Disney+ is no longer the confirmed international partner for the next regular phase of Doctor Who, but the BBC has not cancelled the series. As of August 12, 2026, the BBC is putting the next production arrangement out to competitive tender. The previously announced 2026 Christmas episode will not proceed, and no replacement producer, showrunner, Doctor, streaming service or return date has been confirmed.
The franchise is therefore being restructured. Its television future is uncertain, but BBC ownership, BBC Studios distribution and licensing, a new CBeebies animation and other Doctor Who projects all point to continuation rather than disappearance.
Disney+ is leaving its Doctor Who partnership, but Doctor Who has not been cancelled. As of August 12, 2026, the BBC is rebuilding the production and international-distribution arrangement for the next regular phase of the series. The BBC still owns the Doctor Who intellectual property, says the show remains important to it, and plans to put the next production arrangement out to competitive tender during 2026.
The immediate outlook is less encouraging than earlier plans suggested: the BBC, Russell T Davies and Bad Wolf decided not to proceed with the previously announced 2026 Christmas episode. There is also no confirmed replacement streamer, producer, showrunner, Doctor or return date for a new regular season. The best description is a business and creative reset—not the end of Doctor Who.

What Disney+ actually did for Doctor Who
Disney+ was a distribution and financing partner, not the owner of Doctor Who. The BBC and Disney announced their arrangement around the programme’s 60th-anniversary specials and Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor era. Under that deal, new episodes premiered on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in the United Kingdom, while Disney+ carried them outside the UK and Ireland.
The 2024 season was produced by Bad Wolf with BBC Studios for Disney Branded Television and the BBC. The arrangement helped give the revived series an international streaming home and a larger production partnership, but it never transferred the underlying Doctor Who intellectual property to Disney.
That partnership has now ended for future Doctor Who. Disney’s decision should therefore be read as a withdrawal from the next phase of the production and distribution model, not as Disney removing the BBC’s ownership of the franchise or taking the programme off television everywhere.

On June 10, 2026, the BBC said it would put Doctor Who out to competitive tender during 2026. In practical terms, the next arrangement is open to bids. It has not already been assigned to Bad Wolf, another named producer or a replacement streaming service.

A tender could lead to several different outcomes:
- a new producer taking responsibility for the next production;
- a renewed or revised arrangement involving Bad Wolf;
- a BBC-led production model;
- a new international financing and distribution partnership; or
- a combination of BBC funding, a production company and one or more international platforms.
The BBC’s announcement does not establish which of those models will win. It also does not confirm that the next episodes will be BBC-only, move to Netflix, go to AMC+, return to Disney+ or appear on any other specific service. Reports naming a possible future home should not be treated as confirmation until the BBC or the relevant partner makes an official announcement.
Why the cancelled 2026 Christmas episode matters
The BBC, Davies and Bad Wolf also decided not to proceed with the previously announced Christmas episode planned for 2026. Earlier reports had described that special as the next short-term return for the programme, but the June 10 announcement supersedes those plans.
That means there is no confirmed new Doctor Who Christmas bridge episode in the current BBC plan. The decision removes an obvious way to keep the television series in front of viewers while the larger production deal was being rebuilt.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIt also makes a longer gap more likely. The BBC said it was prioritising Doctor Who’s long-term future rather than using a one-off special to bridge the current uncertainty. That does not give the next regular season a release date, and it does not guarantee that the eventual production will retain the previous creative team.
Russell T Davies’ reported departure adds creative uncertainty
June reporting also said that Russell T Davies had left Doctor Who. The BBC’s official update did not name a replacement showrunner. That distinction matters: the reported change increases uncertainty about the tone, format and story direction of the next phase, but it is not evidence that the BBC has cancelled the programme.

