MrDeepFakes is shutting down for good: the prominent deepfake-porn marketplace announced a permanent closure in early May 2025 after a critical service provider terminated service and data was lost. The operators said they would not relaunch, but they did not identify the provider, so the precise cause and legal responsibility remain unconfirmed.
The closure mattered because MrDeepFakes had become a large archive, marketplace, and community for synthetic non-consensual sexual imagery. Research measured tens of thousands of videos and more than a billion views before the shutdown, while later evidence suggests that removing one hub may disrupt access without eliminating the wider abuse ecosystem.
Key takeaways
- MrDeepFakes announced a permanent shutdown in early May 2025 and said it would not relaunch.
- The operators blamed a critical service provider terminating service and the resulting data loss, but they did not identify the provider or explain the technical failure.
- A 2025 USENIX Security study measured 43,000 sexual deepfake videos depicting 3,800 people and receiving more than 1.5 billion views as of November 2023.
- The shutdown followed Congress’s passage of the TAKE IT DOWN Act, but the available evidence does not prove that the signed law directly caused the closure.
- Later research suggests that shutting down one major hub can disrupt access while also displacing or redistributing activity to other forums.
What happened to MrDeepFakes?
MrDeepFakes announced that it was permanently closing in early May 2025. The announcement was reported by NPR on May 6, 2025, and followed contemporaneous reporting that a service provider had withdrawn support.
The operators attributed the closure to a service-provider termination and data loss. The operators did not publicly name the critical service provider, and the cited reporting does not establish how the data was lost or whether the provider’s action resulted from a particular legal order.

“A critical service provider has terminated service permanently. Data loss has made it impossible to continue operation.”
— MrDeepFakes shutdown notice, reproduced in CBS News coverage
The notice also removed uncertainty about the operators’ stated plans. It said, “We will not be relaunching. Any website claiming this is fake.” The notice warned that the domain would eventually expire and that the operators were not responsible for future use of the domain. Readers should therefore treat claims that the original service has relaunched as unverified rather than assuming that a similarly named website is authentic.
| Question | What the evidence establishes | What remains unconfirmed |
|---|---|---|
| Did the site announce a closure? | Yes. The announcement became public in early May 2025. | The notice did not provide a detailed incident report. |
| Was the closure described as permanent? | Yes. The operators said they would not relaunch. | A future site using the name would not establish that the original operators returned. |
| What caused the closure? | The operators cited permanent termination by a critical service provider and data loss. | The provider, the precise data-loss mechanism, and any direct legal trigger were not publicly established. |
What was MrDeepFakes?
MrDeepFakes was a prominent website and marketplace for synthetic non-consensual sexual imagery. Visitors could view celebrity deepfakes, buy and sell material, and participate in discussions about creating such content. The 2025 USENIX Security research on the MrDeepFakes marketplace characterized the platform as a particularly prominent and mainstream hub in this ecosystem.
The research also found little enforcement of the platform’s stated restrictions. That distinction matters: a site’s written rules do not demonstrate that the site effectively prevented prohibited uploads or requests.
How large was the MrDeepFakes marketplace?
According to Catherine Han, Anne Li, Deepak Kumar, and Zakir Durumeric’s 2025 USENIX Security study, measurements of MrDeepFakes as of November 2023 identified 43,000 sexual deepfake videos depicting 3,800 individuals and receiving more than 1.5 billion views. The figures describe the site at that measurement point, not the site’s final inventory before its 2025 shutdown.

| Measure | Finding | Scope and source |
|---|---|---|
| Videos | 43,000 sexual deepfake videos | Measured as of November 2023 by Han, Li, Kumar, and Durumeric in the 2025 USENIX Security study |
| Depicted individuals | 3,800 people | Measured as of November 2023 by the same 2025 USENIX Security study |
| Views | More than 1.5 billion views | Measured as of November 2023 by the same 2025 USENIX Security study |
| Gender distribution | 95.3% of targeted individuals were women actors and musicians, accounting for 88% of posted videos | 2025 USENIX Security study; November 2023 site measurement |
| Abusive scenes | 2.4% of uploaded videos included scenes of rape, abuse, or humiliation | 2025 USENIX Security study; November 2023 site measurement |
The scale helps explain why the closure drew attention beyond the disappearance of a single website. MrDeepFakes was not merely a small collection of isolated files; it functioned as an archive, marketplace, and discussion community. At the same time, the November 2023 research snapshot should not be misreported as a precise count of everything present when the site went offline.
Was MrDeepFakes shut down because of the TAKE IT DOWN Act?
The available evidence does not prove that the signed TAKE IT DOWN Act directly shut down MrDeepFakes. The closure announcement appeared in early May 2025, while President Donald J. Trump signed the legislation on May 19, 2025, so the presidential signing occurred after the shutdown notice.
| Event | Date | What it means for the MrDeepFakes timeline |
|---|---|---|
| Congress passed the TAKE IT DOWN Act | April 2025 | Legislative passage preceded the public shutdown announcement. |
| MrDeepFakes announced its closure | Early May 2025 | The operators cited a service-provider termination and data loss. |
| President signed S. 146 | May 19, 2025 | The measure became Public Law 119-12, after the shutdown notice had appeared. |
The legislation is still relevant context. The law addresses certain intentional online publication of intimate visual depictions without consent, including computer-generated digital forgeries, and requires covered platforms to establish notice-and-removal procedures. The Congressional Research Service analysis of the TAKE IT DOWN Act explains the law’s scope and limits.
The safest conclusion is that MrDeepFakes closed during an intense period of legal, political, activist, and platform scrutiny, immediately after Congress passed the legislation. The evidence does not justify the stronger claim that the enacted law directly forced the service provider to terminate support or directly caused the site to disappear.
Is MrDeepFakes coming back?
No. The operators’ shutdown notice said that MrDeepFakes would not relaunch and warned that websites claiming to be the service were fake. That is the operators’ stated position, not proof that no one will create an imitation, mirror, clone, or unrelated site using a similar name.
The original domain was also described as eventually expiring, with the operators disclaiming responsibility for future use. Because the shutdown notice did not authorize a successor service, a site or account claiming to represent MrDeepFakes should not automatically be treated as an official return.

