How to download music for offline listening on YouTube Music is straightforward: YouTube Music Premium or YouTube Premium lets you save songs, albums, and playlists in the mobile app over Wi-Fi. Set downloads to Wi-Fi only, restrict streaming over cellular data, and reconnect at least once every 30 days to maintain downloads.
The process is designed for offline playback inside YouTube Music, not for creating MP3 files. The most important preparation is to download the exact music you need before leaving Wi-Fi, then verify the download and storage settings.
Key takeaways
- YouTube Music Premium or YouTube Premium is required to download music for offline playback; ad-supported YouTube Music may support some podcast downloads, but not Premium music downloads.
- YouTube Music downloads stay inside the mobile app and are not exported MP3 files that appear as ordinary music in a file manager.
- Google requires YouTube Music to reconnect to the internet at least once every 30 days to maintain offline downloads.
- Set the download connection to Wi-Fi only, and separately enable Stream via Wi-Fi only if you want to prevent ordinary playback from using cellular data.
- Google documents three download-quality settings: Low at 48 kbps, Normal at 128 kbps, and High at 256 kbps.
- Compatible Android phones can save new YouTube Music downloads to an SD card, but existing downloads must be deleted and downloaded again after changing the storage location.
How to download music for offline listening on YouTube Music
To download music for offline listening on YouTube Music, use a YouTube Music Premium or YouTube Premium account in the mobile app, connect to reliable Wi-Fi, open a song, album, or playlist, and choose Download. The saved content can then be played from YouTube Music without an active connection, but it remains app-managed rather than becoming an ordinary audio file.
What do you need before downloading music?
Music downloads require YouTube Music Premium or YouTube Premium. YouTube Music’s ad-supported tier can support some podcast downloads, but Google’s Premium documentation lists music downloads as a Premium benefit. Google’s YouTube Music help documentation also notes that Premium availability varies by country or region; the United States is among the listed locations.

Use the official YouTube Music mobile app rather than expecting a browser download to create a playable music file. The supported feature is offline playback within YouTube Music. Premium downloads should not be treated as MP3 files that can be copied to another player, edited in an audio program, or opened from a general-purpose file manager.
How do you download a song, album, or playlist?
- Connect your phone to a dependable Wi-Fi network. Downloading before a flight, trip, commute, or area with poor reception avoids relying on cellular service at the moment you need the music.
- Open the YouTube Music mobile app and locate the song, album, or playlist.
- Open the item’s menu if a Download control is not immediately visible, then choose Download.
- Wait for the download to finish while the phone remains connected to Wi-Fi.
- Open the app’s downloads area before leaving Wi-Fi and confirm that the intended content is available for offline playback.
You can download individual songs, complete albums, playlists, and eligible podcast content. Downloading a playlist does not make every future recommendation or newly added track available offline automatically; the downloaded selection is the content YouTube Music has saved.
For Google’s current Android-specific controls, including the download menu and automatic-download options, see the official Android offline-download instructions.
How do you stop YouTube Music from using cellular data?
Downloading over Wi-Fi does not by itself prevent YouTube Music from streaming a track that was not downloaded. To save cellular data reliably, configure the download connection and the streaming connection as separate controls.
| Control | What it controls | Recommended setting for saving data |
|---|---|---|
| Download connection | When YouTube Music may fetch new offline content | Wi-Fi only |
| Stream via Wi-Fi only | Whether ordinary playback may stream over mobile data | Turn it on under Data saving |
| Downloaded-content playback | Playback of content already saved in YouTube Music | Start music from the downloads area when offline |
In YouTube Music settings, select Wi-Fi only for downloads. Then open the app’s Data saving settings and enable Stream via Wi-Fi only. The first setting blocks new download transfers over cellular data; the second restricts normal streaming. A downloaded song can still be played offline from within YouTube Music.
Google also documents a Wi-Fi and unrestricted mobile data option for certain participating carriers and supported Android configurations. Google’s documentation specifically identifies Verizon and AT&T in the United States, and says availability depends on Android version and carrier support. Do not assume that option exists on every Android phone or mobile plan; the Google Android settings documentation describes the applicable limitations.

Which YouTube Music download quality should you choose?
YouTube Music offers Low, Normal, and High download quality. Low uses the least storage, Normal is the practical balance for most listeners, and High prioritizes audio quality over storage efficiency.
| Setting | Documented bitrate | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Low | 48 kbps | Limited storage or maximum data efficiency | Lower audio quality |
| Normal | 128 kbps | Most listeners seeking a balanced setting | Uses more space than Low |
| High | 256 kbps | Listeners who prioritize sound quality | Uses the most storage of the three settings |
According to Google’s audio-quality documentation, the three download-quality choices are Low at 48 kbps, Normal at 128 kbps, and High at 256 kbps. Choose the quality before downloading a large library.

Changing the quality affects future downloads. Existing downloaded songs keep their current quality until you remove them and download them again. Changing the setting therefore does not retroactively shrink the files already stored on the phone.
There is no reliable fixed “songs per gigabyte” calculation. Google says the amount of downloadable music, podcasts, and albums depends on available device space and the length and quality of the saved files. Track duration, podcast length, and whether other content is downloaded also change the result.
Should you use Smart Downloads?
Smart Downloads automatically saves music based on listening history, which is useful if you want a changing offline selection without choosing every track manually. The feature can also consume storage unexpectedly, so review its downloads if phone space is limited.
According to Google’s Android documentation, Smart Downloads can download up to 200 recently played songs. On iPhone and iPad, Google calls the automatic selection the offline mixtape; the selection refreshes every 24 hours when the device is connected to Wi-Fi. These platform labels and behaviors are documented separately in Google’s Android offline-download instructions.

