Agatha All Along episode 5 ends by revealing that Teen is Billy Maximoff, Wanda Maximoff’s son and the MCU’s Wiccan. Blue magic, control over the witches, a Scarlet Witch-style crown, and Billie Eilish’s “You Should See Me in a Crown” confirm the reveal, while Billy’s reincarnation mechanics remain unexplained until episode 6.

The episode makes the reveal through images and emotion rather than a spoken superhero-name announcement. Teen’s power erupts after Agatha kills Alice, and the ending turns his grief and betrayal into the most dangerous force on the Road.

Key takeaways

  • Teen is Billy Maximoff, Wanda Maximoff and Vision’s son, and the episode visually reveals him as the MCU’s Wiccan.
  • Teen’s blue magic, glowing eyes, ability to control the witches, and Scarlet Witch-style crown identify him more clearly than dialogue does.
  • Alice Wu-Gulliver dies after Agatha absorbs her magic, which triggers Teen’s grief and turns him against Agatha.
  • Episode 5 confirms Nicholas Scratch is dead, so Nicholas is not secretly Teen and the séance cannot restore Agatha’s son.
  • Episode 5 does not explain how Billy came to inhabit William Kaplan’s body or exactly what happened to Agatha, Lilia, and Jennifer after the Road swallowed them.

What is the Agatha All Along episode 5 ending explained?

Agatha All Along episode 5 ends by revealing that Teen is Billy Maximoff, Wanda Maximoff’s son and the MCU version of Wiccan. Blue magic pours from Teen after Alice’s death, he appears to control the surviving witches, and a crown resembling Wanda’s Scarlet Witch crown forms on his head. The Billie Eilish song “You Should See Me in a Crown” makes the identity reveal unmistakable, although the episode never says “Wiccan” aloud before the credits.

This ending is both a character reveal and an emotional rupture. Teen does not simply discover that he has powers; Teen loses faith in Agatha after watching Agatha kill Alice, the witch who helped save her. His reaction unleashes a level of power that the coven—and possibly Teen himself—does not fully understand.

Spoiler warning: The explanation below covers the ending of season 1, episode 5, “Darkest Hour / Wake Thy Power,” and includes later-episode information where it clarifies Billy’s identity. Episode 6 spoilers are clearly labeled.

What happens in Agatha’s trial?

The fifth episode’s trial sends Agatha and the coven into an ’80s-style supernatural-horror scenario built around a Ouija-board séance. The apparent spirit is connected to Agatha’s mother, and the trial forces Agatha to confront the history she has tried to bury—especially the death of her son, Nicholas Scratch.

The coven’s stated purpose is to punish Agatha. Showrunner Jac Schaeffer explained that the door to the next stage of the Road opens only after Agatha kills one of her own coven members and faces the judgment of the surviving witches. The séance is not a way to bring Nicholas back: Schaeffer confirmed that Nicholas is dead.

Alice attempts to use her protection magic to free Agatha from the hostile spirit. Agatha responds by absorbing Alice’s power instead. The transfer kills Alice, making her the first major member of the coven to die directly because of Agatha’s actions.

Agatha’s choice matters because Alice has just helped protect her. Agatha does not kill Alice in a clean confrontation between enemies; Agatha takes Alice’s magic when Alice is trying to save her. That decision destroys Teen’s remaining belief that Agatha is a mentor or protector.

Why does Teen turn against Agatha?

Teen turns against Agatha because Agatha kills Alice after Alice has helped save her, not merely because Teen learns that he has supernatural abilities. Teen confronts Agatha and says that killing people for personal power is not what being a witch means to him. Agatha answers, “Are you sure?”

Agatha’s response is deliberately ambiguous. Schaeffer described the line as Agatha probing for darkness in Teen rather than confirming that Teen has already killed someone. The exchange raises a question about Teen’s past and motives, but episode 5 does not answer how long Billy has known who he is or why he joined the Witches’ Road.

Teen’s awakening therefore plays as an uncontrolled reaction to grief and betrayal. He sees Alice’s death, recognizes that Agatha feels little remorse, and loses control of the power inside him. The scene also leaves room for a more troubling possibility: Billy may have motives that neither Agatha nor the audience fully understands.

How does the ending reveal that Teen is Billy Maximoff?

