At CES 2018, Naughty America demonstrated an early augmented-reality prototype that placed a performer inside a smartphone’s live camera view. A user could move around the figure, pose beside her, and take a selfie. What Naughty America showed at CES 2018
The demonstration was a straightforward but attention-grabbing use of mobile AR. The phone camera displayed the surrounding room while software inserted an image or avatar of a porn performer into that view. The user could approach the figure, change position, appear next to her, and capture a selfie.
Contemporary coverage characterized the software as an early prototype that was still being developed. It was basic rather than a finished entertainment platform: the performer was not fully animated at the demonstration stage, and the main interaction was the ability to place her in the user’s physical surroundings for photos.
The project was associated with Apple’s ARKit, the mobile augmented-reality framework available to iPhone and iPad developers at the time. In practical terms, the idea was less about creating a conventional video scene and more about making a digital performer appear to occupy the same space as the person holding the phone.

Why the prototype was “safe for work”
The safe-for-work qualification was central to the product, not a minor footnote. Apple’s App Store rules prohibit overtly sexual or pornographic material, including explicit displays of sexual organs or sexual activity intended to stimulate erotic feelings. Google Play has similarly restricted pornography and content intended to be sexually gratifying, with only narrow exceptions for contexts such as education, documentary work, science, art, or catalog-style material.
That meant Naughty America had to separate the AR concept from the explicit content associated with its wider business. The CES version could demonstrate the technical appeal of posing with a performer without showing pornography inside a mainstream mobile app store. The result was an AR selfie experiment designed around distribution limits as much as around camera technology.
How the proposed business model was supposed to work
The company discussed a possible free-and-paid structure: users might receive one performer or avatar at no cost and then purchase additional performers through microtransactions. This was presented as a possible monetization plan, not as confirmed pricing, sales data, or a finalized public feature.
That model also explains why a simple selfie app could be commercially interesting. The underlying AR software could be distributed widely, while individual performers could function as optional digital content. However, the 2018 reporting does not establish that the proposed microtransaction system launched in that form.
It was not the same as later Naughty America AR products
Several later reports describe additional Naughty America experiments, but they should not be treated as evidence that the original CES prototype remained available unchanged.

Late 2018: a more explicit Android release
By October 2018, reporting described a Naughty America AR app for Android that placed life-sized, three-dimensional adult performers into the camera view. A free tier offered clothed or underwear versions, while nude characters were available to paying users. Because that type of content could not ordinarily be distributed through Apple’s App Store or Google Play under their store policies, the app was distributed directly through Naughty America’s website rather than through the standard storefronts.
This was a different stage of the company’s AR development from the safe-for-work CES prototype. It moved closer to explicit adult entertainment and therefore required a different distribution strategy.
2019: volumetric “holograms” and browser-based access
In 2019, VentureBeat reported that Naughty America had released AR “holograms” accessible through a third-party web browser on iOS, as well as through Android and selected virtual- and mixed-reality platforms. The system used room scanning and volumetric imagery to superimpose a performer into the viewer’s environment.
A headset was not necessarily required. The reported access methods included smartphones, tablets, laptops, desktops, and certain compatible VR or AR hardware. This later approach also reflected a change in the underlying technology. Naughty America reportedly moved away from an earlier computer-generated approach because producing realistic digital versions of real performers was difficult and expensive to animate.
Those 2019 details belong to the later hologram platform, not automatically to the 2018 selfie prototype. The terms “AR app,” “hologram,” and “selfie app” describe related experiments, but they do not prove that users were accessing one continuous product.

What the technology demonstrated
The most important part of the story is not that adult entertainment was the first industry to use selfies or augmented reality. Rather, the prototype shows how several emerging technologies were converging:
- Camera-based mobile AR: the phone’s camera supplied a live view of the user’s surroundings.
- Spatial placement: software positioned a performer within that view so the user could move around her and pose beside her.
- Room-aware interaction: later versions reportedly used room scanning and volumetric imagery to make performers appear more integrated into a physical environment.
- Social capture: the selfie provided a simple way to record and share the AR experience.
- Platform-aware design: the safe-for-work prototype reflected what could plausibly be demonstrated through mainstream mobile distribution channels.
At CES, the result was still technically modest. The performer was not described as a fully interactive, lifelike character. But the demonstration pointed toward a more immersive form of adult content in which the viewer’s own room, camera, and body position became part of the experience.

The distribution problem shaped the product
For ordinary mobile software, an app can usually rely on Apple’s App Store or Google Play for discovery, installation, payments, and updates. Explicit adult AR content does not fit comfortably within those channels. That creates practical problems involving hosting, age-gating, payment processing, installation, and software updates.
Naughty America’s later move toward direct website distribution, browser access, Android delivery outside the usual store route, and selected VR or mixed-reality platforms was therefore not just a technical preference. It was also a response to the rules imposed by the largest consumer software ecosystems.
The distinction matters when describing the 2018 demonstration. Calling it a publicly downloadable iPhone or Android app would overstate what the reporting established. The available contemporary descriptions identify an early prototype or work in progress, not a confirmed, continuously supported product listing.

What happened after the early experiments?
Naughty America continued to describe itself as offering AR and VR content in later commercial materials. A January 2026 XBIZ report also described a new AR video format called Shows on the Real Girls Now platform. The report said the format placed performers inside augmented-reality experiences and identified an initial lineup including Audrey Bitoni, Cubbi Thompson, Kayla Kayden, Ryan Keely, and Krystal Sparks.
