The Christmas pickle tradition is a Christmas-tree scavenger hunt in which a family hides a pickle-shaped ornament among the branches. The first person to find it may receive an extra present, good luck for the coming year, or the honor of handing out gifts. Its German origin is widely claimed but historically unproven.

The custom is easy to recognize but difficult to trace. Families play different versions, and the best-known origin stories—a Civil War prisoner and a Saint Nicholas rescue—are legends rather than verified history. The strongest explanation links imported German glass ornaments with American retail folklore.

Key takeaways

  • The Christmas pickle tradition is a hidden pickle-shaped ornament game played around a Christmas tree.
  • The first person to find the ornament may receive an extra present, good luck, or the job of handing out gifts.
  • The evidence does not establish the Christmas pickle as an ancient or widespread German custom.
  • German-made glass fruit-and-vegetable ornaments and American retail storytelling offer the most plausible explanation for the tradition’s development.
  • The Civil War prisoner story and the Saint Nicholas pickle-barrel story are legends, not verified origins.

What is the Christmas pickle tradition?

The Christmas pickle tradition is a Christmas-tree scavenger hunt. After a family decorates the tree, someone hides a pickle-shaped ornament among the branches. On Christmas morning or during another holiday gathering, family members search for it. The first finder may receive a small present, good luck for the coming year, or a special role such as distributing the gifts.

The rules are informal. Some families let children search alone, while others include adults. Some hide the ornament in the tree every year; others change the hiding place when younger players become too skilled. The reward can be material, symbolic, or simply the satisfaction of winning.

Is the Christmas pickle actually German?

The Christmas pickle is often presented as an old German custom, but the available evidence does not support that claim as established history. Germany’s Federal Foreign Office explains that many Germans are unfamiliar with the practice and suggests that American imports of German-made fruit-and-vegetable ornaments may have helped create the association.

The German Federal Foreign Office’s 2018 explanation states: “Even though most people here assume that the Christmas Pickle is a German tradition, many Germans have not even heard of the so-called Christmas Pickle.” The statement comes from the Consulate General of Germany in Toronto and is a useful warning against describing the custom as a normal nationwide German practice.

According to a Forbes report on a 2016 YouGov survey, 91% of German respondents had never heard of the Christmas pickle tradition, while 2% said they practiced it. Those figures do not prove that the custom was invented in the United States, but they make the claim of an old, widespread German tradition difficult to defend.

Where did the Christmas pickle tradition come from?

The most defensible explanation is that the Christmas pickle developed as an American or German-American custom around imported glass ornaments and later folklore. The exact first person, retailer, or year responsible has not been established.

During the late nineteenth century, German manufacturers exported glass ornaments shaped like fruits and vegetables to the United States. A retailer or ornament seller may have attached an appealing German-tradition story to an unusual pickle-shaped decoration. A sales explanation could then have become a family game and, over time, a tradition described as older and more German than the evidence shows.

The German Federal Foreign Office specifically points to Woolworth’s importation of German fruit-and-nut or fruit-and-vegetable ornaments during the 1880s as one possible source of the association. The USC Digital Folklore Archives’ family testimony also treats the German-origin account cautiously and discusses the possibility of “fakelore”: a story attached to a practice that is repeated as traditional without reliable proof of its origin.

“American tradition with a disputed German backstory” is therefore more accurate than “ancient German tradition.” The custom itself is real for the families who play it; the historical explanation attached to the custom remains uncertain.

What are the stories about the Christmas pickle’s origin?

Several stories attempt to explain why a pickle ornament is hidden on a Christmas tree. None of the best-known stories has been verified as the documented beginning of the modern game.

Origin story What it claims How to describe it
German glass ornament and Woolworth explanation Imported German fruit-and-vegetable ornaments, combined with American retail storytelling, helped produce the custom. Most plausible explanation, but not a proven identification of the inventor.
Civil War prisoner story A starving German-born or Bavarian prisoner supposedly asked a guard for a pickle, survived, and later hung one on a Christmas tree. Memorable but unverified legend.
Pickle barrel and Saint Nicholas story Two boys were allegedly trapped in a pickle barrel and rescued or revived by Saint Nicholas. Folk explanation for luck or rescue, not a documented origin of the tree game.
Good-luck interpretation Finding the pickle is said to bring good fortune for the coming year. A family meaning or modern variation, not proof of an ancient custom.