The reveal unfolds through several connected visual and musical clues:

  1. Blue power radiates from Teen. After Alice dies and Agatha shows little remorse, blue energy begins to pour from Teen.
  2. Lilia and Jennifer turn on Agatha. The two witches’ eyes glow blue, suggesting that Teen is controlling them rather than simply inspiring them to attack Agatha.
  3. Teen throws Agatha into the Road. Teen sends Agatha into the Road’s mud, then sends Lilia and Jennifer after her.
  4. A crown appears. The final image shows Teen wearing a crown that resembles Wanda’s Scarlet Witch crown.
  5. The soundtrack identifies the transformation. Billie Eilish’s “You Should See Me in a Crown” plays over the ending, making the crown image a direct signpost.

The blue eyes and mind-control effect show that Teen is extraordinarily powerful. The crown connects him to Wanda. The music tells viewers to pay attention to the crown. Together, the clues identify Teen as Billy Maximoff even though the dialogue stops short of naming him Wiccan.

TVLine’s episode recap likewise identifies the crown, blue magic, and ending imagery as the long-awaited Teen reveal. Jac Schaeffer’s episode 5 interview with TheWrap provides the showrunner’s explanation of the trial, Teen’s ambiguous confrontation with Agatha, and the questions the episode intentionally leaves open.

What does the crown mean?

The crown means that Teen is connected to Wanda while also beginning to claim a magical identity of his own. Wanda wears a distinctive crown when she fully embraces the Scarlet Witch identity in WandaVision and later in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Teen’s version visually suggests inheritance, but the crown does not mean that Billy has become a second Scarlet Witch.

In Marvel Comics, Wiccan is a separate hero whose powers include spellcasting and reality manipulation. Marvel’s official Wiccan character guide identifies Wiccan as William “Billy” Kaplan, one of Wanda and Vision’s twin sons and a member of the Young Avengers mythology.

The television scene communicates three ideas at once: Teen is Wanda’s child, Teen possesses extraordinary magical potential, and Teen is beginning to define himself rather than merely imitate his mother. The visual language is intentionally suggestive because the series still needs to establish Billy’s personal history and motivations.

Is Nicholas Scratch secretly Teen?

No. Nicholas Scratch is dead, and episode 5 does not identify Nicholas as Teen. The séance connects Agatha to her deceased son, but the trial is not secretly transferring Nicholas into another body or bringing him back to life.

Teen’s ability to say Nicholas’s name is also significant. The sigil placed on Teen has concealed his identity from the witches, and the sigil prevents him from saying the name of the person he is connected to. Once Teen can say “Nicholas,” the scene gives Agatha another reason to suspect that Teen is not her son.

Did Agatha know Teen was Billy?

Episode 5 does not definitively explain when Agatha realizes that Teen is Billy. The sigil hides Teen’s identity from the witches, and Schaeffer declined to specify exactly when or how Agatha worked out who he was.

The strongest reading of the episode is that Agatha suspects Teen has a connection to either Nicholas or Wanda before the final reveal. His unusual magical ability, his apparent connection to Wanda, his age, and his inability to identify himself all make Billy a plausible answer. When Teen can say Nicholas’s name, Agatha can rule out one possibility.

That interpretation remains an inference rather than an explicitly confirmed episode 5 fact. The show deliberately postpones the full explanation of the sigil and Agatha’s knowledge.

What does episode 5 confirm, and what does it leave unanswered?

Question Episode 5’s answer Level of certainty
Who is Teen? Teen is Billy Maximoff, Wanda’s son; the ending visually presents him as Wiccan. Confirmed through the reveal and later explicitly identified
What are Teen’s powers? Teen can project powerful blue magic and appears able to control other witches. Shown directly in the ending
Is Alice dead? Yes. Agatha absorbs Alice’s magic, and Alice dies. Confirmed by the episode and Schaeffer’s explanation
Is Nicholas Scratch alive? No. Nicholas is dead and is not secretly Teen. Confirmed by the trial’s story
How did Billy survive Westview? Episode 5 does not explain it. Unanswered in episode 5
How did Billy become associated with William Kaplan? Episode 5 does not explain the body or soul-transfer mechanics. Unanswered until episode 6
What happened to Agatha, Lilia, and Jennifer? The Road swallows them, but episode 5 does not definitively establish that all three are dead. Unresolved at the end of episode 5

The witches appear to be swallowed by the Road rather than shown definitively dying. The distinction matters: the episode creates a cliffhanger, not a confirmed death list.

