What’s Next for Netflix and Streaming Itself at Disrupt 2025

At Disrupt 2025, Netflix outlined a move beyond passive on-demand viewing. Real-time voting, phone-controlled TV games, vertical Clips, live programming, and personalized discovery point to a more participatory streaming service—without proving that Netflix is becoming TikTok or a game console.

What’s next for Netflix and streaming itself at Disrupt 2025 is a more active Netflix service: live programming, real-time voting, TV party games controlled by phones, personalized and immersive discovery, and vertical short-form video. By August 13, 2026, Netflix had documented follow-through on voting, TV games, phone controls, and its mobile Clips feed.

The title refers to a TechCrunch Disrupt 2025 conversation with Elizabeth Stone, then Netflix’s chief technology officer. The discussion pointed toward a service where members can watch, vote, play, discover, save, share, and participate—not simply select a finished film or episode from a catalog.

Key takeaways

  • Netflix documented real-time voting for selected live events in January 2026; viewers can vote with a TV remote or the Netflix mobile app, while browser voting is not supported and each profile gets one vote.
  • Netflix’s TV party-game slate includes LEGO Party!, Pictionary: Game Night, Boggle Party, Tetris Time Warp, and Party Crashers: Fool Your Friends, with a phone or tablet acting as the controller.
  • Netflix introduced Clips on mobile in April 2026 as a vertical feed of short excerpts that can lead viewers to watch, save, or share a Netflix title.
  • According to Netflix (2025), the service had more than 300 million paid memberships in more than 190 countries, giving experiments in live events, games, and discovery a very large potential audience.
  • Netflix reported more than 94 million global monthly active users for its ad-supported plan in 2025 and more than 250 million global monthly active viewers reached with ads in 2026; Netflix cautioned that the two measurements are not directly comparable.
  • No published evidence in the researched sources proves that the Disrupt 2025 announcements caused a specific increase in Netflix viewing, retention, revenue, or membership.

What did Netflix reveal at Disrupt 2025?

Netflix revealed a product direction focused on making streaming more participatory rather than merely expanding an on-demand catalog. Elizabeth Stone, then Netflix’s chief technology officer, discussed live audience voting, TV-based party games, phone-connected entertainment, vertical short-form discovery, personalization, and more immersive experiences.

The title refers to a TechCrunch Disrupt 2025 Disrupt Stage fireside chat, not to a separate Netflix product called “Disrupt.” TechCrunch announced the Elizabeth Stone session on September 22, 2025. The conference took place October 27–29, 2025, at Moscone West in San Francisco.

The conversation was best understood as a strategy-and-product discussion. Stone was addressing how a mainstream streaming service might compete for attention while viewers divide their time among subscription video, live programming, games, mobile short video, and social platforms. Netflix’s direction was not simply “become TikTok” or “become a game console.” The broader goal was an active entertainment environment where members can watch, vote, play, discover, save, share, and participate.

Can you vote on Netflix live shows?

Yes, but real-time voting is available only during selected Netflix live events, not across every live program or every Netflix title. Netflix says TV viewers can vote with the remote, mobile viewers can tap in the Netflix app, browser voting is unavailable, and each profile receives one vote.

At Disrupt, Stone used a competition such as Star Search to explain the idea: a viewer watching live could influence which contestants advance instead of merely watching a completed result. The Star Search example described the strategic use case; it should not be treated as proof that every edition or territory has the feature.

“If you’re sitting at home watching ‘Star Search’ on your TV, you’ll be able to either on the TV or your mobile phone actually put in a vote that advances or doesn’t advance some of the contestants on the show.” — Elizabeth Stone, Netflix CTO, in event reporting on Netflix’s interactive real-time voting plan

Netflix later documented the feature in its official announcement, explaining that voting works during selected live events. A viewer on a television or streaming device can use the remote, while a viewer using the Netflix mobile app can tap the screen. Netflix says voting is not available in a web browser, and one profile can submit one vote. Netflix first tested an early version of the experience on Dinner Time Live with David Chang.

