What does X define as adult content?
X defines Adult Content as consensually produced and distributed material depicting adult nudity or sexual behavior that is pornographic or intended to cause sexual arousal. X says the definition covers photographic, animated, and AI-generated material, including cartoons, hentai, and anime.
The important conditions are separate and cumulative: the people depicted must be adults, the material must be produced and distributed consensually, the post must carry the appropriate sensitive-content warning, and the content must not be placed in an area X prohibits. A post can fail the policy even when the material itself is sexual but consensual if the creator omits the warning or uses a restricted high-visibility placement.
What adult content is allowed, and what is prohibited?
The difference between permitted adult content and prohibited sexual material usually turns on consent, age, the nature of the conduct, labeling, placement, and whether the activity involves exploitation or solicitation.

X’s non-consensual-nudity policy prohibits explicit images or videos that were taken, appear to have been taken, or were shared without the consent of the people involved. X specifically includes intimate imagery created through face-swapping or other digital manipulation in its examples.
X’s US Take It Down Act guidance separately says that the prohibition covers real photographs and videos as well as synthetically generated content depicting an identifiable individual in an intimate or sexual context without that person’s consent. AI-generated pornography is therefore not automatically acceptable merely because it is synthetic: identifiable, non-consensual intimate imagery remains prohibited.
How do I label adult content on X?
Regular creators should adjust X’s media settings so images and videos are marked as sensitive and appear behind a content warning. X also allows a one-time warning to be applied to an individual post.

- Use X’s media settings to identify the account as one that regularly posts sensitive or adult material.
- Apply a sensitive-content warning to individual images or videos when posting them, including when the account setting does not already apply the warning.
- Check the published post from a viewer’s perspective to confirm that the media is behind a warning rather than displayed directly.
- Keep the warned media out of profile images, headers, List banners, Community cover photos, live video, and other prominent surfaces.
X says it may adjust an account’s settings when a creator repeatedly fails to mark adult posts. An unmarked post can therefore create an enforcement problem even when the underlying adult material would otherwise qualify for the consensual-content exception.
Can minors see adult content on X?
Users under 18 cannot click through to marked adult content on X, and viewers who do not include a birth date on their profile also cannot click through. X places age-restricted adult material behind a notice or interstitial rather than displaying it directly.

Can X creators monetize NSFW content?
Permission to post adult content does not mean that X will permit the content to earn money. X’s Content Monetization Policies classify adult and sexual content as a restricted category.
The monetization policy covers pornography, nudity, implied sexual acts, sex acts, sexual organs, sex toys, sexual bodily fluids, adult entertainment, sex-focused dating sites, adult sites and services, and sexually explicit accessories or clothing. X may limit amplification, suspend or revoke access to paid features, remove or require removal of content, or withdraw access to products that allow users to get paid by X.

These are different decisions. A creator should not describe X’s adult-content policy as a guarantee that pornography, NSFW posts, adult-site links, or related account activity will qualify for advertising, subscriptions, revenue sharing, or other paid products.

What happens if adult content is unmarked?
Unmarked adult content can trigger an account-setting adjustment or enforcement action, particularly when the creator repeatedly fails to apply the required warning. Content placed in a prohibited prominent location may be removed, and subsequent violations may lead to read-only restrictions or suspension.
Enforcement can also be more serious when the material is non-consensual, involves exploitation, depicts minors, includes violent sexual conduct, or falls under another prohibited safety rule. X’s 2025 Transparency Report describes non-consensual nudity as a serious privacy and safety violation and states that X has zero tolerance for child sexual exploitation.

Use this five-part check before uploading adult or sexual material to X:
- Consent: Confirm that every person depicted consented to both production and distribution. Do not upload leaked, hidden-camera, creepshot, upskirt, face-swapped, or otherwise manipulated intimate media without consent.
- Age: Confirm that everyone depicted is an adult. Do not publish anything involving child sexual exploitation.
- Content: Distinguish consensual adult nudity or sexual behavior from violent sexual conduct, bestiality, necrophilia, unwanted sexual content, graphic objectification, or sexual-service solicitation.
- Labeling: Apply the sensitive-content warning to the account’s media settings or to the individual post.
- Placement and purpose: Use an ordinary permitted posting context, not a profile picture, header, List banner, Community cover photo, or live video. Treat publishing and monetization as separate policy questions.
How do I report non-consensual intimate images on X?
Use X’s official reporting route for non-consensual intimate media and provide the relevant post or account details. X’s account-notices guidance and its intimate-media policy explain the platform’s reporting and enforcement framework; the US Take It Down Act guidance covers real and synthetically generated intimate imagery involving an identifiable person without consent.
Do not redistribute the offending image while trying to report it. Preserve the post URL and relevant account information, and use the official reporting process rather than amplifying the material.
Bottom line: X officially allows some adult content, but only when the content is consensual, involves adults, is properly labeled, and stays out of prohibited prominent locations. Non-consensual intimate media, exploitation, and several other sexual categories remain prohibited, while adult content that can be posted may still be restricted or ineligible for monetization.
