Cars 4 has not been officially announced by Pixar or Disney as of August 12, 2026. Pixar still lists Cars 3 (2017) as the latest theatrical movie, so Cars 4 is possible but unconfirmed: there is no verified release date, cast, plot, trailer, or production announcement.
Disney is still investing in the Cars franchise through Disney+, Disney Jr., merchandise, and theme-park attractions. Those developments keep a fourth film commercially plausible, but they do not prove that Pixar is making one.

Has Cars 4 been officially announced?
Cars 4 has not been officially announced by Pixar or Disney as of August 12, 2026. Pixar’s official feature-film catalog still identifies Cars 3, released in 2017, as the latest theatrical entry in the series. Disney’s current corporate announcements also identify other Pixar projects without presenting Cars 4 as a confirmed film.
That makes the most accurate answer to “Cars 4: Will It Happen?”: Cars 4 is possible, but it is not confirmed. No official source reviewed for this article provides a release date, director, writer, voice cast, story synopsis, trailer, production logo, or formal development announcement for a fourth theatrical movie.

What new Cars projects has Disney actually announced?
Disney’s confirmed Cars activity is currently concentrated in television, theme-park experiences, and merchandise rather than a publicly announced fourth theatrical film. Those projects keep the franchise active, but none of them is evidence that Pixar has approved Cars 4.
Cars: Lightning Racers
Cars: Lightning Racers is a genuine new Cars production, but it is a television series rather than Cars 4. Disney Television Animation, in association with Pixar, announced the series for Disney Jr. in 2025, with a planned 2027 debut followed by a move to Disney+. The premise returns Lightning McQueen and Mater to Radiator Springs and introduces new characters including Pipes and Miles. The announcement is documented in Disney’s Disney Jr. slate announcement.
Cars on the Road
Cars on the Road is the existing Disney+ continuation of the franchise. The series premiered in 2022 and follows Lightning McQueen and Mater during a cross-country trip. Disney+ lists the Pixar original with Owen Wilson and Larry the Cable Guy among its credited stars; that participation confirms their work on the television series, not casting commitments for an unannounced Cars 4 film. View the current listing for Cars on the Road on Disney+.
Magic Kingdom attractions
Disney has also announced two Cars attractions for the reimagined Frontierland at Magic Kingdom. The plans include an off-road rally attraction and a family-friendly attraction. The official Disney Experiences announcement shows continuing investment in Cars as a theme-park and consumer brand, but a park announcement cannot be treated as confirmation of a theatrical sequel.
Cars merchandise
Mattel’s official Cars line remains active with vehicles, multipacks, playsets, and character products. Current listings include 1:55-scale die-cast vehicles featuring Lightning McQueen, Mater, Sally, Sheriff, Sarge, and other characters. Readers looking for existing franchise products can browse Disney Pixar Cars die-cast cars, including a Radiator Springs three-vehicle pack. Merchandise supports the brand’s continuing commercial life, but buying or releasing Cars toys does not establish that Pixar has approved Cars 4.
Has Pixar hinted at another Cars project?
There has been a broad hint about more Cars development, but no confirmation of Cars 4. A 2023 report attributed comments to Cars creative director Jay Ward saying that “more Cars things” were brewing. The reported remark did not identify a fourth theatrical film, production stage, release window, director, writer, or cast. The available secondary reference is the Cars 3 entry summarizing the reported comments.
The wording matters. “More Cars things” could refer to television, shorts, games, merchandise storytelling, theme-park attractions, or another kind of franchise extension. Disney’s subsequent announcement of Cars: Lightning Racers demonstrates why a general development comment cannot safely be converted into a Cars 4 announcement.
Why do fans think Cars 4 could happen?
Cars 4 is commercially plausible because Disney continues to support a recognizable franchise across several markets. Cars reaches children and families, while its vehicles and racing themes also appeal to collectors and automotive enthusiasts. Disney previously described the property as having appeal that extended from children to collectors and automotive fans in its 2011 investor conference transcript.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe franchise has also shown that it can work in multiple formats: three theatrical films, the Cars Toons shorts, Cars on the Road, toys and collectibles, and planned park attractions. That flexibility gives Disney several ways to keep the world visible and profitable. It supports the conclusion that another feature is possible, not the stronger conclusion that another feature is already in production.
