Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If HBO Max plays dialogue or music while the picture is black, blank, or frozen, playback has probably started but the video-rendering or protected-display path has failed. The fastest way to identify the cause is to test another title and then test HBO Max on another supported device using the same network. If the second device works, concentrate on the original app, browser, TV, HDMI cable, receiver, or streaming player. If every device fails, investigate the network, account, service status, or a broader outage.
The service may appear as Max in help instructions and menus while the consumer-facing name is changing back to HBO Max. The app experience, programming, plans, and pricing are not changed by that name transition.
Start with this 60-second diagnosis
- Play a different HBO Max title. If only one movie or episode has no picture, the problem may be limited to that title or its playback session.
- Try HBO Max on another supported device connected to the same Wi-Fi or wired network.
- Notice whether the problem occurs only in a browser, only in the native TV app, or on every device.
| What you observe | Most likely area to investigate |
|---|---|
| Another device works | The original app, browser, device software, TV display path, or HDMI equipment |
| Every device fails | Network connectivity, account or service conditions, or a wider outage |
| Only one title fails | A title-specific playback problem or temporary session error |
| Sound and video fail only through a receiver, switch, or adapter | HDMI, HDCP, resolution, or the connected equipment chain |
This split is more useful than immediately changing random settings. Max’s own troubleshooting guidance recommends trying another supported device, and the results help distinguish a local device problem from a network or service problem.

- Force-close HBO Max. Close the app completely rather than merely returning to the home screen. On a computer, close the browser tab or window and reopen it.
- Update the app. Install the latest HBO Max or Max app available from your device’s official app store.
- Update the host device. Check for updates to your smart TV, Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, Android TV device, Xbox, phone, tablet, or computer operating system.
- Sign out and sign back in. This refreshes the account session and can clear a failed playback authorization.
- Perform a full restart. Restart the device, not just the app. A full restart can reset a video renderer or a stuck display handshake that continues sending audio.
After each meaningful change, play the same title again. If the picture returns, you have identified a local software or session problem. If it does not, continue with the branch that matches your device.
Fix HBO Max black video in a browser
When audio works but the picture is black at max.com, browser extensions, cookies, site data, browser support, or the computer’s display configuration are common areas to test.
- Use a current supported browser. Update Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge on Windows, or Safari, then retry playback.
- Open a private or incognito window. If video works there, an extension or stored site data is probably interfering.
- Disable extensions temporarily. Start with ad blockers, privacy tools, script blockers, and video-related plug-ins. Re-enable them one at a time after testing to identify the conflict.
- Enable third-party cookies. Max’s browser guidance specifically includes checking this setting. Blocking required cookies can interfere with authentication or playback components.
- Clear HBO Max website data. Clear cookies and cached site data for the service, sign in again, and test.
- Try another supported browser. This is a useful comparison, not just a workaround. If one browser plays video and another does not, the problem is local to the failing browser or its settings.
Check the computer’s resolution and full-screen mode
Max states that the highest resolution supported at max.com is 1080p. If the computer display is configured above 1080p, video may fail in full-screen mode or appear clipped. Temporarily set the display to 1080p or lower, or exit full screen and test in the browser window.
This limitation applies to playback at max.com. It does not by itself prove that a television panel is defective. Also, do not treat disabling browser hardware acceleration as an official HBO Max fix. It can be a secondary diagnostic experiment for a browser graphics problem, but the supported first-line steps are updating the browser, using private mode, disabling extensions, checking cookies, clearing site data, and trying another browser.

Fix HBO Max on a smart TV or streaming device
For native apps, update both HBO Max and the device firmware before reinstalling. If the app has cached bad local data, a restart or cache reset can restore the video surface.
Samsung TV
- Update the HBO Max app and the TV software.
- Sign out of HBO Max.
- Hold the TV remote’s power button to perform a restart rather than leaving the television in standby.
- If the model exposes those controls, clear the app’s cache or data. Clearing data signs you out and removes stored local state.
- Reinstall the app if the picture remains black.
Roku
- Check the network connection and update Roku.
- Update the HBO Max channel.
- Restart the Roku, or unplug it for approximately 20 seconds and reconnect it.
- Remove and re-add the channel when Roku permits that option.
Fire TV
- Update HBO Max and Fire TV.
- Restart the Fire TV device.
- Clear the app cache and, if necessary, app data.
- Reinstall HBO Max after the less disruptive steps fail.
Apple TV
- Update the HBO Max app and tvOS.
- Restart Apple TV fully.
- Delete and reinstall HBO Max if the problem continues.
Android TV
- Update the app and Android TV software.
- Clear HBO Max cache and, if needed, app data.
- Restart the television or player and network equipment.
- Test Ethernet where available, then compare playback on another device.
Xbox
- Check Xbox service status.
- Update the HBO Max app and console software.
- Restart the console.
- Reinstall HBO Max if the video remains unavailable.
Menu names vary by device model and software version. If your television does not offer a cache-clearing control, skip that step rather than changing unrelated settings.
Check the HDMI and HDCP chain
If the sound comes from a TV, soundbar, AV receiver, external streaming player, HDMI switch, capture device, or adapter, the protected video signal may be failing somewhere between the player and the display.
For 4K playback, Max identifies HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2 support as requirements across the connected chain. That can include the television, media player, AV receiver, HDMI cable, adapter, switch, and other connected equipment. A chain that passes audio but cannot complete the protected-video handshake can produce a black picture.