- Load apps faster with A1-rated performance[3].
To control automatic downloads, open YouTube Music’s download-management area and review Downloads & storage. If Smart Downloads or the offline mixtape has taken too much room, use Clear downloads, then download only the albums and playlists you actually need.
How can Android users store YouTube Music downloads on an SD card?
Compatible Android phones can save YouTube Music downloads to an SD card. This is useful when internal storage is tight, but an SD card is not a universal solution because many phones have no removable-storage slot or do not support this feature.
- Install a compatible SD card in the Android phone.
- Open YouTube Music settings.
- Enable Use SD card as the download-storage location.
- Download the desired music again.
Google states that existing downloads cannot be moved directly between internal storage and an SD card. Delete the existing downloads, change the storage location, and download the content again. Google’s instructions for downloading music to an SD card provide the device-specific condition and the required workflow.
If your Android phone has a compatible card slot, a microSD card for Android phone can add room for app-managed offline downloads. Check the phone manufacturer’s storage specifications and the card’s compatibility before buying; the card gives YouTube Music more storage space, but the downloaded tracks remain controlled by YouTube Music and do not become ordinary MP3 files.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat changes on iPhone, iPad, and Wear OS?
iPhone and iPad support offline music downloads for Premium members, but Google’s documented Android SD-card workflow does not provide a removable-storage solution for iOS. iPhone and iPad users should manage YouTube Music downloads within the app and use the device’s available internal storage.
iPhone and iPad use the offline mixtape name for automatic downloads. The offline-mixtape selection refreshes every 24 hours when connected to Wi-Fi, according to Google’s platform documentation. Turn off or clear automatic downloads if the rotating selection consumes more space than expected.

Wear OS devices can download music and podcasts directly for offline listening. Playback can use a connected Bluetooth accessory such as headphones, and the amount of content depends on available watch storage. For Wear OS users, Bluetooth headphones or earbuds can complete the phone-free listening setup, but headphones do not save cellular data and are not required to download music to a phone. See Google’s YouTube Music device-support documentation for the Wear OS conditions.
How long do YouTube Music offline downloads last?
YouTube Music offline downloads are not permanent authorization independent of the service. Google requires the app to reconnect to the internet at least once every 30 days to maintain downloaded content.
Open YouTube Music while online before a long trip or an extended period without connectivity. The reconnection lets the app check the account and maintain the downloads under Google’s offline rules. The 30-day requirement does not guarantee that every downloaded item will remain available forever if catalog rights or account conditions change.
Google’s Premium availability and travel-policy documentation also describes the 30-day offline-download period under its stated travel conditions. Country availability, travel rules, supported devices, carrier options, and menu labels can change, so check the current Google help page if a trip will last more than a month.

The Download button is missing
Check that the account has YouTube Music Premium or YouTube Premium, that the content is eligible, and that you are using the mobile app while signed in to the correct account. Open the item’s menu if the Download control is not displayed directly on the content page. Podcast download behavior can differ from music-download eligibility.
The phone says there is not enough storage
Open Downloads & storage and remove unwanted downloads with Clear downloads, or delete selected content if the app offers that control. Lower the quality for future downloads, remembering that the quality change does not reduce existing files. On a compatible Android phone, changing the storage location to an SD card can provide more room, but existing downloads must be deleted and downloaded again.

Downloads are using mobile data
Set the download connection to Wi-Fi only and enable Stream via Wi-Fi only under Data saving. These settings address different transfers: one controls new downloads and the other controls ordinary streaming. Also avoid starting a fresh download while cellular service is enabled if the settings are uncertain.
Downloaded music will not play after a long trip
Reconnect the device to the internet and open YouTube Music. The app must reconnect at least once every 30 days to maintain downloads. Confirm that the correct Premium account is signed in and that the app has had an opportunity to verify the downloads before going offline again.
Downloads disappeared after changing storage
Changing between internal storage and an SD card does not directly move existing YouTube Music downloads. Follow Google’s documented sequence: remove the existing downloads, enable the new storage location, and download the music again.
A practical offline-listening checklist
- Confirm Premium eligibility and sign in to the intended account.
- Connect to reliable Wi-Fi before downloading.
- Set downloads to Wi-Fi only.
- Enable Stream via Wi-Fi only if ordinary streaming must not use cellular data.
- Choose Low, Normal, or High quality before downloading a large library.
- Review Downloads & storage and limit Smart Downloads if storage is scarce.
- Android users should enable Use SD card before downloading if the phone supports removable storage.
- Open YouTube Music online before a long offline period and at least once every 30 days.
- Start playback from the downloaded content rather than searching for an undownloaded track that could stream.
These steps provide the supported way to prepare YouTube Music for travel and reduce unexpected cellular usage. Third-party YouTube-to-MP3 downloaders are not part of Google’s documented workflow and should not be used as a substitute for Premium in-app downloads.
