The best Christmas movie on Hulu depended on your mood in December 2024. The standout options ranged from The Polar Express and Elf for family viewing to Die Hard for action and It’s a Wonderful Knife for adult Christmas horror. Because Hulu’s catalog changes, this guide should be read as a December 2024 snapshot—not a guarantee of what is streaming now.
If you were choosing from Hulu’s December 2024 holiday selection, these were the 10 strongest picks from the service’s seasonal lineup. The list is intentionally broad: it includes animated family fantasy, classic comedy, romance, horror, action, and even a Christmas-set thriller. It is not an objective Hulu ranking, and “best Christmas movies” here means the most worthwhile choices identified by the editorial selection—not that every film is a traditional Santa story.
The 10 best Christmas movies on Hulu in December 2024
1. Nutcrackers (2024)
Rating: PG-13
Best for: Viewers who want a contemporary family comedy-drama
David Gordon Green’s Nutcrackers gave Hulu’s holiday lineup one of its clearest modern Christmas recommendations. Ben Stiller plays Mike Maxwell, a single man who unexpectedly becomes responsible for his four nephews after the deaths of his sister and brother-in-law.

- PREMIUM PRINTED SATIN FINISH provides dynamic colors without the reflective glare
- POSTER FRAME is a clean and modern design offered in a variety of colors to showcase the art and compliment any room decor
- LIGHTWEIGHT & EASY TO HANG construction allows for a quick installation of this framed poster using the attached sawtooth hanger so you can enjoy your wall art immediately
- PERFECT SIZE for any room; poster is 22.375" x 34" and finished size is 24.25" x 35.75" x .75"
- EASILY DECORATE any space to create the perfect decor for a party, bedroom, bathroom, kids room, living room, office, dorm, and more
The premise sets up the familiar clash between an adult unprepared for parenthood and children who need stability, but the Christmas setting gives the story additional emotional weight. It is not the safest choice for very young children because of its PG-13 rating, yet it may work well for families with older children and adults looking for something newer than the usual holiday reruns.
2. It’s a Wonderful Knife (2023)
Rating: R
Best for: Adults who want a Christmas slasher with a high-concept premise
It’s a Wonderful Knife twists the structure of It’s a Wonderful Life into a horror-comedy. Winnie Carruthers wishes she had never been born and wakes up in an alternate timeline where her family does not know her—and her brother has died.
The film uses Christmas as more than background decoration: its alternate-reality setup depends on the emotional contrast between holiday togetherness and the possibility of losing one’s place in the family. The R rating makes this an adults-only recommendation, particularly for viewers who prefer seasonal horror to sentimental holiday comfort.
3. Die Hard (1988)
Rating: R
Best for: Action fans and people who consider Christmas action movies part of the tradition
John McClane visits Los Angeles for his estranged wife’s company Christmas party, only for Hans Gruber and his crew to seize the building and take its guests hostage. McClane then spends Christmas Eve trying to stop the robbery and rescue the hostages.
Whether Die Hard is “really” a Christmas movie remains a perennial argument, but its holiday setting is central to the plot: the office party, Christmas music, decorations, gifts, and seasonal isolation all shape the story. It is best understood as a Christmas-set action thriller rather than a conventional holiday comedy. The R rating also makes it unsuitable for children.
4. The Polar Express (2004)
Rating: G
Best for: An all-ages family movie night
Robert Zemeckis’s animated adaptation of Chris Van Allsburg’s children’s book follows a boy who boards a magical train bound for the North Pole. Tom Hanks performs multiple voice roles as the train’s passengers and crew, including the conductor.

The film is built around belief, wonder, and the transition from childhood skepticism to renewed curiosity. Its train journey gives the movie a strong sense of movement and adventure, while the North Pole setting makes it one of the most unmistakably Christmas-focused choices on this list. With a G rating, it is the clearest selection for households seeking a movie that young children and adults can watch together.