There is similarly no confirmed announcement about whether Ncuti Gatwa will return as the Doctor, whether a new Doctor will be cast, or whether a future season will continue directly from the Disney-era storylines. Those are open creative questions, not settled consequences of Disney+’s exit.
What is confirmed—and what is not
| Question | Current answer |
|---|---|
| Is Doctor Who cancelled? | No. The BBC says the property remains important and is preparing a longer-term continuation. |
| Who owns Doctor Who? | The BBC retains the Doctor Who intellectual property. |
| Who will produce the next phase? | Not confirmed. The BBC plans a competitive tender during 2026. |
| Who is the next showrunner? | Not announced by the BBC’s update. June reporting said Russell T Davies had left. |
| Who will play the Doctor? | Not confirmed. |
| Where will new episodes stream internationally? | Not confirmed. Disney+ is no longer the confirmed partner for the next regular phase. |
| When is the next regular season? | No return date was confirmed in the BBC announcement reviewed. |
| Is the 2026 Christmas episode still happening? | No. The BBC, Davies and Bad Wolf decided not to proceed with the previously announced special. |
What U.S. viewers can watch now
The U.S. streaming situation is becoming more fragmented, not less. There is no single confirmed service carrying every modern Doctor Who story as of August 12, 2026.
| Content | U.S. service or arrangement | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Doctor Who from 2005 through 2022 | AMC+ Doctor Who library | AMC+ announced an exclusive U.S. streaming home for 13 seasons beginning June 11, 2026. |
| 60th-anniversary specials | Not part of the AMC+ library described in the announcement; check the current Disney+ catalog. | The specials are separate from the 2005–2022 library. |
| Ncuti Gatwa’s Disney-era seasons | Doctor Who on Disney+, where available | These seasons were reported as excluded from AMC+’s acquired library. Availability remains territory- and contract-dependent. |
| The War Between the Land and the Sea | Scheduled for Disney+ outside the UK, where available | This is a spin-off arrangement, not confirmation that Disney+ will carry the next main Doctor Who season. |
The AMC+ announcement covers the modern library beginning with Christopher Eccleston and continuing through the eras of David Tennant, Matt Smith, Peter Capaldi and Jodie Whittaker. It does not automatically include the 60th-anniversary specials or the two Disney-era seasons starring Gatwa.
For U.S. viewers, the practical result is a split catalogue: AMC+ is the announced home for the 2005–2022 run, while Disney+ remains relevant to the Disney-era episodes and the announced spin-off. Before subscribing, check the service’s current U.S. listing for the exact season or special you want. Streaming rights are licensed, can change, and should not be treated as permanent ownership.
A physical-media alternative
Fans who do not want their access to depend entirely on changing streaming contracts can also look for a Doctor Who DVD box set, Blu-ray release, book or audio drama. Editions differ by country, region coding and availability, so check the specific release rather than assuming that every box set contains the complete modern series.

What this means in the UK and internationally
The original arrangement kept BBC One and BBC iPlayer as the UK home for new episodes, with Disney+ handling international distribution outside the UK and Ireland. The end of the Disney partnership does not by itself announce a new international platform or change the BBC’s ownership.
For the next regular phase, the BBC has not confirmed whether episodes will remain primarily on its own services, receive a new global streaming partner, or use a mixed model. The tender is intended to resolve that production and distribution question. Until it does, claims that a particular platform has already won Doctor Who’s future rights are premature.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. The wider Whoniverse is still active
The main television series is being reorganised, but Doctor Who activity has not stopped. The BBC said a new CBeebies Doctor Who animation was in production. The official Doctor Who ecosystem also continues through audio, comics, novels, digital projects and immersive experiences.
One example is Circuit Breaker, a digital story featuring Jo Martin’s Fugitive Doctor. BBC Studios is also continuing global distribution, licensing, consumer products, digital activity and immersive experiences on the BBC’s behalf. That continuing infrastructure is strong evidence that the franchise remains an active BBC property rather than a programme being quietly abandoned.
These projects should be understood as additional Doctor Who, not replacements for a confirmed new live-action season. They can keep characters, stories and fan interest moving while the flagship production is restructured, but none of them supplies a release date for the next regular television run.

What fans should—and should not—expect next
- Expect a business announcement before a full creative roadmap. The competitive tender must establish the next production arrangement before a platform, schedule or season plan can be treated as settled.
- Do not treat the old Christmas plan as current. The previously announced 2026 special is no longer proceeding under the BBC’s June update.
- Do not assume the next Doctor has been chosen. Neither a return for Gatwa nor a recasting has been confirmed in the information available here.
- Expect the streaming map to remain uneven. The U.S. catalogue is already divided between AMC+’s 2005–2022 library and Disney-era material associated with Disney+, while other territories may have different contracts.
- Look for continuity outside the flagship series. The CBeebies animation, audio, print, digital and immersive projects show that the wider franchise is continuing.
The bottom line
Disney+’s exit is a serious setback because it removes the international partner that helped underpin the 2023 revival and the Gatwa era. It also leaves the BBC with a production, financing and distribution problem to solve, and the abandoned 2026 Christmas episode means the next television appearance may be further away than fans expected.
But the available evidence does not support calling Doctor Who cancelled. The BBC still owns the property, has publicly committed to finding a sustainable long-term arrangement, and continues to support the brand through BBC Studios distribution and licensing, a CBeebies animation and other media. The next chapter is uncertain; it is not absent.

Where can U.S. viewers watch modern Doctor Who?
In the U.S., AMC+ announced the 2005–2022 library, covering 13 seasons from Christopher Eccleston through Jodie Whittaker.
