NBC canceled the gritty Los Angeles crime drama before its second season in 2009, but TNT rescued it and carried it through five seasons. Southland was canceled by NBC—but it did not end there
Southland is the crime drama behind the “13 years after cancellation” headline. NBC canceled the series in October 2009, before its second season could air. TNT rescued it, premiered that second season in January 2010, and carried the show through four additional seasons. The completed five-season run ended in 2013.

Now, Netflix has given the series a new route to viewers. As of the latest U.S. availability check, all five seasons were added to Netflix on January 16, 2026. That is a catalog release—not a reboot, renewal, or order for new episodes—but it gives a new audience an uncomplicated way to watch the entire drama from beginning to end.
What is Southland about?
Created by Ann Biderman and produced by John Wells Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television, Southland follows patrol officers and detectives working across Los Angeles. Its stories move between street-level calls, investigations, victims, families, departmental pressure, and the private consequences of police work.

#1 Best Overall
The series begins with young patrol officer Ben Sherman, played by Ben McKenzie, on his first day working the streets. His training officer, John Cooper, played by Michael Cudlitz, has little patience for idealism and teaches Sherman through a mixture of hard experience, skepticism, and exacting expectations. Regina King plays detective Lydia Adams, one of the central figures in the show’s broader police ensemble.
That setup makes Southland more than a sequence of unrelated investigations. It has case-of-the-week elements, but the cases continually affect the officers who handle them. A routine call can become a moral crisis, a professional liability, or a reminder that police work reaches far beyond the people wearing the uniforms.
Why the cancellation history matters
The headline needs a small but important correction. Southland was not a five-season NBC show canceled after five seasons. NBC aired only its first season.
- NBC renewed the series for a second season in May 2009.
- NBC canceled it in October 2009 before that season aired.
- TNT acquired the rights and began broadcasting the show in January 2010.
- TNT ultimately aired four more seasons.
- TNT canceled Southland after five total seasons on May 10, 2013.
That distinction changes the story. Southland was an NBC casualty, but TNT’s intervention prevented the cancellation from becoming the end of the series. The show had time to develop its ensemble, deepen its character arcs, and complete a five-season run rather than disappearing after its original network season.

Calling the Netflix release a second chance is an editorial judgment, not an official industry label. It is nevertheless a fair description of what the release does: a concluded broadcast-and-cable drama that was once difficult to find in full is now available in one major U.S. subscription catalog.
Rank #2
- Genre: TV Crime
- Number of Discs: 85
- Number of Tracks: 0
- Rating: NR
- Number of Movies: 0
The complete-run aspect is especially important. Viewers do not have to stop after the NBC season, track down the TNT continuation separately, or reconstruct the show’s ending from scattered services. Netflix’s January 2026 release includes Seasons 1 through 5.
The series also has more industry recognition than its cancellation history might suggest. The Television Academy records three Emmy nominations connected to Southland‘s stunt coordination, including wins in 2011 and 2012 and another nomination in 2013. That does not establish a universal critical consensus, and “underrated” remains an opinion. It does, however, support the case for revisiting a serious, respected crime drama that never became as widely discussed as some of its contemporaries.
What makes Southland different from a glossy police procedural?
Southland is best approached as a gritty, character-driven ensemble drama rather than a lightweight procedural. Its appeal comes from the accumulation of consequences:
- Street-level perspective: The series spends time with patrol officers and the unpredictable calls that shape their work, not just with detectives solving a neatly contained mystery.
- Complicated professional relationships: Sherman and Cooper’s training relationship provides an ongoing conflict between youthful assumptions and veteran survival skills.
- Multiple points of view: Patrol officers, detectives, suspects, victims, families, and supervisors all influence the story.
- Serialized personal costs: The cases do not simply reset at the end of an episode. Fear, exhaustion, mistakes, ambition, and trauma carry forward.
- Los Angeles as a working environment: The city is not merely scenery. Its neighborhoods, distances, institutions, and social divisions affect how the characters do their jobs.
Viewers looking for a polished puzzle in every episode may find the show harsher and less tidy than a conventional procedural. Viewers who prefer grounded police dramas with continuing character development may find exactly what the headline promises.
Where to watch Southland in the U.S.
Netflix: Netflix added all five seasons in the United States on January 16, 2026. The latest availability check also listed the series with Netflix’s ad-supported Standard with Ads option. Catalogs, licensing windows, and tier access can change, so confirm the listing before subscribing or publishing a time-sensitive watch recommendation.
Rank #3
Digital purchase or rental: Current U.S. availability listings also identify Amazon Video, the Apple TV Store, and Fandango At Home as transactional options. These services may sell individual seasons or episodes rather than providing the same all-in-one subscription experience, and prices and formats can vary.
Physical media: DVD editions include individual season releases and a complete-series set. A Southland complete series DVD is the most straightforward option for viewers who want permanent access to all five seasons rather than relying on a changing streaming license. Stock, seller, condition, and regional compatibility should be checked before purchase.

Is Netflix bringing Southland back?
No. The Netflix release should not be described as a revival, reboot, renewal, or new season. Netflix has made the completed series available in its U.S. catalog; the available evidence does not indicate that it commissioned new episodes or ordered a continuation.
The phrase “gets a second chance” refers to audience discovery. The show has already finished its story, and Netflix’s role here is to make that finished story easier to find.
Who should watch it?
Southland is a strong choice for viewers who like serious police dramas built around people rather than only plot mechanics. It is particularly suited to audiences who value:
Rank #4
- Factory sealed DVD
- grounded patrol and detective stories;
- serialized character arcs;
- morally difficult cases rather than simple heroes and villains;
- an ensemble cast whose roles evolve over time;
- intense depictions of the pressures and consequences of police work.
It is less suitable for viewers seeking a relaxed, episodic mystery or a cleanly reassuring portrait of law enforcement. The show’s central attraction is its discomfort: officers make judgments under pressure, institutions impose their own demands, and success on the job does not necessarily produce a good personal outcome.

Start with Season 1 rather than searching for a “best” TNT entry point. The first season establishes Sherman’s inexperience, Cooper’s methods, Adams’s investigative world, and the show’s view of Los Angeles. Watching in order also makes the later seasons’ professional and personal developments more meaningful.
If you are sampling the series, give it enough time to reveal its ensemble structure. It is not only Ben Sherman’s coming-of-age story, and it is not only John Cooper’s veteran perspective. The drama becomes more substantial as those individual stories intersect with the work of the wider department.
The bottom line
Southland is the former NBC crime drama at the center of the headline—but the accurate history is more interesting than the shorthand. NBC canceled it before Season 2 aired; TNT rescued it and delivered four more seasons; TNT then ended the completed five-season series in 2013. Netflix’s January 2026 U.S. release now puts that full run in one place.
There is no new season to expect, but there is a genuine opportunity to rediscover a gritty Los Angeles police drama with a strong ensemble, continuing character consequences, and a documented record of stunt-coordination recognition. For viewers who missed it the first time, this is a practical second chance to watch the whole story.
