For awards-minded viewers and serious drama
Anora (2024)
If you want one starting point, choose Anora. Sean Baker’s film follows a Brooklyn romance that collides with the intervention of an oligarch family. That setup sounds like a social comedy, but the film keeps changing shape, moving through romance, farce, class tension, and increasingly painful uncertainty. Mikey Madison anchors the movie with a performance that has to carry both its physical energy and its emotional reversals. The film won five Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Actress, but its appeal is not limited to awards-season viewers: it is a propulsive, unpredictable watch.
If Anora becomes a favorite, readers who prefer physical media can look for Anora DVD or Blu-ray rather than depend on a changing streaming catalog. Check the edition and current availability before buying.
Anatomy of a Fall (2023)
This is a courtroom film, but not a conventional whodunit. After a husband’s death, the legal process becomes a battle between competing explanations of what happened and what the couple’s relationship was really like. The film’s tension comes from ambiguity: each new piece of evidence can clarify the case or make the people involved harder to understand. Choose it when you want a cerebral legal drama that leaves room for argument after the credits.
A Real Pain (2024)
David and Benji are cousins traveling through Poland in tribute to their late grandmother. Their trip gives the film a physical itinerary, but the real subject is the uncomfortable contrast between them: one more controlled and responsible, the other more volatile and openly needy. A Real Pain uses comedy to make its emotional material approachable without making grief or family history feel tidy. It is a particularly good choice when you want something intimate, funny, and ultimately affecting.

BlackBerry (2023)
BlackBerry turns the rise and fall of the once-dominant smartphone company into a sharp, darkly comic business story. Its pleasure comes from watching invention, ambition, office politics, and poor decisions accelerate together. This is a good pick for viewers who like tech dramas but want something more caustic and character-driven than a straightforward corporate success story.
A Complete Unknown (2024)
This Bob Dylan biopic concentrates on his early career and the artistic transition that changed how audiences understood him. Rather than attempting to summarize an entire life, it focuses on a period of creative movement: a young musician finding a voice, attracting attention, and making choices that unsettle the people around him. Watch it for the performance-centered approach and the tension between artistic independence and public expectation.
The Last Showgirl (2024)
Pamela Anderson leads this reflective performance drama about a veteran performer confronting a turning point. Its emotional weight comes from questions of identity, aging, work, and what remains when a familiar stage is no longer available. This is not the choice for a fast plot; it is better suited to a night when you want a character study built around a performer’s inner life.

The Woman King (2022)
Viola Davis leads this historical action drama, which combines a warrior-centered story with questions of loyalty, leadership, and collective responsibility. It works as a substantial action pick rather than merely a prestige title with battles: the physical set pieces give the film momentum, while its central performances give the conflict personal stakes.
For independent films, romance, and visual discovery
Rye Lane (2023)
Rye Lane follows two strangers over a single day in London, using a chance connection and a playful visual style to turn a short encounter into a full romantic journey. It is brisk, colorful, and self-aware without becoming emotionally weightless. Choose it when you want romance with momentum and a sense that the city itself is part of the movie’s personality.
Tangerine (2015)
This energetic Sean Baker independent film has a street-level immediacy and a deliberately restless pace. Its world feels crowded, improvised, and alive, with the story driven by friendships, arguments, and urgent movement through Los Angeles. It makes a useful companion to Anora: both films are interested in people navigating money, desire, and unstable circumstances, but Tangerine is scrappier and more openly kinetic.
Perfect Days (2023)
Hirayama’s life is organized around routine, and the film finds meaning in the details of that routine: work, music, books, trees, and small encounters. Perfect Days is observational rather than plot-heavy. Its appeal is rhythm and attention, so it is an excellent choice when you want to slow down rather than chase twists or spectacle.
The Tree of Life (2011)
Terrence Malick’s lyrical family drama moves between intimate memory and expansive images of nature and existence. It is meditative, impressionistic, and deliberately less linear than a conventional family story. Watch it when atmosphere and visual poetry matter as much as narrative clarity; it is not the best selection for viewers seeking a tightly plotted evening.
Triangle of Sadness (2022)
This biting class satire places luxury travelers and social elites in an environment where money and status gradually lose their protective power. Its setting allows the film to mock beauty culture, privilege, service work, and the idea that wealth automatically produces competence. It is a good group-viewing choice if the group enjoys uncomfortable comedy and arguments about what the film is really saying.
Call Me By Your Name (2017)
This introspective coming-of-age romance is built around desire, discovery, memory, and the ache of a relationship that cannot remain suspended in summer forever. It is patient and emotionally inward rather than plot-driven. In the September 2025 Hulu reporting used for this guide, it was identified as a new addition, making it one of the month’s notable options for viewers looking for a serious romance.