The Civil War prisoner legend

One version says that a German-born or Bavarian soldier held as a prisoner during the American Civil War was starving. The prisoner supposedly asked a guard for a pickle, survived after receiving one, and later began hanging a pickle on the Christmas tree. The story explains the ornament’s supposed meaning, but no evidence in the available research verifies that it created the tradition.

The pickle-barrel and Saint Nicholas legend

Another account says that an innkeeper trapped two boys in a pickle barrel. Saint Nicholas supposedly found and rescued them, creating an association between pickles, Christmas, rescue, and good luck. The story is folklore rather than established evidence that families began hiding pickle ornaments because of the event.

How do families play the Christmas pickle game?

Families usually play the Christmas pickle game by hiding one pickle-shaped ornament in the decorated tree and awarding a chosen prize to the first person who finds it.

  1. Choose an ornament. Select a pickle-shaped ornament made from glass, plastic, wood, felt, or another suitable material.
  2. Decorate the tree. Add the ordinary decorations before hiding the pickle.
  3. Hide the pickle. Place the ornament among the branches where it is challenging but possible to find. Avoid putting a fragile ornament within easy reach of toddlers or pets.
  4. Set the search time. Christmas morning is traditional for many households, but a family gathering or holiday party works too.
  5. Define the reward. The finder may receive an extra small gift, good luck, bragging rights, or the job of distributing presents.

The USC Digital Folklore Archives records a family that eventually hid the pickle somewhere other than the tree because the children had become too good at finding it. That example shows why the custom has no single official rulebook: families adapt the challenge to their own household.

What kind of ornament do you need?

A pickle-shaped Christmas-tree ornament is the only essential item. The material and design depend on the age of the players, the desired difficulty, and whether the ornament is meant to become a keepsake.

Ornament choice Best for Main trade-off
Glass pickle ornament Traditional-looking decoration and heirloom use. More fragile around young children and pets.
Plastic pickle ornament Families prioritizing durability and repeated play. Usually feels less like a fragile keepsake.
Wood or felt pickle Homes with small children or a handmade, craft-oriented theme. May look less like a conventional glass Christmas ornament.
Bright novelty design Young players or families wanting an easier search. Less difficult to conceal among the branches.
Ornament-and-game set Families wanting printed rules, a prize format, or a ready-made activity. Convenient but not historically required or evidence of an older tradition.

Old World Christmas describes its glass pickle as approximately 3.5 by 2 by 1.5 inches and explains the hiding-and-finding use on its product page. The company also says, in its own blog, “This tradition has made the pickle the top selling Christmas tree ornament every single year since Old World Christmas opened its doors nearly 40 years ago.” That is a company claim about its own sales, not an independently audited industry statistic.

Why is Berrien Springs associated with the Christmas pickle?

Berrien Springs, Michigan, is associated with the Christmas pickle because the village developed a pickle-related civic identity and festival culture around the custom. The Village of Berrien Springs’ municipal account says the community was named the “Christmas Pickle Capital of the World” in 1995.

The 1995 designation helps explain Berrien Springs’ role in publicizing and celebrating the story. The designation does not prove that Berrien Springs invented the Christmas pickle tradition, nor does it settle whether the custom began in Germany, the United States, or a German-American community.

What is the best historical conclusion?

The Christmas pickle tradition is best understood as a popular American Christmas custom with a disputed, probably invented German backstory. Imported German glass fruit-and-vegetable ornaments may have supplied the object, while American retailers and families supplied the story and the search game.

The evidence supports separating three different claims. First, families genuinely hide pickle ornaments and search for them. Second, families use several rewards, including presents, good luck, and gift-distribution duties. Third, the claim that the practice is an ancient or widespread German tradition is not established and is contradicted by evidence that many Germans do not recognize it.

The uncertainty does not make the custom meaningless. Christmas traditions often acquire their strongest significance inside families, where a repeated game can matter even when its public origin story is inaccurate. The Christmas pickle’s history is unsettled, but its modern purpose is clear: it turns tree decoration into a small holiday mystery.
