That wording does not make the authorization insignificant. Jones gave Lucasfilm a way to preserve the vocal identity of Darth Vader without requiring him to perform dozens of new lines. Jones also remained involved creatively, advising the team as the production recreated the character’s younger, threatening sound.

Why did Lucasfilm use AI for Darth Vader?

The 2022 series therefore presented a preservation problem as much as a technology demonstration. The production wanted continuity with a familiar vocal identity, while Jones no longer needed to carry out every recording session personally. SAG-AFTRA said the dispute concerned the replacement of human interactive voice performers with AI and alleged that the change occurred without the union receiving notice or bargaining over it. The union’s public statement about Fortnite’s AI Darth Vader voice expressed support for performers’ and estates’ ability to control digital replicas. The accompanying NLRB charge filed by SAG-AFTRA records the union’s allegations, not a final ruling on the merits.
SAG-AFTRA’s statement did not say that Jones’s earlier authorization was invalid. The Fortnite episode demonstrates a different point: consent from a performer or estate may address voice-replica permission while leaving separate employment, collective-bargaining, contract, or performer-replacement questions unresolved.

Respeecher is a Ukrainian company specializing in synthetic speech and voice conversion. Vanity Fair reported that Respeecher’s staff continued working on the Vader project during Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, despite air-raid warnings, interruptions, and connectivity problems.
The production circumstance is notable, but it is not evidence that Respeecher owned Jones’s performance. The reporting identifies Respeecher as the company supplying the voice technology while Lucasfilm managed the production and Jones authorized the archival material.