Never Let Me Go (2010)
Based on Kazuo Ishiguro’s novel, Never Let Me Go is best approached as a melancholy speculative romance, not as science-fiction action. Its premise gradually changes the meaning of friendship, love, and personal choice, while the film remains focused on emotional and ethical consequences. Choose it for quiet sadness and moral questions, not spectacle.
When you want horror, science fiction, or tension
Late Night With the Devil (2023)
A late-night television host tries to rescue a struggling 1970s broadcast with an increasingly dangerous guest and a live occult escalation. The period-TV format gives the horror a specific texture: the viewer is watching a show attempt to remain entertaining as control starts to disappear. It is an ideal late-night selection for viewers who like retro presentation, supernatural dread, and a premise that grows more alarming in public.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Presence (2024)
Steven Soderbergh’s supernatural thriller takes an unusual point of view inside a haunted-house story. The perspective changes how the viewer reads rooms, family interactions, and the presence itself, creating tension through observation rather than constant explanation. Go with Presence when you want a formally distinctive ghost story that is more interested in viewpoint and family unease than in conventional jump-scare mechanics.
No One Will Save You (2023)
This lean alien-invasion thriller is notable for using very little dialogue. The reduced conversation puts pressure on movement, sound, reaction, and the protagonist’s isolation as the threat closes in. It is a strong choice when you want a compact, high-concept thriller that gets to the danger quickly and trusts visual storytelling to carry much of the suspense.
Prey (2022)
Set within the Predator franchise but centered on Naru, Prey combines survival adventure with a focused coming-of-age and proving-yourself story. Its action is direct and its premise is easy to grasp even if you are not deeply invested in the franchise. Pick it for a brisk, physical movie night with a clear protagonist and strong survival stakes.
For comedy, comfort, and group viewing
Juno (2007)
Juno is a fast, character-driven coming-of-age comedy-drama with a distinctive voice and a strong ensemble. Its humor keeps the film moving, while its central decisions give the story more emotional substance than a standard teen comedy. It remains an accessible choice for viewers who want something witty, warm, and grounded in complicated young-adult feelings.

Plan B (2021)
This youthful road-trip comedy follows friends dealing with an urgent situation while trying to preserve their friendship and sense of agency. Its energy comes from the journey, but its core is the relationship between the two young women at the center. Choose it for a contemporary, fast-moving comedy that treats reproductive agency as part of the characters’ lives rather than as a distant talking point.

Thelma (2024)
Thelma puts a senior protagonist at the center of a personal-stakes adventure. The result is a comedy with forward motion and an unusually specific perspective: the danger is real to the character, but the film also finds humor in assumptions about age, independence, and vulnerability. It is an easy recommendation when you want an upbeat adventure that does not default to young heroes.
Mean Girls (2004)
The 2004 Mean Girls is the quotable high-school comedy that turned cafeteria politics, social hierarchies, and adolescent performance into enduring pop-culture shorthand. Its jokes are broad, but its observations about belonging and conformity are precise enough to keep it from feeling disposable. Search by year so you do not accidentally select a different adaptation or remake.
School of Rock (2003)
Jack Black’s music comedy remains one of the safest group-viewing choices on this list. A substitute teacher’s unconventional classroom becomes a vehicle for performance, confidence, and collaboration, while the film keeps its tone warm and accessible. It works for viewers who want a comedy with music, a clear emotional payoff, and broad family appeal.
Recommended Free Tools
The Sound of Music (1965)
This classic musical offers family-centered comfort, memorable songs, and a sweeping story that moves from domestic adjustment to historical danger. Its length and older-Hollywood style make it a different kind of watch from the contemporary films here, but that is part of its appeal. Choose it for a shared viewing occasion or a familiar classic rather than a quick, modern comedy.
How to Train Your Dragon (2010)
Hiccup’s relationship with a dragon gives this animated adventure its emotional center, while the larger story concerns courage, empathy, and changing a community’s assumptions. It is accessible family viewing without being empty children’s entertainment. The September 2025 Hulu schedule reported the film as an addition; How to Train Your Dragon 2 was also reported among that month’s arrivals, although it is not counted in this 27-film list.
Dead Poets Society (1989)
The school setting and early-autumn atmosphere make Dead Poets Society a natural September recommendation, but it should not be mistaken for light family comfort viewing. Its inspirational ideas about teaching, individuality, and expression sit alongside substantial emotional material. Pick it when you want a reflective school drama that can lead to a serious conversation afterward.
Love Actually (2003)
This sprawling ensemble romantic comedy interweaves several relationships against a holiday-season backdrop. Its appeal is variety: different tones, couples, and kinds of romantic complication share the same seasonal frame. Availability needs especially careful checking because the historical where-to-watch information for this title can age quickly. If Hulu does not return the film in your region or at the time you are reading, treat it as a recommendation from the September snapshot rather than a current availability claim.

What was new or newly highlighted in September 2025?
It is useful to separate two ideas that streaming lists often blur. A film can be one of the best movies in a service’s reported lineup without being a new arrival, while a new arrival is not automatically one of the service’s strongest films. Call Me By Your Name was specifically reported as a September 2025 addition, and the monthly Hulu schedule reported How to Train Your Dragon arriving, along with How to Train Your Dragon 2. September coverage also drew attention to recognizable choices such as School of Rock, Mean Girls, and The Sound of Music.
Hulu’s monthly schedules can also contain alternate-language or duplicate Spanish-language listings. If a title does not appear under the first search result, try the exact English title, year, and language option rather than assuming the film has disappeared.
How to check Hulu availability before watching
- Search the exact title and release year. This is particularly important for films with remakes or multiple adaptations, including Mean Girls and How to Train Your Dragon.
- Confirm the U.S. catalog. Hulu availability is market-specific, so a listing found through a general search may describe another service, country, or a historical availability window.
- Distinguish a Hulu listing from an add-on or rental result. A movie appearing in a search ecosystem does not necessarily mean it is included with the Hulu plan you use.
- Check the title again on viewing day. Licensing changes can remove a film after an article or monthly schedule has been published.
For a September 2025 article, the most accurate wording is reported in Hulu’s U.S. September 2025 lineup. For a later update, every title needs a fresh U.S. availability check before using the phrase stream now.
