For the October 3–5, 2025 weekend, the strongest pick depends on your mood: Netflix has the dark true-crime dramatization Monster: The Ed Gein Story and new Love Is Blind episodes; Hulu has Chad Powers and Abbott Elementary; and the movie choices range from The Lost Bus and Steve to the digital releases of Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale and Spinal Tap II.
Important date note: This is a historical-to-publication-date roundup, not a current August 2026 streaming guide. Catalog and rental availability must be rechecked.
Editor’s note: This is a time-specific roundup of releases and premieres available in the U.S. during the weekend of October 3–5, 2025. Streaming catalogs, platform branding and digital-purchase listings change, so do not treat the availability notes below as a current August 2026 guide.
The best choice depends on your mood: Monster: The Ed Gein Story is the weekend’s darkest true-crime dramatization, Chad Powers and Abbott Elementary cover comedy, The Lost Bus and Steve offer more serious drama, and Play Dirty supplies the action. There are also new episodes of Love Is Blind, a family-oriented Charlotte’s Web adaptation and two franchise films available to buy digitally.

New TV shows and series
1. Monster: The Ed Gein Story — Netflix
Best for: horror fans and viewers interested in dramatized true crime.
Netflix’s third Monster installment turns to Ed Gein, the Wisconsin murderer and grave robber whose crimes helped inspire fictional horror figures associated with Psycho, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and The Silence of the Lambs. Charlie Hunnam plays Gein, with Laurie Metcalf as his mother. Netflix’s official materials describe the 2025 season as an eight-episode production released on October 3; see the official trailer and Netflix details.
This is a dramatization inspired by real events—not a documentary, police record or definitive historical account. Viewers looking for a fact-checked examination of the case should treat the series as a fictionalized interpretation and consult documentary or archival sources separately.
2. Chad Powers — Hulu
Best for: sports comedy and an underdog comeback story.
Recommended Free Tools
Glen Powell plays Russ Holliday, a disgraced college quarterback who attempts to re-enter the football world by adopting the disguise and identity of “Chad Powers.” The comedy was created by Powell and Michael Waldron, with Peyton and Eli Manning among the executive producers. Hulu’s press information lists its season-one premiere as September 30, 2025, so episodes 1 and 2 were the relevant weekend catch-up opportunity. Check the Hulu show page for the series’ official details.
It is a straightforward choice when you want something lighter than the weekend’s horror and prestige dramas, particularly if the football premise is more appealing than another relationship reality show.
3. Abbott Elementary season 5 — ABC and Hulu
Best for: warm, character-driven workplace comedy.
Season 5 returns to the Philadelphia public-school setting and its established ensemble, led by Quinta Brunson, Tyler James Williams, Janelle James and Sheryl Lee Ralph. The original roundup highlighted the season premiere as a Hulu catch-up option after its ABC broadcast. ABC’s official show page confirms the season and identifies Hulu as a streaming destination.

Unlike the more premise-heavy selections here, Abbott Elementary works best as an easy, familiar ensemble watch. Start here if you want comedy without the sports parody of Chad Powers or the deliberately chaotic mock-rock humor of Spinal Tap II.
4. Love Is Blind season 9 — Netflix
Best for: reality television, relationship drama and social-experiment viewing.
The ninth season moves the dating experiment to Denver. Contestants build emotional connections without seeing one another, then face engagements, cohabitation and the pressures of making a relationship work in ordinary life. During the October 3–5 weekend, episodes 1–6 were available, with Netflix’s Tudum coverage providing the season’s official rollout and later reunion information.
This is the list’s clearest choice for viewers who want a bingeable reality-TV conversation starter rather than a scripted series. Because the show’s episodes and reunion were released in stages, the exact number available depends on the date you are reading this.
5. E.B. White’s Charlotte’s Web — Max
Best for: family viewing, subject to the current rating and catalog listing.
This three-part animated miniseries adapts E. B. White’s children’s classic, with Amy Adams voicing Charlotte and Elijah Wood voicing adult Wilbur. The underlying book is separately identified by Penguin Random House as a classic work of children’s literature; the miniseries should not be confused with the book itself.
The original article used the “HBO Max” label, but the service’s branding and availability can change. Verify the current Max listing, episode count and age guidance before planning a family watch.

