What Sora 2 was supposed to change
Earlier text-to-video systems could produce striking clips, but they often struggled with the basic logic of the physical world: weight, momentum, contact, balance, and cause and effect. OpenAI said Sora 2 improved those areas while also making generated video more controllable and realistic.
In its launch examples, OpenAI highlighted activities such as gymnastics, backflips on paddleboards, and figure skating. Those examples were intended to demonstrate better handling of buoyancy, rigid objects, rebounds, and complex body movement. The company also said the model could follow intricate multi-shot instructions while maintaining the state of the generated world from one shot to the next.

These were OpenAI’s reported capabilities, not the results of an independent benchmark or a guarantee that every generation would be physically correct. The model remained imperfect. The launch-era description of Sora 2 as “insanely realistic” is best understood as promotional or reception language rather than an independently measured conclusion.
Video with synchronized sound
Sora 2 was not limited to silent visual clips. OpenAI designed it to generate synchronized audio, including spoken dialogue, sound effects, and ambient soundscapes. In principle, that allowed a prompt to describe not just what a scene should look like, but also what viewers should hear as it unfolded.
The system card associated with Sora 2 described improvements in visual realism, physical behavior, audio synchronization, steerability, and stylistic range. That combination mattered because believable video depends on more than sharp images. A person’s movement, the timing of a sound, the reaction of an object, and the continuity between shots all contribute to whether a clip feels coherent.
It also created additional failure modes. A video could look convincing while containing incorrect physics, an implausible sequence of events, or dialogue and sound effects that appeared authentic but were entirely synthetic. More realism increased the need for viewers to question the origin and context of what they watched.
The Sora app was a social network as much as a video generator
OpenAI’s standalone Sora app was designed around more than entering a prompt and downloading a result. It combined generation with a customizable social feed, discovery, remixing, and sharing.
- Create: Users could describe a scene and generate a video.
- Remix: They could build on videos made by other users rather than starting from an empty prompt.
- Discover: The feed surfaced videos from people a user followed or interacted with, along with material intended to inspire new creations.
- Share: Generated clips could be posted into the app’s social environment.
OpenAI said the feed was intended to emphasize people and creative inspiration rather than optimize solely for time spent. Whether that design could produce a healthier creative community than conventional engagement-driven feeds was an open question. Remixing could encourage collaboration and participation, but it could also make it easy for misleading or objectionable ideas to spread from one generation to the next.

How the “characters” feature handled likenesses
One of Sora’s most notable features was called characters. It allowed users to bring themselves or other approved people into generated scenes. OpenAI described a one-time recording of video and audio that helped verify identity and capture a person’s likeness.

That approach recognized that a realistic face and voice are not just visual effects; they are personal identity data that can be misused.
Consent controls reduced some risks but did not eliminate them. A system that generates realistic people, voices, and situations can still contribute to impersonation, harassment, fraud, and misinformation. Controls can be bypassed, misunderstood, or applied after harmful material has already been copied elsewhere. OpenAI’s own safety documentation treated nonconsensual likeness use and misleading generations as continuing risks rather than solved problems.
Safety measures and restrictions
OpenAI described Sora 2 as using several layers of moderation. Safety systems examined prompts, generated video frames, audio transcripts, comments, and text describing a scene. This multi-stage approach was necessary because harmful content could enter at different points: in the request, in the generated visuals, in the soundtrack, or in the way a user presented the result to others.

Those measures reflected the unusual risk profile of a product combining realistic video, synchronized audio, and identity insertion. They should not be read as proof that Sora 2 was immune to deepfakes or that every harmful generation could be prevented. Moderation systems are imperfect, and synthetic media can be edited, reposted, or presented without the original platform’s context.

Why the iPhone app mattered

The Disney deal and the entertainment industry
Sora 2’s launch also had implications beyond individual creators. The Associated Press reported a three-year agreement involving Disney under which users could generate and share videos featuring more than 200 characters from Disney, Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars. The report also described a $1 billion Disney investment in OpenAI, planned use of OpenAI technology by Disney, and the possibility that some user-generated videos could become available on Disney+.
This was a significant historical signal because it suggested a possible path for generative video based on licensed entertainment properties rather than unauthorized imitation or fan-made use alone. It also raised difficult questions: Who owns a generated clip? How should character licenses apply to user remixes? What level of review is needed before synthetic videos appear on a mainstream streaming service? And how should audiences distinguish official material from user-created content?

At the same time, the safety documentation made clear that realistic audiovisual generation could amplify deepfake and misinformation risks.