Why might Cars 4 not be coming soon?
Cars 4 may not be imminent because Pixar’s official feature-film materials and Disney’s announced near-term slate do not present it as a dated or formally introduced project. Disney and Pixar have instead announced or highlighted projects including Toy Story 5, Hoppers, Gatto, Coco 2, and Incredibles 3. Disney’s official materials about its current corporate and Pixar plans can be checked through the 2026 annual shareholders meeting announcement and the announcement of Coco 2 in development at Pixar.
The absence of Cars 4 from those announcements does not prove that the project has been canceled or will never exist. It does mean that the public record does not establish a development stage or schedule. Pixar feature films require years of creative development and production, so assigning Cars 4 a 2026, 2027, 2028, or 2029 release year would be speculation rather than studio scheduling information.
Could Lightning McQueen return in Cars 4?
Lightning McQueen could return in a future Cars movie, but Pixar has not announced a theatrical cast for Cars 4. Lightning and Mater remain central to both officially announced television projects: Cars on the Road follows the pair on their road trip, while Cars: Lightning Racers returns them to Radiator Springs.
Owen Wilson’s role in Cars on the Road and Larry the Cable Guy’s role in the same series should not be reported as confirmation that either performer has signed on for Cars 4. The same rule applies to other returning performers. Existing franchise participation is evidence that characters and actors remain active in Cars content, not an announcement of a nonexistent film cast.
What could the Cars 4 story be?
No official Cars 4 plot has been released. Fan discussions commonly imagine Lightning mentoring a new generation, Cruz Ramirez taking a larger role, an international racing storyline, or a prequel about Lightning’s early career. Those are possible creative directions, but none is a leak or confirmed story detail.
The only reliable current story information belongs to the announced television projects. Cars on the Road is a road-trip adventure involving Lightning and Mater. Cars: Lightning Racers brings Lightning and Mater back to Radiator Springs alongside new characters Pipes and Miles. Pixar and Disney have not said that either television premise will become the plot of Cars 4.
Will Cars 4 be announced for the franchise’s 20th anniversary?
The Cars franchise’s 20th anniversary in 2026 could provide a promotional opportunity, but it does not create a confirmed Cars 4 timetable. Disney’s continuing television, merchandise, and theme-park activity gives the company legitimate reasons to celebrate the brand. No verified announcement date has been published, however, and claims that a particular fan event will reveal Cars 4 should remain labeled as rumors until Pixar or Disney makes the announcement.

Fans can currently revisit Cars and watch Cars on the Road through Disney+, subject to regional catalog and pricing changes. The official Disney+ catalog lists both Cars and Cars on the Road. Cars: Lightning Racers is the next major announced screen project, with its Disney Jr. debut scheduled for 2027 and a later Disney+ release.
Collectors can also find current Mattel products such as Lightning McQueen, Mater, Radiator Springs multipacks, playsets, and other die-cast vehicles. These are existing Cars merchandise, not Cars 4 merchandise and not evidence that the film has been approved.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should fans evaluate Cars 4 rumors?
- Look for Pixar or Disney first. A listing on Pixar’s official film page or a formal Disney announcement carries more weight than a fan account, retailer listing, or unsourced social-media post.
- Separate the format. A Cars television series, short, game, attraction, or toy line is not automatically a fourth theatrical film.
- Require production details. A real film announcement normally identifies at least the project, studio involvement, and some combination of creative personnel, cast, story, or release information.
- Do not treat a year as proof. Claims that Cars 4 is arriving in 2026 or 2027 have no verified support in the official sources reviewed for this article.
- Check the date. Franchise news can become outdated, and an old comment about “more Cars things” does not prove that a later theatrical sequel was approved.