Read before or after: Families who want the source material can read Charlotte’s Web by E. B. White. That is a companion recommendation, not a claim that the book is included with the miniseries.
New movies and home-viewing releases
6. Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale — digital purchase, then physical media
Best for: period-drama fans and viewers already invested in the Crawley family.

One-click scans. No signup required.
The third Downton Abbey film is billed as the franchise’s concluding feature. It follows the Crawleys through financial pressure, scandal and the social changes of the 1930s. For the October 3–5 weekend, the film was available to purchase digitally through services including Amazon and Apple rather than as a subscription-streaming selection.
Universal Pictures Home Entertainment announced digital purchase and rental availability beginning September 30, 2025, followed by 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray releases on November 11, 2025. That makes this the strongest choice on the list for viewers who want to own a franchise finale for repeat viewing rather than rent it for one night.
Own it: Look for the Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale DVD, Blu-ray or 4K Ultra HD edition if you prefer a permanent copy. The disc is an ownership option and is not required to watch the film through a digital purchase.
7. Spinal Tap II: The End Continues — premium video-on-demand
Best for: mockumentary comedy and fans of fictional rock-star excess.
David St. Hubbins, Nigel Tufnel and Derek Smalls reunite for another mock-rock farewell adventure, with Rob Reiner returning as director and documentarian Marty DiBergi. The film was positioned as a premium digital purchase during this weekend rather than a standard subscription title. Amazon’s official editorial coverage connects the sequel with the original This Is Spinal Tap and its Prime Video availability.
The ideal order is the original film first, followed by the sequel, since the humor depends on the band’s history and personalities. Viewers planning a double feature should check the current service listing before assuming that both films are included at the same price or under the same subscription.
Franchise catch-up: Consider This Is Spinal Tap and Spinal Tap II home video as a double-feature option, but verify the edition and current purchase format before ordering.
8. Play Dirty — Prime Video
Best for: crime, action and heist movies.
Mark Wahlberg stars as Parker, an antihero drawn from Donald E. Westlake’s crime novels written under the Richard Stark pen name. The film was the roundup’s principal action selection and was presented as a Prime Video watch.

Because Prime Video titles can move between subscription inclusion, rental and purchase tiers, confirm the film’s current listing in your region. That distinction matters: “available on Prime Video” does not always mean “included with a Prime membership.”
9. The Lost Bus — Apple TV+
Best for: survival drama and emotionally intense real-world disaster stories.
Directed by Paul Greengrass, The Lost Bus dramatizes the 2018 Camp Fire in California. Matthew McConaughey plays bus driver Kevin McKay, who tries to evacuate children and their teacher as the wildfire advances; America Ferrera also stars. Apple’s official press materials identify the film, its director and its leading cast.
This is a high-stakes evacuation story rather than a documentary reconstruction. Its real-world inspiration gives the premise added weight, but viewers should not assume that every character or event is a literal record of the 2018 fire.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →10. Steve — Netflix
Best for: intimate, contained drama rather than spectacle.
Cillian Murphy plays the headteacher of a reform school during one difficult day, while Jay Lycurgo plays a troubled student at the center of the story. The film’s focus is the pressure inside the institution and the relationship between its adults and students, making it a markedly quieter selection than Monster, Play Dirty or The Lost Bus.
Steve should be approached as a character drama. The premise does not establish that it is a documentary or a direct account of a particular real school.

As with Charlotte’s Web, the original weekend roundup used the HBO Max-era naming convention in places, while the current service is branded Max. Check the present catalog and rental options before searching, since platform placement is especially liable to change after a film’s initial home-viewing window.

What “streaming now” meant in the original roundup
The phrase referred to the October 3–5, 2025 publication window. It included several different release models:
- Subscription streaming: Netflix, Hulu, Max, Prime Video and Apple TV+ titles were presented according to the services carrying them at that time.
- Premium video-on-demand: Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale and Spinal Tap II were digital purchase or rental choices, not necessarily subscription-included titles.
- New episodes: Chad Powers, Abbott Elementary and Love Is Blind were at different points in their release schedules.
- Catalog volatility: Max and Prime Video availability, subscription inclusion and platform names can change without changing a film’s original release date.
For a current viewing decision, search the title directly in the service you use and confirm whether the result is included, available to rent or available to buy. The durable dates here are the 2025 premieres and Universal’s announced November 11, 2025 physical-media date—not the claim that every title remains on the same service today.
