Steven Tyler’s “on the mend” update after his larynx fracture meant that his condition was improving, not that he had fully recovered. The injury caused vocal-cord damage and bleeding during an Aerosmith show in September 2023. Aerosmith later confirmed the fracture, then retired from touring in August 2024 after saying full vocal recovery was impossible.

Tyler first disclosed vocal-cord damage and bleeding, followed by doctors’ orders not to sing for 30 days. Aerosmith then said his doctor had confirmed a fractured larynx requiring ongoing care. Tyler’s later comments were encouraging but limited, and the band’s August 2024 announcement ultimately changed the outlook for live performances.

Key takeaways

  • Steven Tyler suffered vocal-cord damage and bleeding during an Aerosmith performance in September 2023.
  • Aerosmith later said Tyler’s doctor had confirmed a fractured larynx that required ongoing care.
  • Tyler described his throat as “on the mend” in November 2023 and February 2024, but he did not announce a complete recovery.
  • On August 2, 2024, Aerosmith said a full recovery from Tyler’s vocal injury was not possible and retired from touring.
  • A later Aerosmith music release does not establish that Tyler’s voice medically recovered.

Is Steven Tyler on the mend after his larynx fracture?

Steven Tyler was improving when he said his throat was “on the mend,” but the statement did not mean that he had fully recovered. Tyler’s injury began with vocal-cord damage and bleeding during an Aerosmith show in September 2023. Aerosmith later confirmed a fractured larynx, and the band announced in August 2024 that a full recovery was not possible for touring.

As of August 14, 2026, no newer authoritative medical statement confirming full recovery was located in the sources reviewed. The most reliable public account is therefore a progression from serious injury, to partial improvement, to Aerosmith’s decision to retire from the touring stage.

What happened to Steven Tyler’s larynx?

Steven Tyler injured his voice during an Aerosmith performance in September 2023. In an official announcement dated September 11, 2023, Tyler said he had sustained vocal-cord damage during the preceding Saturday’s show and that the injury had caused bleeding. Doctors ordered Tyler not to sing for 30 days while the band postponed performances.

“I’m heartbroken to say I have received strict doctor’s orders not to sing for the next thirty days. I sustained vocal cord damage during Saturday’s show that led to subsequent bleeding. We’ll need to postpone a few dates so that we can come back and give you the performance you deserve.”

— Steven Tyler, in Aerosmith’s September 11, 2023 announcement.

Aerosmith subsequently provided a more serious description of the injury. The band said Tyler’s doctor had confirmed that, in addition to vocal-cord damage, Tyler had fractured his larynx and required ongoing care.

“His doctor has confirmed that in addition to the damage to his vocal cords, he fractured his larynx which requires ongoing care.”

— Aerosmith, September 2023.

The public announcements did not provide a complete medical assessment, a detailed treatment plan, or a prognosis for Tyler’s speaking or singing voice. Those limits matter: the available information supports reporting the injury and its consequences, but not diagnosing Tyler or predicting his current vocal ability.

When did Steven Tyler say his throat was “on the mend”?

Tyler used the phrase twice in public updates, first in November 2023 and again in February 2024. Both comments indicated improvement, but neither statement confirmed that the fractured larynx or vocal-cord injury had completely healed.

What did Steven Tyler mean by “on the mend”?

“On the mend” means that Tyler was experiencing improvement, not that doctors had declared him fully healed or fit to resume touring. Tyler’s November 2023 post referred to his throat improving while he worked on Aerosmith remixes. At a February 4, 2024 Jam for Janie Grammys viewing party, Tyler similarly said his throat was better but still recovering.

The distinction became important because the public updates came before the band’s final touring decision. A person can improve from an injury without regaining the level of vocal function, endurance, reliability, or medical clearance required for a demanding concert schedule. The available reporting does not identify which specific medical limitation prevented a full touring recovery.

Why did Aerosmith stop touring?

Aerosmith stopped touring because the band concluded that Tyler could not make a full recovery from the vocal injury. On August 2, 2024, after months of efforts to restore Tyler’s voice, Aerosmith announced that “a full recovery from his vocal injury is not possible” and that the band would retire from the touring stage.

“Sadly, it is clear, that a full recovery from his vocal injury is not possible.”

“We have made a heartbreaking and difficult, but necessary, decision – as a band of brothers – to retire from the touring stage.”

— Aerosmith, August 2, 2024.

The retirement did not happen immediately after the September 2023 injury. Tyler first reported improvement, and Aerosmith spent months pursuing efforts to restore his voice. The August 2024 announcement was the later, decisive update about the band’s ability to tour—not a claim that Tyler had never improved.

Will Aerosmith tour again?

Aerosmith’s official August 2, 2024 announcement said the band was retiring from the touring stage because a full recovery from Tyler’s vocal injury was not possible. On the public evidence reviewed through August 14, 2026, there is no authoritative announcement reversing that touring decision.

Aerosmith continued to have music-related activity after the touring retirement. On September 17, 2025, the band announced the One More Time EP with Yungblud. That release announcement demonstrates continued catalog or recording activity, but it does not establish that Tyler’s voice recovered medically or that Aerosmith could safely return to a full concert tour.

Aerosmith’s history also explains why the touring announcement was significant. According to the band’s official 2024 statement, Aerosmith originated in 1970 and had built a career spanning more than five decades. Those historical facts describe the band’s legacy; they do not change the medical uncertainty surrounding Tyler’s current voice.

Does later Aerosmith music activity prove that Steven Tyler recovered?

No. A music release, remix project, studio appearance, or catalog announcement is not medical evidence that Tyler’s vocal injury fully healed. Tyler’s November 2023 studio post showed that he was working on Aerosmith remixes, and Aerosmith later announced new music, but neither event confirmed his ability to sing live or complete a tour.

The careful conclusion is that Tyler’s public comments documented improvement, while Aerosmith’s later official statement documented the inability to achieve a full recovery for touring purposes. The available sources do not justify a stronger claim about his present medical condition.

How can fans revisit Aerosmith’s music?

Fans who want a physical reminder of Aerosmith’s catalog can look for Aerosmith Greatest Hits vinyl and related greatest-hits editions. In an August 18, 2023 catalog announcement, Aerosmith listed several formats, including a Super Deluxe 4LP on color vinyl, a numbered 2LP on 180g black vinyl, a deluxe 4LP, a standard 2LP, a single LP, and CD editions.

The same official announcement described the Super Deluxe edition as containing 44 tracks from Aerosmith’s five-decade career, including “Dream On,” “Walk This Way,” and “Sweet Emotion.” Edition names, stock, prices, and retailer availability can change, so readers should verify those details before buying. A vinyl record is a way to revisit the band’s music—not evidence of or treatment for Tyler’s injury.

For the later release, Aerosmith’s official announcement described an Aerosmith Store-exclusive version of the One More Time EP with Yungblud. That release is a separate music-commerce development and should not be confused with a health update.
