TikTok’s interface changes by device, account, region, and rollout, so the same function may appear under Sound, Audio, Edit, or Advanced editing. The two practical routes are TikTok for speed and CapCut for more deliberate audio work.
Key takeaways
- TikTok’s native editor is usually enough to select a sound, trim its usable section, balance music against original audio, preview the result, and save a draft or post.
- CapCut is the better route when you need layered audio, detailed timing, voiceover, noise reduction, sound effects, fades, or beat-synchronized cuts.
- Music should support the video without masking speech, creating abrupt volume changes, or starting and ending at the wrong points.
- TikTok recommends its Commercial Music Library for posts that promote a brand, product, or service.
- A wireless lavalier microphone can improve dialogue recorded for a new video, but a microphone is not required to edit the sound of an existing clip.
How do I edit the sound on a TikTok video?
To edit sound for a TikTok video, record or upload the clip, open TikTok’s Sound or editing controls, choose or add audio, trim the section you want, balance the original sound with music or voiceover, preview the entire video, and then post it or save it as a draft. Use CapCut when TikTok’s controls are not precise enough.
TikTok’s exact labels and controls can differ by device, account, country, and feature rollout. Look for equivalent options under Sound, Audio, Edit, or Advanced editing. TikTok’s official editing, posting, and deleting guidance covers the platform’s general recording, uploading, editing, and draft workflow.

How do you edit sound in TikTok?
Native TikTok editing is the quickest choice for a simple post. Record a new clip or upload one from your device, then use the sound and editing controls to choose music or another available sound source.
1. Record or upload the video
Start a new TikTok and record in the app, or use the upload option to select an existing video. TikTok organizes its creation tools around recording, uploading, sounds, editing, and posting, but the order and button names can change between the mobile app, TikTok Studio, and web upload experience.
2. Add or change the sound
Open Sound or the equivalent audio control and select the music, original sound, or other available audio source. If the video already contains useful speech or location sound, do not assume that adding music should replace the original track; the best mix depends on what the viewer needs to hear.
3. Trim the sound
Choose the part of the track that matches the visual action. For a talking video, select a section that leaves room for the opening words and does not end with an awkward musical cutoff. For a montage, align the strongest musical change with a visual transition where possible.

- Small but Mighty - The DJI Mic Mini lavalier microphone transmitter is small and ultralight, weighing only 10 g, [1] making it comfortable to wear, discreet, and aesthetically pleasing on-camera.
- Detail-Rich Sound - Mic Mini wireless microphones delivers high-quality audio. A 400m max transmission range [2] ensures stable recording, even in bustling outdoor environments like a busy street. 48kHz sampling & 120 dB SPL for full, clear sound, 48h battery life with charging case [3].
- Extended Battery, More Recording Time - Mic Mini wireless lavalier microphone with Charging Case offers up to 48 hours of battery life, [3] ideal for long trips, interviews, livestreaming and other intensive usage scenarios.
- DJI Ecosystem Direct Connection - With DJI OsmoAudio, a transmitter can connect to Osmo Nano, Osmo 360, Osmo Mobile 7P, Osmo Action 5 Pro, Osmo Action 4, or Osmo Pocket 3 without a receiver, delivering premium audio.
- Powerful Noise Cancelling - 2 noise cancellation levels are available—Basic is ideal for quiet indoor settings, while Strong excels in noisy environments to give you clear vocals. [8]
4. Balance music and original audio
Keep spoken words intelligible by lowering the music whenever dialogue, narration, or an important natural sound is the focus. A visual-first clip can give music and effects more prominence, but the soundtrack should still avoid sudden jumps, clipped speech, or an abrupt start.
- Use original audio as the primary layer when the video depends on explanation or conversation.
- Lower background music under speech rather than trying to make both tracks equally loud.
- Use sound effects at the moment the visual action occurs, not several frames before or after it.
- Listen through the complete video, including the first and last seconds, before publishing.
5. Preview, save, or post
Play the entire edited video and check that the selected sound begins at the intended moment, dialogue remains clear, and the ending does not cut off unexpectedly. On the post page, save a draft if the video is not ready to publish, or continue through TikTok’s posting flow when the result is complete.
How do I add music to a TikTok after recording?
Upload or record the video first, then open TikTok’s Sound, Audio, or equivalent editing control to select music. After adding the track, adjust the usable section and balance the music against the clip’s original audio before previewing the post.
The exact post-recording controls are not identical for every TikTok account or device. If TikTok shows only limited control over the music’s timing or level, use an external editor for the mix and upload the completed video instead.
How do I lower the music on TikTok?
Open the video’s audio or volume controls and reduce the music level relative to the original sound or voiceover. If the current TikTok interface does not provide separate controls, lower the music in CapCut before exporting the video to TikTok.

The correct level is determined by intelligibility rather than a fixed number. Say the most important line while previewing the video: if the words require concentration or the listener has to increase device volume, the music is probably too prominent.
How do I edit TikTok audio in CapCut?
To edit TikTok audio in CapCut, import the video, add music or another audio file to the timeline, trim the audio, adjust volume and optional processing, add a voiceover or sound effects, preview the mix, and export or share the result to TikTok. CapCut documents this audio-to-video workflow and its TikTok editing workflow.