If you want a permanent copy for annual viewings or a holiday gift, you can also look for The Polar Express 4K Blu-ray. Physical-media availability, edition, region, and price can change, and buying a disc is not required to watch the film on Hulu.
5. Elf (2003)
Rating: PG
Best for: A broad crowd-pleasing comedy
Will Ferrell stars as Buddy, a human who was raised by elves at the North Pole and travels to New York City to find his biological father. Buddy’s openhearted enthusiasm collides with New York cynicism, workplace exhaustion, and a family that is not prepared for the arrival of a fully grown man in an elf costume.
Elf remains one of the safest choices when a group cannot agree on what to watch. It has child-friendly fantasy, romantic and family subplots, recognizable Christmas songs and traditions, and enough fast-moving comedy to appeal to adults. The PG rating makes it more accessible than the R-rated options, although parents may still want to consider whether its humor suits younger children.

6. National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (1989)
Rating: PG-13
Best for: Adults and older teens who prefer dysfunctional-family comedy
Clark Griswold wants to create an old-fashioned family Christmas, but every part of the celebration becomes increasingly chaotic. Decorating, hosting relatives, choosing gifts, and maintaining holiday cheer all turn into escalating disasters.
This is a good choice for viewers who find the pressure to create a perfect Christmas funnier than the idealized version of the holiday. Its humor is louder, more adult, and more embarrassment-driven than Elf, so it is better suited to older audiences. Choose it when the group wants dysfunctional-family jokes and holiday escalation rather than a sentimental story about belief.
7. Miracle on 34th Street (1994)
Rating: PG
Best for: Families who want a traditional Santa story with a courtroom angle
In this remake, Richard Attenborough plays Kris Kringle and Mara Wilson plays Susan, a child whose belief in Santa is tested by the adults around her. When Kris claims to be the real Santa Claus, the question eventually reaches court.

- THIS TRENDS BACK TO THE FUTURE - ONE SHEET WALL POSTER uses high-resolution artwork and is printed on PhotoArt Gloss Poster Paper which enhances colors with a high-quality look and feel

- EASILY DECORATE any space to create the perfect decor for a party, bedroom, bathroom, kids room, living room, office, dorm, and more
The movie combines fantasy and family drama with a legal dispute over whether Kris is who he says he is. It also explores belief in the context of department stores, advertising, and commercial Christmas culture. That gives it more substance than a simple “is Santa real?” story while keeping the tone accessible for a family audience.
Hulu’s official December 2024 schedule listed Miracle on 34th Street as added on December 1, which anchors its inclusion in this historical lineup. That schedule was not a guarantee that the film would remain available throughout later seasons.
8. Christmas on the Farm (2021)
Rating: PG
Best for: A low-stakes holiday romance
Christmas on the Farm follows a New York socialite whose published account of farm life is not authentic. When her publisher visits during the holidays, she has to stage the rural lifestyle she wrote about.
The setup places the movie firmly in made-for-TV-style holiday romance territory: a polished urban life, an invented rural identity, a looming deception, and a Christmas visit that forces the protagonist to reconsider what she actually wants. It is not the pick for viewers looking for major action or complex horror, but it can fill the “easy, gentle seasonal romance” role in a holiday marathon.
9. Holly’s Holiday (2012)
Rating: PG-13
Best for: Romance-first viewing with a whimsical fantasy element
Holly is a successful executive whose professional life is on track but whose love life has stalled. After an accident involving a store mannequin, she encounters a seemingly perfect romantic partner, turning the story into a fantasy-tinged holiday romance.
The mannequin premise gives Holly’s Holiday a more overtly whimsical hook than a standard workplace or small-town Christmas romance. Its focus is primarily on Holly’s romantic expectations and emotional choices, making it a better match for viewers who want relationship drama with a seasonal fantasy conceit than for viewers seeking a traditional family Christmas movie.
10. A Nasty Piece of Work (2019)
Runtime: 90 minutes
Best for: Adults who want holiday atmosphere with menace
This horror-thriller from Hulu’s Into the Dark cycle begins with a worker being denied a Christmas bonus. He is then offered a chance at a promotion, but the opportunity becomes a violent contest against a rival.