Where the viewer watches How voting works Important limit
TV or streaming device Use the television remote during the voting window. Voting appears only for selected live events.
Netflix mobile app Tap the screen to submit a vote. One vote is allowed per profile.
Web browser No voting method is documented. Netflix says browser voting is not available.

Real-time voting changes the economics of attention more than ordinary on-demand viewing does. A viewer who wants to affect an outcome has a reason to be present at a particular time, follow the voting window, and remain engaged until the result. That creates appointment viewing and simultaneous participation, although the researched sources do not establish whether voting increases retention, viewing hours, or revenue.

How does Netflix TV gaming work?

Netflix TV gaming uses the television as the shared display and a phone or tablet as the controller, allowing a group to play without buying a dedicated console controller for the documented setup.

Netflix announced its TV party-game slate on October 9, 2025. The announced titles were LEGO Party!, Pictionary: Game Night, Boggle Party, Tetris Time Warp, and Party Crashers: Fool Your Friends. The experience requires Netflix on the viewing screen and a phone, with the phone functioning as the controller. Netflix’s party-game announcement describes the slate and phone-controlled setup.

The living-room strategy is distinct from Netflix’s mobile game catalog. Netflix has also included mobile games with membership, but TV party games are designed to make the existing television screen a shared play surface. Opening Netflix can therefore lead to a group activity rather than only a film or series.

Netflix gaming mode Primary screen Control method described in the research Best understood as
TV party games Television Phone or tablet connected as the controller. A low-friction group activity in the living room.
Mobile game catalog Phone or tablet A mobile gaming experience included with Netflix membership. A separate game category that extends Netflix beyond video.

Netflix Help Center documentation confirms the phone-or-tablet controller model and explains that the mobile device may connect to a TV or computer. The same documentation says physical gamepads and other controllers were not supported in the documented setup. A phone is therefore not just a convenient accessory; for the specified TV experience, the phone is the intended input device.

Availability is not universal. Netflix’s June 4, 2026 announcement for FIFA World Cup: Launch Edition described TV games in 20 countries at that time, with additional rollout planned. That is a dated availability statement, not a permanent worldwide total. A viewer should check the current Netflix app, country, device, and title availability before assuming a particular TV game will work.

Hardware reality check: what streaming device works with Netflix?

A supported device is a prerequisite for Netflix’s television experience, but Netflix compatibility alone does not guarantee access to every live, voting, Clips, or gaming feature. Netflix’s supported-device documentation lists device families including Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick, Apple TV, Chromecast, and Roku TV and Stick.

If you are shopping for a Netflix-compatible streaming device, check the exact model, country availability, operating-system and Netflix app requirements, subscription-plan restrictions, and whether the feature you want is supported on that device. A device that plays ordinary Netflix films may not automatically support a particular TV game or live-interaction feature.

Is Netflix becoming like TikTok?

Netflix is adopting a vertical, swipeable discovery format, but the available evidence does not show that Netflix is replacing TikTok or building an identical social-video service.

At Disrupt, Stone described short-form vertical video as a more “snackable” way for members to discover entertainment while distinguishing Netflix’s direction from simply copying or chasing TikTok. Netflix later made the plan concrete. On April 30, 2026, Netflix introduced Clips, a mobile vertical feed containing short excerpts from series, films, and specials.

Clips is designed to move a viewer toward Netflix’s main catalog. Netflix says members can use the feed to discover something to watch or play, add a title to My List, and share a recommendation through text or social media. Netflix also said it planned to expand Clips to podcasts, live programming, and interest-based collections. Netflix’s mobile announcement describes Clips as a vertical discovery feed tied to its entertainment catalog.

