Why viewers criticized the tracks
Journalists and viewers reported several noticeable problems: robotic or flat delivery, inconsistent cadence, dialogue timing that did not always align cleanly with the subtitles, and limited emotional variation. These are reported observations, not the result of an independent technical test, and they should not be treated as a laboratory measurement of every episode or language track.

Banana Fish is more than a convenient test title
Banana Fish is a 24-episode television anime adapted from Akimi Yoshida’s manga. The official production information lists Hiroko Utsumi as director, Koji Seko as series composer, Akemi Hayashi as character designer, and MAPPA as the animation studio. Yuma Uchida and Kenji Nojima are listed among the Japanese cast members for Ash Lynx and Eiji Okumura. The official staff and cast page provides the production credits.
The official synopsis introduces Ash Lynx as a 17-year-old New York street-gang leader investigating the phrase Banana Fish after encountering a wounded man. He meets Eiji Okumura, a Japanese assistant to a photographer, and the two become connected to the mystery. The official episode list ends with episode 24, The Catcher in the Rye. The official story and episode pages outline the premise and series structure.
The anime originally began broadcasting in Japan in July 2018. Amazon Prime Video was announced as its exclusive distributor in Japan and overseas during the original release period, which explains why Prime Video was associated with the later audio controversy. It does not, however, prove that Amazon owned all of the underlying rights or had unilateral authority over every localization decision.
That context helps explain why the AI Beta label attracted unusually strong attention. This was not an unfinished web short or an anonymous test file. It was a finished adaptation of a well-known manga, with a carefully constructed dramatic identity and a performance-led story. Replacing a conventional localization process with a visibly low-fidelity track made the financial and creative trade-offs unusually easy for viewers to see.
What the Banana Fish case says about AI dubbing
1. AI localization is not one clearly defined process
Amazon’s broader initiative was described by Engadget as AI-aided dubbing, not necessarily fully autonomous voice replacement. The company reportedly began piloting English and Latin American Spanish dubs for selected licensed Prime Video series and films that might otherwise not have received dubs. An AI-aided process could theoretically involve translation assistance, timing, voice synthesis, editing, or human review at different stages. The available sources do not say which of those roles were automated here, how much human supervision was provided, or whether a conventional voice director was involved. Treating every AI-dubbing project as the same technology would obscure the questions that matter most.
2. Lower cost does not remove the quality-control problem
A synthetic track may make it financially possible to offer more language options. That is the business case implied by the broader pilot: some titles may not receive a conventional dub because the expected audience does not justify the cost. But a new audio option can also affect how viewers judge the platform, the title, and the localization process.
The Banana Fish rollout demonstrated the risk of shipping an easily identifiable beta-quality result on a finished series. If the track sounds unnatural, fails to match the scene, or gives characters the same emotional texture, the experiment becomes the story. A low-cost option is not automatically a neutral addition when it is presented alongside a professionally produced work.
3. Consent and contractual transparency are central
Voice actors, translators, directors, localization companies, rights holders, and production committees may all have different interests in how a dub is made. Until the parties publish more information, it is more accurate to describe the approval and rights questions as unanswered than to declare the release authorized or unauthorized.
4. Removing one track does not mean Amazon abandoned the strategy
The withdrawal of the Banana Fish English track should not be described as the end of Amazon’s AI-dubbing program. Later reporting said Amazon continued exploring AI-related dubbing and advertised roles connected with AI-enabled dubbing capabilities, although the referenced listing was subsequently deleted. GamesRadar’s coverage supports a cautious conclusion: this particular rollout was withdrawn, while the wider strategy remained under exploration.

Where to watch Banana Fish now
Streaming availability is territory-specific and can change without notice. A U.S. listing checked by JustWatch on June 22, 2026, showed Banana Fish available through Prime Video and Prime Video with Ads. That is a dated availability observation, not a guarantee that the title remains in the same catalog today.
