he reached the porch. Its useful functions in this incident were:
- Motion detection and notification: the Hensons learned that something was at the door despite being away.
- Live video: they could see that the animal outside was Dexter.
- Two-way talk: Jeremy could speak through the doorbell and respond to him remotely.
For readers considering a video doorbell with two-way talk, this is the realistic lesson: a doorbell camera can provide remote awareness and communication at a known location. It is not a substitute for a GPS pet tracker or an active search.

A representative retrieved Dexter from the house
After seeing Dexter at the front door, the Hensons contacted the pet-care provider. A representative came to the home and retrieved him. Reports say Dexter went readily to the vehicle.
The Hensons did not publicly identify the facility in the coverage reviewed, and one syndicated account says they believed the staff had done their best rather than pursuing legal action. The reporting focuses on Dexter’s surprising return, not on a verified finding about how the fence was breached or whether the facility violated a specific standard.
Why the approaching snowstorm made the situation urgent
The escape occurred as a snowstorm was approaching the Kansas City area. Contemporary coverage referred to whiteout conditions and more than a foot of snow in the broader forecast context.
That weather increased the urgency of getting Dexter inside, but the reports do not establish that he traveled through the worst of the storm or provide exact weather conditions along his route. It is therefore more accurate to say that severe weather was threatening the area—not that Dexter’s entire journey took place in a blizzard.
Funny ending, serious risks
The image of a dog arriving home and apparently asking to be let in is easy to treat as a comedy. Jeremy described Dexter as intelligent and protective, while also suggesting that his intelligence sometimes got him into trouble.

But an escaped dog faces serious hazards even when it knows the neighborhood. Those include traffic, freezing or stormy weather, unfamiliar animals, contaminated water, disease exposure, accidental confinement, and people who do not know where the dog belongs. A safe return does not make an unsupervised escape safe.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat Dexter’s story teaches about pet recovery
A doorbell camera can tell you that a dog has reached home. It cannot tell you where the dog is before that point. A layered recovery plan is more dependable:
- Keep a readable ID tag on a properly fitted collar. A passerby can often call the owner immediately without special equipment. A custom dog ID tag and durable collar are simple, visible safeguards.
- Register the microchip and update it. A microchip is not a GPS tracker. It stores an identification number that a shelter or veterinarian can scan and use to contact the registered owner. It works only when the chip is registered and the owner’s contact details are current.
- Consider GPS for dogs with a history of escaping. A GPS dog tracker or GPS dog collar can help locate a roaming pet, subject to the device’s coverage, battery life, fit, and service requirements. No tracker is documented as having been used in Dexter’s case.
- Inspect containment before boarding or leaving a dog outdoors. Check fence height, gates, latches, climbable objects, digging opportunities, and the facility’s procedures for supervision and escape response.
- Ask boarding facilities specific questions. Find out how dogs are separated, how often outdoor areas are checked, what prevents climbing or digging, how staff contact owners during an escape, and which emergency contacts are authorized to act.
- Use secure walking equipment when appropriate. For dogs that slip collars or repeatedly pull free, owners may investigate a properly fitted secure or escape-resistant harness. Equipment must be fitted to the individual dog; no harness guarantees containment.
These measures are general precautions, not claims about what Dexter wore, what identification he had, or what equipment might have prevented his escape.

Dexter’s trip is memorable because it combines an apparent two-mile homeward journey with a perfectly timed doorbell alert. The Ring camera allowed his owners to discover him, see that he was safe enough to wait at the door, and speak to him from another state.
But the camera was the final link in the chain, not the technology that guided him home. Dexter apparently found his way back on his own; the doorbell simply let his family know he had arrived.

Frequently Asked Questions
Did Dexter really ring his own doorbell?
Reports show Dexter pawing or scratching at the front door and triggering or appearing to ring the Ring doorbell. The exact physical mechanism is not independently established, so it is more careful to say that he activated the doorbell alert rather than that he deliberately pressed the button.
Did the Ring doorbell track Dexter’s journey?
No. The available reporting supports only that the doorbell detected Dexter at the house and allowed two-way communication. It did not provide GPS tracking during his trip from the boarding facility.
How far did Dexter travel?
The pet-care facility was reported to be approximately two miles from the Henson home, and the journey reportedly took about 90 minutes.
Is a microchip the same as a GPS tracker?
No. A microchip is a scannable identification number used by shelters and veterinarians to connect a found pet with its owner. A GPS tracker is a wearable device intended to provide location information, usually subject to battery, network, and service limitations.

The Bottom Line
Dexter was not tracked home by his doorbell. He apparently navigated back to his Lenexa house after escaping a boarding facility, and the Ring camera alerted his owners once he reached the porch. The happy ending is a reminder to combine visible ID, a registered microchip, appropriate containment, and—when warranted—a GPS tracker.