The film uses workplace resentment, economic pressure, and the expectation of holiday generosity as the foundation for its threat. That makes it a particularly dark alternative to Christmas movies built around family warmth or romantic reconciliation. It is best saved for adults who want a compact, unsettling seasonal thriller rather than a movie for children or a conventional holiday gathering.

The source selection continued beyond these 10 titles. If you are building a longer December 2024 watchlist, it also highlighted the following films:
- Happiest Season (PG-13): A holiday romance-comedy starring Kristen Stewart and Mackenzie Davis. Harper’s Christmas visit is complicated because she has not been open with her conservative family about her relationship.
- A Christmas Carol (2019, R): FX’s darker drama-fantasy adaptation, starring Guy Pearce, Andy Serkis, Stephen Graham, and Tom Hardy.
- 12 Pups of Christmas: A seasonal, animal-centered option for viewers seeking a lighter holiday story.
- Christmas Crush: Another additional holiday selection from the source page.
Hulu’s holiday collection was broader still and included titles such as Christmas with the Kranks, Bad Santa, Last Christmas, and A Christmas Story Christmas. A live holiday hub can change over time, so those titles should be checked separately rather than treated as evidence of December 2024 availability today.
Which Hulu Christmas movie should you choose?
| What you want | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Young children and all-ages fantasy | The Polar Express | G-rated animated adventure centered on a magical Christmas train |
| Family viewing with a traditional holiday theme | Miracle on 34th Street | Santa-belief story with a courtroom mystery |
| A newer family-oriented movie | Nutcrackers | Contemporary family responsibility and Christmas comedy-drama |
| Broad comedy | Elf | Accessible fantasy, family, romance, and slapstick humor |
| Dysfunctional-family humor | Christmas Vacation | Holiday planning collapses into escalating chaos |
| Christmas romance | Christmas on the Farm or Holly’s Holiday | Low-stakes romance, with fantasy elements in the latter |
| Action | Die Hard | A Christmas-set hostage thriller rather than a traditional holiday comedy |
| Dark or frightening holiday viewing | It’s a Wonderful Knife or A Nasty Piece of Work | Both use Christmas imagery and themes for adult horror |
| A literary adaptation | A Christmas Carol (2019) | A darker, adult-oriented take on Dickens’s redemption story |
Are these really all Christmas movies?
They are Christmas movies in the broad seasonal-programming sense, but they do not all deliver the same kind of holiday experience. The Polar Express, Miracle on 34th Street, and Elf are conventional Christmas choices. Christmas on the Farm and Holly’s Holiday use the season as the setting for romance. Die Hard makes Christmas central to an action plot, while It’s a Wonderful Knife and A Nasty Piece of Work turn holiday expectations into horror material.
That genre range is the strength of this list: instead of assuming every viewer wants the same cheerful family film, it offers a path for different moods and age groups. Always check the rating and confirm the current Hulu listing before watching.

Are all 10 Christmas movies still on Hulu?
No. This is a historical guide to the Hulu holiday selection identified for December 2024. Streaming rights change, so check Hulu’s current catalog before planning to watch any title.
What is the best family Christmas movie on Hulu?
The Polar Express is the strongest all-ages choice because it is rated G and follows a magical train journey to the North Pole. Miracle on 34th Street and Elf are also family-oriented, although parents should review their ratings and tone for younger children.
Why is Die Hard considered a Christmas movie?
Die Hard is included because Christmas is central to its setting and plot, even though it is primarily an R-rated action thriller rather than a traditional holiday comedy.
The Bottom Line
For the safest family choice, start with The Polar Express. Choose Elf for a crowd-pleasing comedy, Die Hard for Christmas action, or It’s a Wonderful Knife and A Nasty Piece of Work for darker adult viewing. These recommendations describe Hulu’s December 2024 lineup, not guaranteed availability today.