- Import the video. Add the recorded or downloaded clip to a new project.
- Add music or another audio file. Place the track on the timeline so its start and end can be compared with the video.
- Trim the audio. Cut away unused sections and place the useful musical phrase under the relevant visual sequence.
- Set levels. Reduce music beneath dialogue and check for volume jumps between the original clip, music, voiceover, and effects.
- Apply processing carefully. Depending on the platform and account, CapCut may offer fades, speed or pitch changes, noise reduction, vocal isolation, voice enhancement, or loudness normalization. Feature access can vary by platform, region, subscription level, account, and rollout.
- Record or add a voiceover. Keep the recording position consistent and use a quiet space. Apply only as much cleanup as needed; excessive processing can make speech sound unnatural.
- Add sound effects. Place each effect at the matching visual event, then adjust its timing, length, and level. CapCut’s official sound-effects guidance describes these timeline controls.
- Preview the full mix. Check the opening, transitions, speech, loudest moments, and ending on the device or headphones your audience is likely to use.
- Export or share to TikTok. Review the exported file again in TikTok, because the final upload and platform audio may not behave exactly like the editing preview.
When is CapCut better than TikTok’s editor?
CapCut is better when the video needs separate control of original audio and music, a recorded voiceover, noise reduction, several precisely timed effects, beat-synchronized cuts, or a reusable project for multiple platforms. TikTok’s native editor remains more convenient when the task is simply selecting a platform sound and making a basic post.
CapCut’s Auto Cut is an optional shortcut for montage editing. CapCut describes Auto Cut as an AI feature that can trim and segment footage and synchronize edits to an audio track, script, or beat pattern. CapCut’s help documentation says Auto Cut is available on mobile and desktop but not CapCut Web at the time of that guidance; region and rollout differences can affect availability. Read CapCut’s current Auto Cut help page before relying on the feature.
Automatic beat matching can reduce manual timing, but it does not guarantee a polished edit. Review every proposed cut and move or remove transitions that do not support the story, action, or spoken explanation.

How do you improve voice quality before editing?
Record in a quiet space, keep the microphone and speaker at a consistent distance, and avoid adding more noise reduction than necessary. Better source audio reduces the amount of processing required later.
A wireless lavalier microphone is an optional upgrade for recording cleaner dialogue or a voiceover; it is not needed to edit an existing video. Official documentation describes the Shure MoveMic as a wireless lavalier system for video and audio recording, while RØDE positions Wireless ME for video production and mobile recording. Check the phone connector, receiver, operating-system support, and included adapters before buying because no single microphone is guaranteed to work with every phone.
Can I use copyrighted music in a business TikTok?
Business and branded TikToks require a separate music-rights check. TikTok states, “When you post content that promotes a brand, product or service, we recommend that you only use music from our Commercial Music Library (CML), as it’s pre-cleared for commercial use.” Read TikTok’s commercial music policy for the current rules.
TikTok explains that a license for music outside the Commercial Music Library does not necessarily cover commercial use. For an original sound or externally sourced track, the creator must confirm that the post contains no copyright-protected music or that all necessary licenses have been obtained and paid for.
TikTok’s account guidance says the general music library is restricted to personal entertainment use for Business Accounts, while the Commercial Music Library is the commercial-use option. A sponsored post or a post promoting a product or service should therefore use appropriately cleared music, retain licensing records for externally obtained tracks, enable TikTok’s content-disclosure setting when required, and run the available copyright check before publishing.
TikTok Studio may offer a check for copyright infringement in uploaded videos before posting. TikTok notes that creator tools and availability can vary by experience and region; consult the platform’s TikTok Studio and creator-tools guidance rather than assuming that every account has the same check.

Why is my TikTok sound muted?
A TikTok sound may be muted because the audio is unavailable in the viewer’s location, the sound was removed or restricted, the video uses music without the required permission, or the account and post type do not allow the selected music. For branded content, recheck the Commercial Music Library and the license for every imported track.
First preview the uploaded post and identify whether the entire sound or only one track is missing. If the original voice is still present, replace or remove the restricted music and rebalance the remaining audio. If the platform offers a copyright check in TikTok Studio, run it before publishing again. Do not describe music as “copyright-free” simply because the track appears in an editing app; confirm that the track is cleared for the intended TikTok account and use.
Does sound matter on TikTok?
Sound is important enough to treat as part of the story rather than a final decoration. According to TikTok’s 2023 Newsroom article, 88% of TikTok users said sound was essential to the TikTok experience. The same TikTok-published 2023 figures reported that 68% remembered a brand better when its videos featured songs they liked. These are platform-published figures, not independent scientific evidence; the practical takeaway is to make speech, music, and effects intentional and understandable.

Final sound-editing checklist
- The chosen music or original sound begins at the intended point.
- Dialogue and voiceover remain intelligible over the music.
- Sound effects line up with the visual action and do not overwhelm speech.
- The first and last seconds contain no accidental silence, clipping, or abrupt cutoff.
- The complete video has been previewed after the final mix and again after upload.
- Commercial or sponsored content uses music cleared for the intended use, with licensing records retained where applicable.
- The phone, microphone, adapter, and editing app are compatible if new voiceover is being recorded.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why can’t I find the sound or volume controls on TikTok?
TikTok’s exact controls vary by device, account, region, and rollout. Look under Sound, Audio, Edit, or Advanced editing; if separate volume or trimming controls are unavailable, use CapCut or another external editor.
Why is my TikTok sound muted after posting?
TikTok may mute audio because a track is restricted, removed, unavailable in a location, or not licensed for the account or post type. Replace the track, verify the Commercial Music Library for branded content, and use TikTok Studio’s copyright check when it is available.
Should I edit TikTok sound in TikTok or CapCut?
For a simple post, TikTok is faster. CapCut is the better choice for separate audio layers, precise trimming, voiceover, noise reduction, multiple sound effects, or beat-synchronized cuts.
The Bottom Line
Use TikTok’s native tools for fast sound selection, trimming, balancing, and posting. Move to CapCut when you need layered audio, voiceover, noise reduction, detailed effects, or beat-based timing, and always verify music rights separately for business or branded content.