“Mobile is an important part of how Netflix members stay connected to the entertainment they love. With our enhanced navigation and Clips, our new vertical video feed, we’re building on past learnings to deliver an experience designed for the way members want to enjoy Netflix on their phones: for the moments in between, to discover a new title, or a quick laugh. Our vision is to make our mobile experience as entertaining as what you watch, delivering increasingly personalized, immersive experiences for any mood or moment. This is just the beginning.” — Elizabeth Stone, Netflix Chief Product and Technology Officer

The most useful distinction is the job Netflix assigns to short video. The following comparison is editorial analysis of the documented product direction, not a company-published comparison between Netflix and TikTok.

Question Netflix’s documented direction TikTok-like short-video model
What is the primary job? Help a member decide what to watch or play next. Keep a viewer in an ongoing short-video feed.
Where does the content lead? Back to Netflix titles, franchises, and fandom. Short videos are often the destination themselves.
What does sharing do? Share recommendations and moments through text or social media. Social distribution, creator interaction, and feed participation are central.
What is the strategic role? A mobile discovery layer around Netflix’s entertainment catalog. A standalone social-video ecosystem.

Netflix is therefore borrowing a useful interface pattern—vertical, swipeable discovery—without the research supporting the broader claim that Netflix is turning into TikTok. Clips may shorten the path between idle phone time and a full Netflix title; whether Clips can produce repeat viewing rather than short-lived swiping remains an open question.

Why does live programming matter to Netflix’s next phase?

Live programming matters because simultaneous viewing creates urgency, cultural conversation, and opportunities for participation that ordinary on-demand video does not.

A finished series can be watched days or months after release. A live competition, awards event, comedy special, or sports event has a shared moment. Real-time voting strengthens that effect by giving the viewer a direct reason to be present. The viewer is not only asking “What should I watch?” but also “What can I influence right now?”

  • The Google TV Streamer (4K) delivers your favorite entertainment quickly, easily, and personalized to you[1,2]
  • HDMI 2.1 cable required (sold separately)
  • See movies and TV shows from all your services right from your home screen[2]; and find new things to watch with tailored recommendations for everyone in your home based on their interests and viewing habits
  • Watch live TV and access over 800 free channels from Pluto TV, Tubi, and more[3]; if you find an interesting show or movie on your TV, mobile app, or Google search, you can easily add it to your watchlist, so it’s ready when you are[2]
  • Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound

That does not mean Netflix is rebuilding a traditional cable bundle. The stronger interpretation is selective appointment viewing: Netflix can add live events where immediacy, fandom, or participation makes the format more valuable. The voting feature is the clearest example because the outcome depends on a limited window of audience action.

Netflix’s 2026 FIFA game announcement shows how live-event strategy and gaming can overlap. Netflix said on June 4, 2026, that its FIFA World Cup: Launch Edition TV game was available in 20 countries at that time, with further rollout planned. The dated and limited rollout reinforces an important qualification: Netflix’s interactive television ambitions are being deployed feature by feature, title by title, and market by market.

How do advertising and Netflix’s global scale support the strategy?

Netflix’s global membership base and advertising reach give Netflix a large audience on which to test new ways of watching, playing, discovering, and sharing, although the available figures do not prove that any individual experiment is financially successful.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

According to Netflix (2025), the company had more than 300 million paid memberships in more than 190 countries. Netflix published that membership-scale description in its 2025 company communication. Such geographic reach matters because a feature can be tested across different viewing habits, devices, languages, and entertainment markets rather than being designed for only one national television system.

According to Netflix’s 2025 Upfront announcement, the ad-supported plan had more than 94 million global monthly active users. Netflix reported the 94-million figure in its May 14, 2025 advertising communication.

According to Netflix’s 2026 Upfront announcement, Netflix reached more than 250 million global monthly active viewers with ads. Netflix reported the 250-million figure on May 13, 2026. The 94-million figure refers to monthly active users for the ad-supported plan in the 2025 announcement, while the 250-million figure refers to global monthly active viewers reached with ads in 2026. The different wording and timeframes mean the figures should not be presented as a simple like-for-like growth calculation.