What did the shutdown actually change?
The shutdown removed a highly visible searchable archive, marketplace, and community hub, which made the material less accessible at that location. The shutdown did not remove the underlying generation tools, demand, or online communities that made the material possible.
Henry Ajder, an AI and deepfake expert who spoke to CBS News, called the closure “a moment to celebrate” and described MrDeepFakes as the “central node” of deepfake abuse. Ajder also warned that related communities could move to less mainstream platforms such as Telegram. CBS News reported Ajder’s reaction and warning.
| Effect | What the shutdown may accomplish | What it cannot establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
| Disruption | Removes one major searchable archive, marketplace, and discussion hub. | It does not show that every copy or channel has disappeared. |
| Displacement | May push users or creators toward private channels, other forums, or less visible services. | It does not prove that all activity moved to one particular platform. |
| Legal deterrence | Legal and platform consequences may increase risks for publishers and services. | It does not prove that the TAKE IT DOWN Act caused this specific closure. |
| Persistence | Underlying tools, demand, and communities can remain after a major site disappears. | One shutdown cannot demonstrate that synthetic sexual abuse declined overall. |
Did the shutdown stop deepfake pornography?
No. The shutdown stopped one prominent distribution hub, but it did not establish that synthetic sexual abuse ended or even declined across the internet.
A 2026 academic follow-up study examined the combined intervention of the TAKE IT DOWN Act and the MrDeepFakes shutdown across three other forums. The study found increased sharing or requests for synthetic non-consensual explicit imagery in some settings, with substantial variation between platforms.

The careful interpretation is that deplatforming and regulatory signals may change where and when material is produced and shared, rather than eliminating the broader problem on their own. The study supports terms such as “suggests,” “was associated with,” and “may have redistributed,” not the claim that all activity moved elsewhere.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the broader crackdown still continuing?
Yes, later enforcement shows that the policy and legal response continued beyond the MrDeepFakes closure. On June 12, 2026, the U.S. Department of Justice announced the seizure of CFAKE.com and SOCFAKE.com, domains that authorities said were used to publish non-consensual sexually explicit digital forgeries. The DOJ said the warrants relied on probable cause of violations of the TAKE IT DOWN Act. The Justice Department announcement concerns those later domains, not proof of the cause of the MrDeepFakes shutdown.

This distinction is important for understanding the story. A later domain seizure can demonstrate active enforcement of the law, but it cannot retroactively establish that a service provider terminated MrDeepFakes because of the law.
What remains unknown about the closure?
- The identity of the critical service provider was not established by the shutdown notice or the strongest contemporaneous coverage used for this account.
- The precise internal mechanism of the reported data loss was not publicly documented in the cited sources.
- The direct causal relationship between the TAKE IT DOWN Act and the service-provider termination remains unproven.
- The disappearance of one site does not establish that synthetic sexual abuse declined overall.
- Investigative accounts that discuss alleged operator identities should not be treated as court findings unless a court has made such a finding.
Where can people find rights information after intimate images are shared without consent?
The resource is separate from the MrDeepFakes shutdown. The closure does not guarantee relief for every person whose image appeared on the site, and the existence of a takedown or seizure does not by itself resolve the legal, privacy, and personal-safety consequences for affected people.
Frequently Asked Questions
Did MrDeepFakes shut down for good?
Yes. MrDeepFakes announced a permanent shutdown in early May 2025 and said, “We will not be relaunching.” The operators also warned that websites claiming to be the service were fake, although imitation or clone sites could still appear.
Was MrDeepFakes closed directly by the TAKE IT DOWN Act?
No direct causal link has been proven. The shutdown notice appeared in early May 2025, while President Donald J. Trump signed the TAKE IT DOWN Act on May 19, 2025; the operators cited a critical service provider and data loss without identifying the provider.
Did the MrDeepFakes shutdown stop deepfake pornography?
No. The closure removed one prominent marketplace and distribution hub, but later research across three other forums found evidence consistent with activity being redistributed or increasing in some settings. That study was not a census of the entire internet.

The Bottom Line
Bottom line: MrDeepFakes did announce a permanent shutdown in early May 2025 and said it would not relaunch. The operators blamed a critical service provider and data loss, but the provider and direct legal cause were not established. The shutdown disrupted one major hub; later research suggests that disruption alone did not eliminate synthetic sexual abuse and may have displaced some activity.