Use this isolation sequence
- Disconnect the receiver, HDMI switch, capture device, or adapter temporarily.
- Connect the streaming player directly to the TV with one HDMI cable.
- Retest at the same resolution.
- If direct connection works, reconnect one component at a time until the failure returns.
- Replace only the suspect cable or component with a known-good, compatible alternative.
If your setup includes older or questionable cabling, a high-speed HDMI cable can be a reasonable replacement or test cable for the 4K path. It is not a universal fix for HBO Max sound-without-video problems: it is relevant mainly when the symptom is limited to an HDMI-connected setup or the service reports a device-setup or HDCP problem.
Do not assume that buying a cable will solve a browser-only black screen, a service outage, or a defective app installation. Bypassing equipment first is the better diagnostic step.
AirPlay and Chromecast troubleshooting
Casting introduces several separate variables: the sending phone or computer, the receiving TV or streaming device, the Wi-Fi connection, the HBO Max app, and the display-protection path.
- Test native playback directly on the TV or receiving device, if HBO Max is available there.
- Test playback on the sending device without casting.
- Restart both devices and confirm they are using the same network.
- Update HBO Max and both device operating systems.
- Retest AirPlay or Chromecast after the direct-playback tests.
If direct playback works but casting produces sound without video, focus on the cast session, receiving device, Wi-Fi path, or HDMI chain rather than repeatedly reinstalling the phone app.

A slow or unstable connection more commonly causes buffering, pauses, reduced quality, or failed starts than a stable audio-only black screen. Still, network testing is worthwhile—especially if several devices fail.

- Pause downloads, game updates, video calls, and other heavy traffic.
- Restart the modem and router.
- Move closer to the Wi-Fi access point or use Ethernet where supported.
- Test another device on the same network.
Max lists 5 Mbps as the minimum download speed for HD streaming and recommends 50 Mbps or more for 4K. Those figures do not guarantee that video will render correctly, and internet speed alone should not be blamed when only one device has sound without a picture.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Clear app data or reinstall HBO Max
Cache clearing is available on Android, Android TV, Fire TV, some Samsung TV models, and selected other platforms. Use it after updating and restarting:
- Open the device’s app settings.
- Select HBO Max or Max.
- Choose Clear cache, if available.
- If necessary, choose Clear data or the equivalent. Expect to sign in again.
- Test playback.
Reinstall only after updates, a full restart, browser isolation or HDMI simplification, and cache clearing have failed. Delete the app, restart the device if practical, and install it again from the platform’s official app store. This removes damaged installation files but also removes local app data and requires another sign-in.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why can I hear HBO Max but see a black screen?
Playback audio has started, but video rendering or the protected display path is failing. The cause may be the app, browser, device software, display resolution, HDMI equipment, HDCP compatibility, or a service-side problem.
Can a bad HDMI cable cause sound but no picture on HBO Max?
It can, particularly when the player is connected through a receiver, switch, adapter, soundbar, or other external equipment. Bypass those components and connect the player directly to the TV first. A compatible high-speed HDMI cable is a reasonable test or replacement, but it is not a universal cure.
Does HBO Max require a certain internet speed?
Max lists 5 Mbps as the minimum download speed for HD streaming and recommends 50 Mbps or more for 4K. Network problems usually produce buffering or quality changes, but they should still be checked when multiple devices fail.
What should I do if HBO Max works in incognito mode?
Disable browser extensions, especially ad blockers, privacy tools, and video plug-ins. Then clear the service’s cookies and website data, check that third-party cookies are enabled, and re-enable extensions individually to identify the conflict.
Will changing my computer display resolution help?
Possibly. Max states that max.com supports up to 1080p. If the computer is set above 1080p, temporarily use a 1080p-or-lower setting or leave full-screen mode and test again.
The Bottom Line
Test another device first. If it works, update and restart the original device, isolate browser extensions or clear app data, and simplify any HDMI chain. If every device fails, check the network and service conditions. Reinstall HBO Max only after those steps, and give support the exact error code and complete device setup when the black screen remains.