Netflix’s 2026 communication also said that, in 2025, Netflix had more Nielsen Top 10 originals than any other streamer, almost five times its nearest competitor. That is a Netflix communication citing Nielsen data, not an independent causal finding about interactive products. The figure helps explain Netflix’s ability to connect new interfaces to a large catalog of known titles, but it does not show that voting, TV games, or Clips caused the performance.

What became concrete after the Disrupt 2025 conversation?

Several ideas discussed around Disrupt became documented Netflix products or announced rollouts by August 13, 2026, while the sources do not show that every idea had reached a universal release.

Date Development Status and significance
September 22, 2025 TechCrunch announced Elizabeth Stone’s Disrupt session. Established the event conversation as a strategy-and-product discussion about Netflix’s next direction.
October 9, 2025 Netflix announced TV party games. Five titles were named, with phones serving as controllers.
October 27–29, 2025 TechCrunch Disrupt 2025 took place at Moscone West in San Francisco. Stone discussed real-time participation, short-form discovery, and other product directions.
January 20, 2026 Netflix announced real-time voting. Voting was documented for selected live events through a TV remote or the mobile app.
April 30, 2026 Netflix introduced Clips. The vertical mobile feed connected short excerpts to watching, saving, and sharing Netflix titles.
June 4, 2026 Netflix announced FIFA World Cup: Launch Edition for TV. The announcement described TV-game availability in 20 countries at that time and additional rollout planned.
By August 13, 2026 Netflix had documented voting, TV party games, phone-as-controller gaming, and Clips. Those were concrete follow-through points; their effect on retention, revenue, or viewing was not established.

The timeline supports a measured conclusion. Netflix did not announce one single “interactive Netflix” product. Netflix added several surfaces—live participation, group games, mobile discovery, and connected-device play—that collectively make the service more active.

What remains unproven about Netflix’s streaming strategy?

The biggest unanswered question is whether Netflix can turn novelty into durable, repeatable engagement.

  • The researched sources do not provide an authoritative causal study showing that the Disrupt announcements increased viewing, retention, revenue, or subscriber growth.
  • Netflix has not established that real-time voting will be used across all live events; the documented feature is limited to selected events.
  • Netflix has not established worldwide access for every TV game, and the FIFA announcement illustrates that rollout can be country-specific.
  • A Netflix-compatible television device does not by itself guarantee access to every game, live vote, or mobile discovery feature.
  • Clips is documented as a discovery feed connected to Netflix’s catalog, not as proof that Netflix is replacing TikTok with a full social-video network.

These limits matter because reach is not the same as engagement quality. A viewer might try a party game once, swipe through Clips briefly, or vote during one live event without changing long-term subscription behavior. The available research supports the existence and direction of the experiments, not a measured business outcome.

What’s next for Netflix and streaming itself at Disrupt 2025?

What’s next is a Netflix service that asks viewers to do more than press play. Live voting makes some audiences participants, phone-controlled TV games make the television a shared play surface, and Clips makes mobile video a discovery layer for Netflix’s catalog.

The strategic synthesis is broader than any one feature. Netflix is extending its entertainment properties across live events, games, advertising, mobile interfaces, and connected devices. Netflix’s global scale makes those experiments plausible, but scale does not remove the practical limits of device compatibility, regional rollout, plan access, or the need to prove that participation becomes a habit.

The most accurate forecast is not that Netflix will become cable, TikTok, or a traditional game console. Netflix is building a more active entertainment environment around its existing catalog. The unresolved test is whether watching, voting, playing, discovering, and sharing can work together well enough to make Netflix feel like a place to participate—not merely a library of videos.

The Bottom Line

Netflix’s next phase is not a simple move into TikTok or game consoles. By August 13, 2026, Netflix had documented a broader active-entertainment strategy built around selected live voting, phone-controlled TV games, mobile Clips discovery, and a large global audience.

The features are real, but their business impact is not yet proven. Availability depends on the event, title, device, country, app, and plan.