Later episodes explain Billy’s body and identity

Later-episode context: Episode 6, “Familiar by Thy Side,” supplies the major piece of backstory that episode 5 withholds. William Kaplan dies in a car accident shortly after his bar mitzvah, and Billy Maximoff’s soul comes to inhabit William’s body. Billy then continues living under a new physical identity.

Marvel’s official interview with Joe Locke describes the character as Billy/Wiccan and explains the connection between Billy Maximoff and William Kaplan. Episode 6 therefore confirms the reincarnation-style mechanics, but those mechanics should not be projected backward as information the audience had already received in episode 5.

How does the MCU version compare with the comics?

The MCU adaptation draws on the comic-book history without reproducing it exactly. In Marvel Comics, Billy Kaplan is the reincarnated form of Billy Maximoff and becomes Wiccan. Billy’s twin brother, Tommy, becomes Speed. The twins are the sons of Wanda and Vision and are associated with the Young Avengers.

Element Agatha All Along Marvel Comics
Billy’s identity Billy Maximoff becomes associated with William Kaplan’s body. Billy Kaplan is the reincarnated Billy Maximoff.
Hero name The episode strongly signals Wiccan but does not say the name in the final scene. Billy becomes Wiccan.
Family Billy is Wanda and Vision’s son; the series has not treated every comic detail identically. Billy and Tommy are Wanda and Vision’s twin sons.
Power presentation Blue energy, apparent control of witches, and a Wanda-like crown. Spellcasting and reality-altering abilities associated with Wiccan.

Marvel’s history of Wiccan and Speed provides the comic context for Billy and Tommy. Comic continuity helps explain the references in the show, but it is not a one-to-one prediction of the MCU plot.

Why the music makes the reveal unmistakable

The choice of Billie Eilish’s “You Should See Me in a Crown” turns the crown from a suggestive costume detail into an explicit signpost for the audience. The song arrives as Teen’s blue magic, glowing eyes, and crown complete the transformation.

The soundtrack cue is especially effective because the episode does not rely on a spoken “I am Wiccan” declaration. The image and music perform the naming function together. Fans who want the music from the first five episodes can find the relevant soundtrack release in Amazon Music’s catalog listing for Agatha All Along: Vol. 1 (Episodes 1–5); availability and format can vary by region.

What should viewers take from the ending?

The ending is not simply a twist about Teen’s parentage. The reveal reframes the entire relationship between Teen and Agatha. Teen arrived on the Road looking for help, but the trial ends with Teen becoming powerful enough to cast Agatha out. His first major display of power is tied to moral outrage and grief, not a triumphant superhero entrance.

The scene also separates Billy from Wanda. The crown invokes the Scarlet Witch, while the blue magic and Wiccan references point toward a different character with his own place in Marvel’s magical world. Billy may inherit Wanda’s potential, but the series has not yet established whether he will follow Wanda’s path, become a hero, or make choices that place him in conflict with the coven.

The official Disney+ listing identifies episode 5 as “Darkest Hour / Wake Thy Power,” an episode in which the coven flees under a blood moon toward another trial. The title’s second half is the clearest description of the ending: Teen’s power wakes, but the episode leaves the consequences—and the precise nature of his intentions—for what follows.

Where to watch and what to remember

Disney+’s official series listing identifies Agatha All Along as a 2024 fantasy production starring Kathryn Hahn, Joe Locke, Sasheer Zamata, Ali Ahn, Patti LuPone, and Aubrey Plaza. Episode 5 is the “Darkest Hour / Wake Thy Power” installment.

The simplest answer to the episode’s mystery is: Teen is Billy Maximoff, Wanda’s son, and the ending is his Wiccan reveal. Alice’s death triggers the confrontation, blue magic demonstrates Billy’s power, the crown connects him to Wanda, and the Billie Eilish needle drop confirms what the episode’s dialogue deliberately leaves unsaid.

For collectors: Marvel’s official merchandise guide includes licensed Wiccan and Agatha All Along products, including a Wiccan figure and soundtrack-related items. Product availability, sellers, prices, and formats can change, so check the current listing before buying.
