Start with Friendship or Warfare. They are the two most important new September 2025 arrivals on HBO Max: one is an uncomfortable A24 comedy about adult friendship, and the other is an intensely immersive modern-war thriller. The month’s wider schedule is even more varied, adding acclaimed crime films, classic Hollywood discoveries, horror, anime, documentaries, romance, and crowd-pleasing action.
This is a U.S. historical streaming guide for September 2025. The recommendations reflect HBO Max’s announced September schedule, including the large library drop on September 1, Friendship on September 5, and Warfare on September 12. Streaming rights are temporary, so these titles may not still be available after that window. HBO Max’s own guidance recommends checking the Just Added, Last Chance, and What’s New sections for the current catalog.
The list below is ranked by recommendation priority within broad categories, not by an official HBO Max ranking. Most of these films are licensed library additions rather than HBO Max originals.

Best new arrivals and high-priority films
1. Friendship
Best for: uncomfortable contemporary comedy.
Tim Robinson and Paul Rudd lead this A24 dark comedy about adult friendship, social anxiety, and the increasingly strange effort to connect with another person. It is the clearest first choice for viewers who want something genuinely new, offbeat, and more awkward than conventional studio comedy. HBO Max listed it for September 5, 2025.

2. Warfare
Best for: viewers prepared for a relentless modern-war thriller.
Directed by Alex Garland and Ray Mendoza, Warfare is the month’s most intense new dramatic arrival. Its appeal is immersion rather than light entertainment: expect a tense, physically immediate war film best suited to viewers seeking serious conflict drama. It was scheduled to arrive on September 12, 2025.
3. Goodfellas
Best for: a canonical crime film with exceptional momentum.
Martin Scorsese’s gangster classic remains one of the safest prestige recommendations on the schedule. The film’s propulsive editing, dark humor, volatile performances, and rise-and-fall structure make it equally useful for a first viewing or a repeat watch. Tom’s Guide highlighted its 94% Rotten Tomatoes score in its September 2025 coverage, although review scores can change over time.
4. Dog Day Afternoon
Best for: tense, character-driven crime drama.
Sidney Lumet’s 1975 hostage drama gives Al Pacino one of his defining roles and turns a confined criminal situation into a complicated portrait of desperation, media attention, and public sympathy. Its 50th anniversary in 2025 makes this September addition especially timely, but the film’s human-scale tension is the real reason to watch.
5. Evil Dead II
Best for: horror fans who want invention and laughs alongside the scares.
Sam Raimi’s influential sequel is a compact blast of physical comedy, splatter, manic camera movement, and survival-horror energy. It is a lighter alternative to the month’s grim thrillers while still delivering plenty of genre violence. TheWrap specifically singled it out among September’s worthwhile additions.
6. Se7en
Best for: bleak crime procedural suspense.
David Fincher’s rain-soaked thriller follows two detectives investigating a series of murders organized around the seven deadly sins. Its controlled visual style and relentlessly grim atmosphere make it a strong pick for serious, disturbing suspense rather than casual background viewing. Content warning: the film contains graphic violence and deeply upsetting subject matter.
7. Misery
Best for: a tightly contained psychological thriller.
Rank #2
- 8K HDMI Extender: This HDMI to HDMI Adapter connects two HDMI cables to realize long-distance transmission. It can support 8K@60Hz / 4K@120Hz, DT, Dolby sound, VRR, and HDR, helping you enjoy a high-definition visual feast

- Wide range of applications: standard HDMI interface, suitable for all devices with HDMI male head, such as TV Box, Xbox 360, PS4, PC, Laptop, HDTV, Monitor, and Projector.Worked great to extend an HDMI cable instead of having to run a new longer cable in a tight complicated space
- After-sales service: 2 x 8K HDMI Double Female Adapter
Based on Stephen King’s novel, Misery builds suspense from a brutally simple situation: a writer is injured and dependent on a fan whose devotion becomes terrifying. It is one of the most efficient thrillers in the lineup, with a small setting that steadily becomes more threatening.
8. Prometheus
Best for: large-scale science fiction and franchise mythology.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Ridley Scott’s Alien prequel is visually ambitious and deliberately concerned with origins, creation, and the consequences of searching for answers. Its mythology is divisive, so it is best approached as an atmospheric science-fiction adventure and world-building exercise rather than a universally satisfying explanation of the franchise.
9. The Cabin in the Woods
Best for: horror fans who enjoy satire as much as scares.
This self-aware horror movie starts with familiar genre ingredients and then uses them to examine the rules, expectations, and machinery behind horror stories. It works particularly well for viewers who already know the conventions it is playing with, but it remains entertaining as a fast-moving genre film in its own right.
10. Selena
Best for: an emotionally direct music biopic.
Selena offers a welcome counterweight to September’s darker crime and horror selections. It combines performance, family, ambition, and cultural identity in a broadly accessible musical drama, making it a good choice when a movie night calls for warmth and emotional lift rather than dread.

12. Pirate Radio
Best for: a soundtrack-centered period comedy-drama.

15. The Fate of the Furious
Best for: franchise action and group viewing.

16. Jonah Hex
Best for: knowingly pulpy comic-book western fantasy.
